How do I show the latest version of a mod regardless of alpha/beta/release tag?
The widget uses curse.com to source project information, not curseforge.com. At present curse.com only shows files marked as releases (and beta), so Alpha files won't be something the widget knows about. This is a problem that is on my list to be investigated, my primary concern is that the widget was intended to be for consumers and curse.com is for consumers, I don't know if the curseforge team want non-technical people encouraged to visit curseforge.com (instead of curse.com), especially because curse.com is the only place advertisements are served with downloads which is what funds the author rewards. That said it's on my list to discuss with the curseforge team as soon as possible and if they give the go ahead I will update the widget
You can see a list of files available on Tinkers Construct here. The widget supports modifiers (eg: latest, beta, release, 1.7.10) but they're restricted to the curse.com files:
[mod="latest"]tinkers-construct[/mod]
[mod="1.6.4"]tinkers-construct[/mod]
Let me know if that answers your question, or if you have any suggestions!

For mod devs:
At this time mark your dev jar files as "Alpha" releases to get around the issue of dev jars being pulled up by the widget. It is usually a case of load order (upload the dev jar first, then your coremod/mod file,) but to be sure this option just removes it from being parsed all together. Other devs will still be able to get the jar from CF, but it wont show up to the regular consumer on Curse.com.
We are looking at a way to fix this issue on the CF end.
That's correct, alpha releases aren't listed as files on curse.com. The files are taken from curse.com, not curseforge. You'll need to have your files as at least beta.
How is it that some mods are able to have a different display name vs. link?
Example: 'Mine & Blade: Battlegear 2' as the title, but 'mb-battlegear-2' as the link, whereas my mod has an atrociously ugly link that looks like it will probably change if I update my title.
I'll add this to my mod post, many thanks for this tool.

The CurseForge URLs differ from curse.com URLs and curse.com is what the widget uses. You can find the curse.com URL for your project on CurseForge by clicking the "View on curse.com" link. Following that link you'll end up here: http://mods.curse.com/mc-mods/minecraft/244251-eat-the-eggs so you take the final part which is 244251-eat-the-eggs and then use that, like so:
Am I missing out or "doing it wrong" by having my mod in CurseForge vs curse.com? I don't want to be a noob!
Either way your fix worked so THANK YOU!
No, CurseForge and Curse.com are the same database, just different websites. That can be a bit confusing at first, essentially CurseForge is the place for mod creators to go and upload and manage their mods, and curse.com is where consumers can go to download mods The widget only pulls data from curse.com (so you must provide the curse.com project ID) but you can use curse.com or curseforge.com interchangeably any other time I hope that helps explain.
