This was my entry for ModJam. This mod is all about these crystals right here (Colors WILL vary):
What do these crystals do? Well you may have noticed the glass. One of those crystals smelted the sand below it. See the dark cobblestone? One of the crystal's turned stone into that which can cause mobs to spawn. See the diamond? One of those crystals can make ores regen within a certain radius. Those are just a few of the abilities these crystals have.
Now, how does one get these crystals. They generate in the world, but mining them with a diamond pick only gives you shards. You'll need a crystal smeltery to make your own (Don't worry, there are helpful books to tell you how they work =P).
Just what abilities you get for your crystals is up to you to discover for yourself.
You, dear sir are a genious. GENIOUS! This mod is quite fun and devious. But, may I make a suggestion? The ability to make Crystals out of certain ores, like Quartz, Diamonds, Lapiz Lazuli, or even Ender Pearls?
Sounds pretty cool. Personally, I'd like to watch a video showing me more of this before I decide to download- it's more trouble to just download it, clear out my Minecraft and throw back in the mods I need like Minimap, and then figure it all out myself. Nah, much easier to just watch someone else who did all that for me.
But besides that this looks like... ...a gem of a mod.

This actually looks really cool. Definitely trying this out at some point. Does the ore regenerating crystal have a configurable ID list for inter-mod compatibility? Also, what's your stance on public modpacks?

Yeah, I currently have the lag issue fixed in my development build, and I still wonder why I didn't experience it during ModJam, but I now fixed it by now making the crystals do their ability every 600 ticks (30 seconds, and yes, it will be configurable, but it's recommended you keep it by default to stop your TPS to drop)

I have no idea, but it was driving me batty. I was trying to do stuff, do some world-gen, heck, just travel across water and had weird, crazy lag and refusal to load properly, so I eventually gave up and switched my normal Mapwriter out for Opis so I could track it down. The Crystals were each using hundreds to thousands of milliseconds of time. Frankly, I'll take anything, anything that fixes the lag problem. Given what you've said that they do so far, working every 30 seconds or so is just fine as far as I'm concerned. I really do love how this looks and can't wait until you've got everything up and working right.

Quite a lot actually.
You get them when you craft certain blocks (they're vanilla books). Craft the Crystal Smelter and Crystalizer.
