This mod is awesome. To be able to create a ship like in Archimedes ships mod, but be able to move around on it and use furnaces and stuff is amazing.
I have been wanting a mod like this for a while, although I would like it to have some more technologically advanced stuff like engines or ion thrusters (Space) and if it were compatible with a mod like the warp drive mod, allowing you to fly your ship around in space normally. Maby this could be an add-on or something. Just a thought, but it would be amazing.
There's no limit on ship size for technical reasons. The code can handle ships of any size. I've artificially set a block cap to help focus the beta test though. After the beta is complete, I expect Ships Mod will handle ships with tens of thousands of blocks. That's probably more than anyone will actually need for a while.
Dang it! Every time you increase the limit I think "Oh yeah, that's a ton of space." and then I make the hull too big and run out of room for the sails.

He's currently focusing on 17th century ships, I think.

I agree about different the ship names.
I would call the 20 block a "canoe".
(Maybe increase the block count to 50).
I would call the 200 block a "boat".
I would call the 400 block a "large boat".
(I would create a tiller block for the boats. It would be a one block entity but would draw a tiller 2 blocks outside it's collision mesh so it looks like a three block entity).
I would call the 1,000 block a "small ship".
I would call a 2,000 block a "ship".
I would call a 4,000 block a "large ship".
I would call a 8,000-10,000 block a "First rate ship".
Dang it! Every time you increase the limit I think "Oh yeah, that's a ton of space." and then I make the hull too big and run out of room for the sails.
I find that if I plan on half the blocks for the hull and the other half for masts and sails. Then I adjust to fit.
I like the ship your building. I liked the layout of the spars. I also started thinking '1000 blocks. I'll build cannons and everything'.
Truth is 1000 blocks is bearly enough for a well built single masted sloop rigged ship.
One trick I like to add some complxity to the sails with a low relitive block count. Furl the mainsails.
Often a ship could put up plenty of sails without unfurling the mainsails.(The bottom most set of square sails.)
The mainsails where left furlled for a couple of reasons.
First and most applicable to this mod, to see better. Steering from the stern and all.
Second, to save the canvas, mostly durring battle. I have heard of all sails except the mainsails set called battle reefed sails. (Reefed means furled).

That could be a major improvement if we could also have a sort of re-generating some chunks in a map, some proposals:
- Have deeper oceans (very useful for submarines)
- Re-generate ores in order to have larger veins of ores (would in this case suggest a sort of gold rush, uranium rush (for IC2)...)
==> villages and trade
- Be able to re-generate only a part of the map, so that towns and some monuments would not be crushed

Sorry for not posting last week, I was in vacations. (OMG, 190 Emails about forum posts...) Could you please help me for this reason? I don't know what changed in the latest version.
You can read the change log on PMC to see what's changed in the mod. Or you can read the blog.
HA ha ha, I've got a new question! These ships are really cool. Someday I should make a ship gallery on my website where people can post their ships and share them with other people. But for now, you can just keep posting the clipboard thingies on forums or wherever.

Thank you. Funny you should say that. I have a submarine/ironclad testbed.
She's called the Boyant, a 19 block diameter birch log sphere. She has a 4 levels below the water and 15 above.
She is 894 blocks including the helm and weights 451.5kg.
She has no decks or sails but 100 blocks are available for customization.
Try replaceing the wood with Iron/Stone one layer at a time from the top down. See how long it takes to sink her.
I intend to test different materials so I created this sphere as a testbed. I thought others could benifit from her.
I learned the weight of the vanilla blocks with the helm. Here is a list.
Helm 0.5kg/ea
Wool 0.2kg/ea.
Wood 0.5kg/ea.
Glass 0.6kg/ea.
Lightblock 0.6kg/ea.
Ice 0.8kg/ea.
Redstone lamp 2kg/ea.
Stone, all types 3kg/ea.
Iron, gold, diamond, emerald, redstone, and shipblock 4kg/ea.
Stone pressure plate 3kg/ea. (They look great as clad iron).
I really enjoy building ships for this mod. the physics make sence to me.
I still intend to build a twin canoe raft to test boyancy. I ran short with 200 blocks. Will try again with 400.

LoL i found away to make a iron clad type ship that has stone armor kinda derpy but is has stone armor!
You inspired me to try a steam powered ironclad warship.
I didn't look at any pictures but I did get to walk aboard the USS Cairo. A sternwheel ironclad warship commisioned in 1861.
I convinced the mod that smokestacks and the sternwheel are sails.
It looks good too.
I built the Wolf. (Wolf's 'Ship Clipboad' data posted below.) 5 guns under armor and twin boilers turning a bright stern wheel. Also a secondary helm/control block in the cabin below decks. Underwater view.

Hey, I'm thinking about something:
Supposing we built a submarine, we would sail across the Oceans and be the Greatest Master of the seas.
But, as soon as we want to modify it, or (in a long time, when (if) we'll have ship combat) somebody pierced the hull and we have to repair it.
Then, we would need a place where we would modify it (I don't know what's the name of this place). This place would be partially filled with water in order to have a better access with our submarine.
However, as soon as you want to modify your submarine (I mean, the hull), it will be really hard to get to it with all the water surrounding you.
Will there be a feature including some sort of sinks that remove water from an entire place (like the sponge in the alpha version), but could also replace the water blocks?
I think that would be really great (I know it is not really related to core features, but it is related to submarine engineering, isn't it?).

This is the final version of the Wolf.
An 1860's style ironclad.
Five guns, ironclad armor, twin boilers, and a stern paddle wheel.
1000 blocks.
She displaces 825.3kg.
She has 1860N of thrust. (I could add more sail, but I liked the number 1860 for an ironclad).
Her top speed is 2.9m/s.
She turns at 11.7deg/s.
The iron clading is stone brick, iron is way too heavy.
I used wool for the decks and in a few other places to save weight.
This one floats and looks much better.
The paddle wheel and the smoke stacks are made of wool and function as sails.
Don't miss the below decks control room/cabin.
This ship also has a control block availible on the outside. Incase the Captain falls overboard.

In your FAQ, you wrote that the largest ship can have 200 blocks.
It should be corrected.

You should do another tech demo video. And release the next version. And add waves & wind. And dynamically moving sails. And hyper realistic graphics that can somehow run on a potato. And true to life physics. And pirate coves. And pirate ships. And ship wrecks. And a cheque for a billion dollars. And code that materializes a super advanced oculus rift on your head. And a time machine. And the holy grail.

Would that be me? Dirt is not watertight.
I'm not aiming for any specific time period. I'm just trying to implement something simple that seems like it would fit in Minecraft's world.

This is my small tribute to a great artist.

A Rocket Science tester and engineer. Well, at least when it will be released. =)
I'm French so English is not my native language. Please correct me when I make a mistake and don't worry for me, it will be even better. Thanks in advance! =)

It should be corrected.

We'll cross that bridge when we get there.
Ever the watchful eye you have. It has been fixed. =)
Wow, you're totally right. I should be working on these things.
In other news, I actually will put out a release soon. It might not be what you're expecting though.
