EDIT: The same counts for players who use X-Ray to find specific ores underground faster. They should not kid themselves that they are "playing fair" and might as well cheat the blocks in.
I will not kid myself, I do use the mod as a cheat, but ONLY in my single player worlds, however, I am very directionally challenged and get lost in caves no matter how I put the torches, so I use this mod as a navigation more than a find this ore...
XRay58.jar for MC 1.12.2 working well in 6 very simple steps (tried with success on the DireWolf20 1.12 pack) :
1) download the original XRay-58.jar for 1.12.1 (from the first page of this thread)
2) extract the file XRay1121.class from this jar (with 7-Zip)
3) rename it to XRay1122.class
4) open the XRay1122.class with a hex Editor, find the string XRay1121 and change it to XRay1122 , then save it
5) add the XRay1122.class in the XRay-58.jar
6) put the jar in the mods folder
That's it !
This works perfectly! Thanks. I had to update my 7-Zip. I used notepad++ with the hex editor plugin and it was really easy. Thanks again!

Is there any way to install this onto a Vanilla 1.12.2? Because a lot of people, myself included, do not like to use mod managers like forge and one of this mods biggest appeals is that such programs aren't required. I did all the steps, but when I try to run the jar file to install it, it only displays up to 1.12.1

I've tried this twice, once with winrar, and once with 7-zip, and no luck. The hex program I'm using is HxD.

with 7-zip, I used, you right-click goto 7-zip, goto open archive, scroll down the list and find the 1211 class file, drag it to the desktop, edit it to say 1122 then open with a hex editor (I used XVI32) do a search for 1121 then change the peram to 1122 the hex code will change from 62 to 63 I believe... Save then in the archive opener drag that new file to the archive and accept any pop-up... you do NOT need to delete the 1211 file as that was going to be my question but I didn't delete mine and it works...

I had done all that
But as it turns out, I just needed to download a fresh copy, and it works great so far.

I tried this too with 7-zip and HxD. Xray did show up, but pressing X just made my light flicker for a short flash, and the block list wasn't filled with options. So it still didn't work. Am I missing a step?

Try downloading a fresh copy from this site. That's what eventually made it work for me.
How about somebody who has the recommended changes implemented upload a working copy for those of us who are not so comfortable using hex editors? People helping people is a very good and cool thing.
He said without forge... I'm not able to remember how to install without a mod loader... So, sorry... If you have a folder that says mods, open it and create a new folder called 1.12.2 and put it in there...

Hey, AmbientOcclusion.
Tried 58 on 1.12.2, seems to want to work but it wont detect the blocks and therefore doesn't list any in the GUI. Just helping you out...

There's a mod specifically made for this, it is called GammaBright <=Linked
We do live in the age of laziness, LMAO
There is actually one that works fine (with a little glitching) but is stable. uyjulian's X-Ray Mod
But, but, but we live in the lazy time on Earth, there has to be a mod that I can use to make me lazier! lol. There is, I posted it above...
Read above, I posted one that currently works, however the GUI is really cumbersome but at least doesn't open in another window.

Did you try unchecking the other nether items first? Such netherack, nether brick, etc.?
What program to I have to study to be able to modify mine craft to at least get better light in caves and in the nether for 1.12.2
