Just in time for the new school year! Become a better student and earn Diamonds by playing Minecraft and answering math questions based on your grade level. More grades and subjects coming soon.
I wrote this mod because my kids boycotted summer workbooks, and thought playing Minecraft would be a more fun way to retain the math they learned. This mod is best for retention and learning multiplication where repetition is one of the best ways to learn and remember.
This mod is not a competitor of MinecraftEdu. Where MinecraftEdu is geared toward classroom use, this mod is much smaller and focused on the Student's single player solo play at home or in the computer lab.
Features
* Randomly generates math questions based on the student's grade.
* Configurable grade levels 1-4. Default grade 1. More grades coming soon.
* Configurable minutes between questions. Default 3 min between questions.
* Gives the player increasing rewards in Single Player based on correct streaks.
* Free and Open Source!
Good job, I wont personally be using it due to I'm going to college and this would just be cheating for me but none the less good job.
Thanks for the feedback!
That's several requests now for adding custom questions that would be useful to a wider audience and all grade levels and even University.
So what I was thinking was the ability to add your own questions by dropping a question file into a directory. I'm not sure the technical details yet, but for example it might be a CSV where column 1 is grade level, column 2 question text, column 3 answer
For example: Grade,Question,Answer
8,What year was the US Declaration of Independence signed?,1776
U,A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly over a time of 5.21 seconds for a distance of 110 m. Determine the acceleration of the car.,a = 8.10 m/s/s
U would be for University or any question that doesn't fall into the standard 1-12 grades. A lot of higher level questions won't be possible to answer in a text field, with special characters and math symbols, so I'll probably have to figure out a way to do mulitple choice for questions that you can't answer with typing on a keyboard.

That specific example isn't really university level, seeing as I did that stuff in freshman physical science two years ago (highschool freshman, not college).
Other than that, great application/mod. I love the idea and could see this having great potential!

Haha! Good point It's been so long since I was in school I couldn't remember what types of questions I had in my University physics class, so I just grabbed one off a search that looked close, but it's just an example anyway.
Does anyone have good examples of University level questions that can be phrased and answered using ascii characters in a text field?
If people helped you, you could just add "packs" or "addons" ppl could download and drag in the folder
Especially useful for higher levels.
This is exactly what I'm working on right now! People will be able to drop csv question packs into a questionpacks directory in their .minecraft folder. I went with a simple csv format vs xml because not everyone can write xml, but any teacher with a spreadsheet can create a csv.
Please make this compatible for more than just grade school math. I'd love it if I could port my MCAT study flash cards to something in minecraft.
Great idea! In the next update you will have the ability to import any questions you like via a questionpack CSV that you drop into a directory. This would be perfect for MCAT flash cards. After the this feature is available I would love to see an example of you doing this.
This is usefull. Now I can learn Latin ánd play minecraft. (If the configurable questions are added.)
That's the plan! Now the hard pard is going to be building up a repository of questionpacks that people create and share. I'll probably create a sharing site where people can share and download questionpacks.
I like the potential for this! I find studying easily, mostly, but if I ever need to study for something, I'll defiantly use this...once the pack system comes out. I doubt I'll see many 1st grade math questions

Hello!
Changing the grade level is easy. Just open the config file with any text editor and change the student_grade=1 to student_grade=3 save it and restart minecraft. you can also edit the minutes between questions here too.
The config file is located here: .minecraft/config/MCSTUDENT.cfg
This mod is definitely not fake and it's a win-win because it will help you practice math and convince your parents to let you play more minecraft!
I remember when you were in the development forums making this. . .
I'm glad to see it released. Excellent work on the GUIs, and an awesome concept for students. One suggestion - keep doing what you're doing! More grades and possibly other subjects than math would be really cool!

Open to suggestions!
How about using xml files? They're much easier to interface with when it comes to interacting with a file from java. Just a thought.

Thank you for the review! My first community review for my first mod, exiting! I left you a comment, and Like.
And your motto for your banner should be "Minecraft Student: Study while you procrastinate" Cool mod
edit: didn't notice you had the grade thing already
