Put the iron bars right on top of the piston. Alternatively, just make a 2x2 ring on top of your anvil and the other components. Had this problem, it was a little hard to make out where the bars were intended to go.
Yeah, it's on the grid instead of the lines. But they're in a 2x2 area with bars over the piston. Everything should be shifted a half-grid down and to the right.
Empty space designators or even just a description 'put iron bars over the piston' would clear it up a bit but it doesn't actually LOOK for empty space, last I checked, it's only looking for the exact items.
Also the golem press is just absurdly cool compared to the old way of doing it. Kinda wish the press had an inventory of some sort so we could stack materials in it. Make a bunch of gears and the like and just store them in the press.

Are the part descriptions in the Mystical Construct clipping off the screen for you guys? I'm on large scale GUI on full screen, and I can't read the last few words of every line on the parts on the right.

I personally also have Botania and Blood Magic, but if you want a true list of 1.8.9 mods, check here. You won't find many more substantial mods if you have quality standards or prefer magic mods however. I only run 22 mods at the moment because Tinker's Construct hasn't updated with a smeltery and serious rebalancing of materials.

What forge version should I be using? Tried using the latest, but that produced an error stating I wasn't using 1.8.9.
I used 1690 for my forge version, but I'm pretty sure this is outdated, as I got this back when Botania updated.
Where is this version available at? The latest version I can find is 1577.
Yeah, you're definitely using forge 1.8. This is where you want to go. When you're on the forge site, mouseover on 1.8 to get to the 1.8.9 jars.

I think my Thaumcraft is broken...
This isn't an issue with Thaumcraft; simply terrain generation. It happens all the time.

I personally also have Botania and Blood Magic, but if you want a true list of 1.8.9 mods, check here. You won't find many more substantial mods if you have quality standards or prefer magic mods however. I only run 22 mods at the moment because Tinker's Construct hasn't updated with a smeltery and serious rebalancing of materials.
In 5.1 bad lags with lines like "AURAS TAKING 238 ms LONGER THAN NORMAL" in logs, especially after nether portal travel to either side.
Also, momentary lag after each planting grass seeds.
EDIT: Fixed by changing Java to 64 bit and adding memory in launch settings.
