Probably all of the fluff the FTB packs put in. I really ought to prune this thing down, but I love having 5 million things to do.
If you felt strongly about it though you could just have a chance for absorption of the neutron by the deflector.
(n) (physics) the process in which incident radiated energy is retained without reflection or transmission on passing through a medium
I have 147 mods...
I tried that. Any reflectivity high enough to serve the intended purpose also allowed for one core to be its own reactor, sometimes with multiple layers of reflectors.
EDIT:
No, I tried pass-through. I will try absorption.
World gen perhaps? Are you using default? I've got mine set on Highlands. Currently got a Boring Machine with a maxed out creative industrial coil up at y 256 generating far ahead, and my god the hangups are disgustingly long. I actually sat for 3 minutes waiting for a teleport over to where my current boring machine had reached so I could see if the maxed out one had finally made it that far. Maybe I'll create a world on default gen and see what performance I get.
Really the only bad thing about large ftb packs is that minecraft itself takes longer to load up. Once it loads yeah, 'heavier' packs will take more ram (lite for instance only takes about 700mb) to about the 1.1-1.8gb range.
I would try either allocating more memory to ftb or just try to take out any mods notorious for causing lag/fps drops.
Hardly ever go above 45% used memory, allocating 3 gigs right now.
Also, it's starting to look like world gen type is an issue. I could either cut out around my base in my current world and paste it into a new one with default gen, or just start over. Preferably the former however.
One age is a rainbow forest, another is a blend of Extreme Hills, Highland, Highlands, Crag, Sublime Shrubland (which does cause lag, but from 40000 f-ing pixies) and swamp.
Yeah it should be fine, from my experience Reika's mods tend to play nice when choosing biome ids. Worst that could happen is needing to change the biome id of one biome in the config. You may want to switch on alternate coloring too, make it easier to spot with 80+ other biomes around it.
I've had no trouble getting any biomes from Reika's mods to load with bop, highlands, or atg. Dude is a solid programmer like that.

That's very interesting. This will probably make Fermenters require more care with placement; does it simply work based on biome and elevation, or would putting it inside a building help regulate temperatures?
Shielding it from the sky counts as "indoors", so time of day no longer applies; I designed the engine with the assumption that MC houses would not have passable thermal insulation and as such biome and depth modifiers still apply.
Not that we NEED more machines in RC, but this seems like an oppurtunity for a new one. Something to turn melted stone into stone wool, to use as insulation for our houses. I'd build three layer thick walls if it meant using my fermenter easily in a remote mountaintop fortress of solitude type thing. The wiki article I read indicated it's made with a machine not unlike a cotton candy spinner these days, so a good candidate for rotary power maybe?
Of course, coding your engine to be able to determine whether or not a structure is insulated fully.. I'm not much of a programmer, but that sounds like a huge... female dog. So yeah, no pressure haha
For the Now:
Doesn't seem terribly necessary, really, since the greatest variation in temperature would be from the day-night cycle and, if insulated from that then you have a more-or-less stable temperature constantly (since biomes are more or less fixed and depth of placement is an easily controlled variable).
My question, though, is: Are deeper depths warmer? And if so, what kind of an increase per meter down are we talking?
Yes, the temperature rises with depth more than about 20m below the surface, by about 1.2 degrees a meter.
There was an absurd amount of block updates going, I was in my workshop. I generally top 3.5 gigs of memory standing in my workshop and my FPS will drop under 40 hehe. (I have a good computer)
To give you an idea of what was going on; because of all the lag I am getting I decided to rip the base apart and rebuild it. I am pretty sure Ender IO (a brilliant mod btw) is the cause of my lag. Forget about the machines for a moment. I have torn up about 3/4 of my workshop/base area so far and have pulled out a little over 8k various conduits. yea I had to much stuff in one spot ;-).
That is not block updates.

How about having there be a chance that the neutron is deleted?
