This is my question too. Could this feature be added?
The better bows mod has quivers that work like the backpacks you offer in the basic sense. You keep quivers in the inventory and right click on them while in your hands to access their sub-inventory. When carrying any of the quivers in the inventory, the Render player API mod draws the quiver on your back, or your waist depending on how you set it. It doesn't matter how many you are carrying. . . and none of them need an armor slot to use. That's just silly overbalancing (and a deal breaker) if you ask me.
I've made an add-on that allows you to see the first backpack in your hotbar being worn on the players back.
You can also see backpacks worn by other players, so long as the add-on is either installed on the server or installed on the other player's client.
I had to make some changes to Backpacks to allow you to see backpacks worn by other players, so you'll need to download version 2.1 of Backpacks for the add-on to work.
The add-on doesn't use or require the Render Player API, but it seems to be compatible with other mods that do use it, so you can see backpacks and quivers at the same time.
Version 2.1.1 (just released) adds backpack pouches, which can be used to increase the size of your backpacks.
At the moment I don't intend to add any automatic item manipulation to my backpacks so I probably won't add a refill or item collection mode.
I'm back from my hibernation. Most likely gone so don't pm me.
This update is not backwards compatible, so any items made with a previous version will be lost.
You can get them here

Backpacks 1.7.2
1.7.2 was a big update, so if you find any bugs please let me know.
I'm hoping to try out Balanced Exchange next time the server I play on adds new mods, and I'm totally psyched to see what it can do. Thanks again for all the time and effort in keeping up with MC/Forge, and I hope we'll keep seeing updates from you in the future!
So happy I read this.....I downloaded the update for the M-Ore mod and it caused conflicts with your stuff. Now I know what I need to fix in the interim.
But I have one request: make expensive upgrade making backpacks grader than 3*9. May be upgrade items must fill all line in backpack. so to make 4*9 player must fill last column with upgrade items. or 3*10 fill last row with 9 upgrade items.
If you are using the 1.7.2 version you can allow backpack to be further upgraded by editing 'minecraft/config/backpacks16840.cfg' in a text editor and adding additional lines to the backpack_heights and backpack_widths lists.
For example
I:backpack_heights <
3
3
3
4
>
I:backpack_widths <
3
6
9
9
>
would allow you to upgrade 3x9 backpacks to 4x9
*sadly*, but it's great!!! Or can U add it in 1.6.4?
Keep up the good work!
Sorry I can't give out link haven't gained permissions for all the mods used.
Sure
Thanks will put a link to this post on my permissions/licensing
I have been searching for a 1.7.2 backpack mod for a while now and just found yours.
It seems to work great so far. Only tested a single backpack (made it bigger twice now with pouches. I also colored it.)
One bug I have noticed - chests that are opened with a backpack selected in your hand tend to stay open after you close them. They still have their lids open when you hit escape to close them.
To reproduce:
Have backpack selected in your hand.
Open chest
close chest with escape
notice chest lid is still in the open state.
The chest UI closes, just its lid stays open. Does not affect ability to reopen chest.
Yeah, that's been a problem for a while now, but I've finally managed to fix it in version 2.3 (not ready for release yet).
One last comment - not sure if there is anything that can be done about it or not. It seems unintuitive to have to have the backpack in your hand to open it. Since nested backpacks can be opened with a right click, it may feel more natural to be able to right click backpacks in your inventory and have them open - without having to have it selected in your hand.
Again, I don't know if this is a design thing or possibly it's difficult technically.
Really great mod. This mod has been the #1 mod I've been searching for to use with my 1.7.2 game.
Cheers.
