This is a fun little mod I put together for a server awhile ago. Craft playing cards in five different suits (diamond, heart, club, spade, joker) for different effects, but beware: they may backfire when used, turning the effect against you!
Cards are made from paper and red or black dye. They don't do anything yet; craft them together with bone meal for "Loaded" cards with a 40% chance of backfire and ender pearls for the better "Hoyle's" cards with only a 10% chance of backfire. Each suit has a unique effect when used, as well as a unique punishment when the magic fails and backfires on you.
THE CARDS
DIAMOND
Right click to throw the card. Causes a explosion on impact (not damaging blocks). If it backfires, it will explode in your hands!
HEART
Right clicking will heal you four hearts. Backfires, however, will poison you for a few seconds.
No picture because there's really nothing to show.
CLUB
Throw this card and hostile mobs will spawn where it hits. Good for ambushing other players. Be careful of backfires, as they will spawn the monsters next to you. The card will spawn either two zombies, two spiders, a skeleton, or a cave spider. All have an equal chance to be spawned.
SPADE
For the sneaky ones. Gives you night vision, speed, and invisibility for 20 seconds. Enough time to sneak into your friend's base or make an escape from attackers. Backfires will give you blindness and slowness for 10 seconds.

JOKER
The fun one. A thrown card that hits another living thing will cause you to swap places with it. Use your mind, as this can be applied in all sorts of creative ways. Jump off a cliff then throw it at someone, dooming them to fall, or just use it to reach difficult places, etc. If it backfires, it will teleport you to a random location within 50 blocks.

Place five cards of the same suit in the crafting bench (in different slots) with a bone meal for five loaded cards of that suit. This is a shapeless recipe.
Hoyle's Cards
Place five cards of the same suit in the crafting bench (in different slots) with an ender pearl for five Hoyle's cards of that suit.. This is a shapeless recipe.

Thanks! I've noticed the lack of particles when throwing cards in a couple other videos. Did you have all particles on in settings? That's the most obvious problem I can think of; you won't see the cards if you have particles on minimal or off. If you had the setting right, I'll have to check it out some more and see if I can fix the issue.
have you considered doing tarot cards it be a good way to expand the mod
you could have them be random drops from witches and in chests

V the Hierophant - 10 absorption hearts for 10 mins
VI the Lovers - heal and regen for 2 mins
VII the Chariot - Speed 3 for 3 mins
VIII the Strength - Strength 5 for 5 mins
IX the Hermit - knockback all surrounding mobs
X the Wheel of Fortune - will spawn anything from items to the wither, won't spawn the ender dragon because it destroys the world
XI the Justice - revives you at half health if you die, however killing another player while ones in your inventory will lower your health 50%
XII the Hanged man - teleports you straight up 30 blocks
XIII the Death - used like a melee weapon for an instant kill, 50% remaining if used on the ender dragon
XIV the Temperance - 10 uses takes 1-3 hearts gives treasure
XV the Devil - summons the wither
XVI the Tower - jump boost 5
XVII the Star - will give you a nether star in the form of a meteor that aimed right for you
XVIII the Moon - sets time to night
XIX the Sun - sets time to day
XX the Judgement - lighting strikes all surrounding mobs
XXI the World - up to you
these are just ideas of what they could do the effects are really up to you
That sounds quite interesting. I may some day do a huge expansion of this mod, adding tons of new cards and effects, but I'm currently working on my flintlocks mod as well as some non-minecraft projects. If I did, I'd probably use playing cards, expanding it to specific numbers (8 of hearts, king of clubs). I like a lot of the effects you mentioned, however.
Additionally, perhaps tarot cards could be a sort of super weapons that are hard to get but have powerful effects, and don't fail.
Those cards need a more themed crafting recipe. How about adding gunpowder to diamonds, glistering melon to hearts, eggs to clubs, water bottles to spades, and an ender pearl to joker? Also i think you should be able to add ingredients that do stuff like make the cards backfire less, or be more effective.

Unfortunately, there is no Forge version for 1.7, which this mod requires. Once it is released, though, I will update the mod to work with it.
