I am sorry, but you introduced looooots of new features: you increased the block cap by at least 50 times!
So you don't have to worry about this. The beta is here to test the mod, and it seems like it works fine. Though, I guess you're planning to add some more features, and I'm sure that we will get to it really soon.

You shouldn't need a computing powerhouse to play Minecraft. It's designed to work on pretty low-end machines. If Ships Mod is causing significantly more lag than Minecraft normally does, I should try harder to optimize it. =P
It helps to know which parts of the mod are causing lag, but I can't except people who are not developers to be able to tell me that.
two things...
1. the lag from the galleon ship is caused by it moving at half speed+
2. the Alicorn might have to proceed being over the next 8k block limit, I started putting sails on her, and it went fron 7400 to 7800. and it is only one of thirteen sails. mabie when you get subs and aircraft working, mabie get the cap to 10k???

I can't imagine what in the code could cause that. The actual speed of the ship doesn't affect much... except maybe the water displacement system. I can look into optimizing that.
part of the newly available blocks might get used to build bigger hulls to offset the "ridiculously heavy weight values" by some mod blocks (material= stone for mod blocks) and raise the ship.
which will bring the need for bigger sails on bigger masts - pushing the hull down again and nullyfying the newly available blocks.
a solution might be a config file of customizeable weight table of some sort.

stop going bonkers about your alicorn and dont forget there is no damage model yet or never might be.

excuse me, but I have tried it with ships bigger than 1050k. and when I found out the Alicorn was 7400 blocks, it was without sails. and now I started to add sails and realized it took more than 8000. im just going to finish the ship and see the official total.

mabie that's the problem, it lags by launching, and get even more laggy when I reach full speed, and it goes really fast due to 6 giant sails.
what i am saying, proposing is to build smaller. 1050k? or 1050 blocks?
build smaller and learn the quirks and peculiarities of ships mod, instead of waiting and asking tiome and again "does it work now?"
anyway, none my godforsaken my business is it.
my ships are under 1,050 blocks. after that it lags, and im just waiting for the mod to allow my laptop to get bigger ships.... I use the mod but I cant use all of it features without serious lag. that's all I am having to say. don't say im not interested and not using it.

I am happy to report that I found out why the ships were lagging so much for me, I forgot to uninstall the previous version, and mixing the previous version and the latest version made it lag.... I know because my ship that I launched had 1600 blocks, more than the galleon..... but also it does lag when I turn it and I had a bug to report. once I took off the 0.7 verson I launched the ship and it spawned a ghost ship thing, half of it was gone, the entyti phased through it and when I right clicked the blocks it deleted itself

How did you determine the block count for the Alicorn?
If it was a 'Cuchaz's ship block', It is likely more than 8000 blocks.
The ship blocks will not display a number more than twice as much as their block cap.
So a ship with 7900 blocks and one made of 11900 blocks would both be displayed as 7900 blocks by the gigantic ships block.

Improved sail/trust physics and configurable properties will be a grand improvement.
Not to mention the 8K+ max...
Soon this mod will be in every modpack in every let's play vidio that is worth watching.
Once M3L and Tall Worlds and air ships/submarines These mods may well take over MineCraft...
Or at least Dominate the world generation/exploration.
