Hi, is it safe/stable to run in 1.7.2 yet?
Just check the spotlight video, it's awesome
Awesome? Is it really? Or does it LOOK awesome...?
Nah, kidding, it's great if you have the patience for it all. And from what I could tell when I played it with AE2 for a few hours, it's fairly stable, though I suggest still being careful. Blood magic, powerful... At a cost.

Yep! Just make sure you get right version as we have one for 1.6 as well. The 1.7 is a little behind our 1.6, but keep an eye out for an update soon. As for how stable, we had a solid week of closed beta testing to find an iron out all the bugs that came with the update. Everything should work just fine.... You can trust a madman after all!

I'd like to point out that you pay for the muscle action needed to contract your diaphragm with Minor jolts of Electricity from your brain and ATP, which is to say, the currency of cells, which makes breathing a bunch of the smallest Micro-transactions ever all occurring at roughly the same time.
Bug...? I put Air sigil, fast miner and green grove into the sigil of holding, and I cannot add blood lamp as well. I was able to put 4 sigils into my other sigil of holding.

I'm well aware of how much bio-electricity is required to breathe, and that breathing isn't free. However, I was talking about oxygen, not the ability to breathe. Major difference, as we do not need to actually pay for oxygen itself. Plants generate oxygen from photons and carbon-dioxide. Carbon-dioxide is a byproduct of life itself, and even plants can produce more, so that isn't really an issue. Sunlight... Meh, nobody's going to pay for the sun to rise in the morning.

Yes true, but the sun pays for the sunlight with sacrificing some of its atoms in nuclear fusion processes.

Hail the textbook, for the textbook contains knowledge and knowledge is power. Those who do not seek new knowledge even occasionally are likely to live their whole life in a state of un- fulfilling stagnation.
I know it's been mentioned before, but this mod really needs an in-game book or two.
At this point it's the only thing keeping me from downloading.
Well, in the latest patch we got some NEI recipes for the blood altar and alchemical chemistry set. Once you have the basic mechanics down, blood magic is simple(But not easy).
Way has plans for in game docs, but they are a low priority thing. Way wants to add more content instead of just writing about what is already there. Besides, there is a LOT of mod here to write about. Way could add three sigils, a ritual, and two demons in the time it takes to code the frame work to add the books. Lets not get started on what he could do in the time it takes to actually WRITE everything...
Also, from one gentleman scholar to another, a lovely avatar you have. Puts this madman in the mood for a good puzzle...
When you put a hopper on top of the altar you can put more than 1 item in it, it yields the same amount when you take it out, but it also uses the same amount of life essence it would if you would've put 1 at a time in. so if you want to change this, it's up to you. It isn't really causing any problems with balance.
Completely intentional!

So, just getting started with this mod in 1.7.2. I like how well it seems put together, and how novel/creative it seems. Some bits could be a little more informative I think. But also fun to learn on my own.
From what I can tell, the Blood Altar is mostly just there for performing whatever rituals, while the Orb/Network is there to kinda keep things running, yes?
Think the getting started bits could use a little more info though. Like, is it best to set up the altar somewhere safe/secure, or out in the field where you can have various farms/spawners set up for sacrifice?
Something that doesn't seem mentioned, does the altar lose blood over time if it's not doing anything? Or is that just the "filling the buffer" thing mentioned somewhere?
Totally get that early on you just deal with sacrificing your own life to get things going, but is there some intended way of moving away from that? There's the Sacrifice Dagger, but if that only works close to the Altar, it seems of limited use unless you have an abundance of things near to sacrifice. Which would point to having quick access to farms or spawners being the ideal. Right now near the start, it just seems like there's a massive capacity that I'll never stay on top of for not regen-ing fast enough.
Which might simply be part of my problem for not having any other mods installed that could supply faster healing. Maybe it's meant to work well with potions which I haven't gotten to yet. Also probably doesn't help that I'm trying this solo, so no server buds to work together.
Just feels like there's a lot of meat for me to get into, but I'm not quite sure how I'm supposed to break through the surface and get to the goodness.

It has a few other uses, but crafting is the main use. As for the soul network, think of it as a battery connected to your soul. Most things use the SN to charge the user for rituals and the like.

Where you build the altar is personal preference. The altar works fine under ground, in the air, in a building, or in the open. As for safe or farms, it depends on whether you want to use sacrifice or self sacrifice. You'll want somewhere safer if you go self, and near a mob spawner or mob farm for normal sacrifice.
As for the altar losing blood, it does not. Once the buffer is full it should never need to be refilled and the passive drain will be gone (Note, the buffer is always ten percent of the altars max capacity. You can upgrade the altar capacity later.)

Well, it is kind of hard to fill an altar that isn't near by, isn't it? This is sort of intentional, making you think of ways to get mobs there to sacrifice. You could try using a villager as bait, building a darkroom, setting up a pit... You've got choices, so there are many ways to feed your altar. Latter on you can get rituals to help you fill the altar, but they are a little pricy to build and to activate.
As for regen, there are a few ways with only vanilla. You could make potions if you find melon seeds or can get ghast tears. If you use blood magic flasks, you get eight uses per item. But always remember, take your time with crafting. You're paying with your life, so be careful not to give to much... You can always pool your life in the altar when you have food and time spare, and any craft can be started no matter how much is already in the altar. You'll need to remember that when you need to do big crafts like the magicians blood orb.

You can get from start to end with only blood magic, and with only your self. I've done it before, and it gets easier as time goes on.
There is enough mod here to go head to head with other mods like ars magica and thaumcraft, so feel free to ask any questions you have! We will help if we can, and I for one know blood magic like the back of my hand. I recommend the potions, if only to help you get started.

I absolutely agree with in-game documentation being lower-priority than content. Although, if and when the documentation framework is added, I'd be willing to pitch in with some writing. I'm decent- Not the best ever at writing, but I'd be willing to write as much or little as you'd have me do.
As I went to bed last night, I did come up with an idea or two on how I'm going to make this work for me. Quick question, does sacrificing squids work to fill the altar?
I've built my base into an Extreme Hills+ mountain. Think I'll try making some form of mob farm in the space above the altar room, and funnel them down to right above the altar. This is gonna look great if it works out like in my head. Only thing to decide is if it'll be squids or zombie/skeletons...

Squids should work fine. They count as a passive mob, so I would go more for a zombie/skeleton farm for LE. Remeber that the altar has a vary short range of a 5X5x5 cube centered on the altar. If the dagger insta-kills everything you hit, then your in range.

But I doubt WayOfTime would be happy about that.
