I dont really see where your coming from here, it seems like the vice for me, tc4 was scanning literally everything for aspects, and then filling a deconstruction table with crafting tables. whereas tc5 and the specific amount of points per each research, would require a little bit more thinking because your working with a limited resource, and the actual ability to fail researches and retry given you dont have knowledge fragments other then the aspect amount, research is still the same as prior

Is research broken right now? I'm playing with thaumcraft in the "unstable" modpack and I can't gain anymore research points. The thaumometer just keeps saying "nothing new can be learned from this" even on unique items I scan. Even when it was working (does it only discover unknown aspects now?), I don't think it was giving me any research points. I'm completely stuck now on my first research note lol.
EDIT: WOW WTF that's misleading. The research table changed so much in functionality and yet looks EXACTLY the same. I wish that new system was explained a little more explicitly, I had to watch a let's play to figure out what was going on...
In Thaumcraft 5 you can easily screw other players by not even trying. And I'm not even talking Taint. It takes a knowledge and effort not to drain Nether or End out of Aura, or it will shut down Shielding and Harness for everyone.
Just FYI, this is a big bug I discovered just a short while ago - apparently all vis recharge (including flux) was happening in the overworld, no matter which world it was actually happening in. This explains a lot of odd things people have been reporting with the aura.
Anyone else finds harvest seals/contraptions realy bugged? In theory, as long as the crop blocks are inside the area that the harvest seal covers, golems allowed to do the task should break any fully grown plants. Very often golems (or basicly seals since they sense work and then create a task for the golems) take ages to see a mature crop rooted next to them.
When a collect seal covers the same area, golems should pick up any items, and if specified on the harvest seal use them to replant crops on farmland. Yet so often, farms have many empty spots on them that golems only every so often see as a task.
TC4 harvest machenics were allot smoother.
How big an area have you defined? To be kind to servers the harvest seal only checks a single block every 5 ticks which means if you marked a very large area it will take a while to register.
EDIT: Also for those saying they preferred the way golems in TC4 replanted crops - so you preferred farms becoming empty if not enough seeds are dropped or if the chunk unloads at just the right time? Or that you cant plant crops close to each other without the entire field eventually becoming a single crop type?

Well it mostly explains the flux when using eldritch portals(Or whatever they are called, didn't get to use them :c ).
So this was also a problem with Nether and end? Does it then explain why the flux we produced in the nether seemed to have no effect?
Wait, so there's an addon that automatically unlocks all of the research? Seems really redundant seeing as there's already a cheat thaumnomicon.
SpitefulFox (Forbidden Magic, Avaritia) made a joke mod called "Thaumcraft Minus Thaumcraft". Removes Warp, unlocks every research, and pre-scans EVERY SINGLE ITEM for you. Unfortunately, Resonant Rise 3 seems to have added this mod and enabled it by default, ruining the experience of Thaumcraft. No idea why they thought that was a good idea. But then, their judgement has been rather questionable in the past....
Why anyone is using it, I don't know. Especially considering that nearly the same result can be accomplished with three commands. Except having everything scanned, but that just floods the Aspect pages anyway.

Wtf is this ridiculously complicated research system. I just got home from school and wtf as if I wanted to study in Minecraft too.
Why do I need to write an essay to throw some alumentums. Also only 4 new swords? Why do I even bother with this mod?

If someone has that response, then they can turn on easy mode and deal with the aspect cost. If that isn't enough, then the mod is not for them, it seems. Research is an integral part of Thaumcraft.

There is thinking in TC5 research, but barely above "put triangle peg in triangle hole" level. Puzzles are too simple, probably to be solvable by anyone. And if you still manage to draw yourself in corner, price of mistake is just one paper and a small portion of ink sack.
In TC4 mistakes were costly, so you had to think ahead. Decon tables were devaluing it,
of cause. There is a space for improvement. Here is what I'd change:
Remove decon table.
Streamline scanning. Make upgraded scanner that autoscan everything that goes through your inventory and can be used to scan everything in
container or all blocks in some radius with one click.
Make research reversible and re-doable. Meaning, if you spent too much on earlier research, you can redo it trying to get less/different aspect cost. It would require some small changes in research process, such as no-fail undoable aspect placing and combining.
So, you have a pool of Aspect points that you have to budget all knowledge on. You have actually to craft and scan things you get knowledge of to recoup (with interest) aspect knowledge points you have spend on researching them.
Now, TC5 research model can be made interesting too, if puzzles were more challenging
Make available aspect points more variable (not just base aspects) and semi-random. So, you can't mental autopilot through them using same limited number of tricks.
Give an option of doing specific research with reduced number of points to get a reward of cheaper/more stable recipe.
If someone has that response, then they can turn on easy mode and deal with the aspect cost. If that isn't enough, then the mod is not for them, it seems. Research is an integral part of Thaumcraft.
Too much hassle. Just install a mod that does it for you.
This is exactly the problem. It should not be "dumbed down" for people that don't want to do the work.
You forget Minecraft is a kids game. And kids want flashy mods that make them feel cool without really doing anything.
This leads to the production of countless unbalanced mods that make balanced mods obsolete. Ever played DNS techpack? Yeah, screw that thing, the pack is for 8 year olds.
Still waiting for the recipe 1Sponge+1Tainted goo to make the Taint Sponge... oh wait, Sponges are way too hard to get.

But I agree that TC5 research is just too easy right now. But oh well, looks like it's gonna get reworked once more.

Minecraft isn't necessarily a kids game, it's just that a lot of little kids (who most of just watch minecraft videos on youtube all day) play minecraft.

I play only with the top notch mods only, which instantly excludes orespawn and lucky blocks.

I must say the mix of sarcasm and meant words was a bit unhealthly in my post, but the sentence you were referring to was sarcastic.
That just reminded me of that silly petition on Change.org to not let adults play Minecraft.
I really find overly empowering mods problematic, because when you have one mod with the concept of "power at a price" and then just a mod that lets you do stuff, then paying the price for power just makes you feel stupid. There afew very few mods which I fully tolerate.
Then they rearrange and associate collected memories, forging them into complex shapes, which then can be used as catalysts in Thaumatic processes. In other words, they construct specific shapes in their minds from their memories, which can connect to and affect shapes outside of it.

Uh memories are still memories, you cannot extract and reshape them, otherwise you could do the same with warp.
I admit a mod like thaumcraft minus thaumcraft seems very legitament to someone like me who tends to make new worlds regularly for varies reasons and has done EVERY single research at least 10 times and around 50 times for the basic stuff.
also if where suggeting research mechanics then how about...
Suggestion: maybe research could get easier the more you do. the idea is that you could say pick up your brandnew thauminomicom and get the research for say thaumium fortress armor without any other research but it could be to difficult to complete because you lack the prerequisit knowledge. for example you would start with three of every primal then every research grants you more starting aspects.
and before ya start whingin remember in MY opinion "logic > balance = fun"

It makes it unique and interesting to come with theories about. I have covered (one of possible explanation of) it in my "Theory of Everything":
