I like the flowing life essence. Looks nice. How does the altar recognize the bottom tier with an incomplete altar base? I thought it required a complete tier 1 base for each beacon.
Nope. It doesn't require a base for the beacons at all.
200 per heart, and a ***** takes one heart. With a whole bunch of self sacrifice runes on a tier five altar, you can get upwards of 1500 LP per heart. I have no idea how much LP you'd get per heart with all self sacrifice runes, but it'd probably be enough to make just about anything fairly sustainable, as long as you have a bunch of food. Self Sacrifice altars for the win.
Edit: I just realized that this was a question to another person. This reminds me of the scenario where somebody says hi, and then you say hi back, and then the person behind you they were actually saying hi to responds. Sorry. :B
Edit: I just realized that this was a question to another person. Sorry. :B I'm an idiot.
No worries. I don't always/often quote, so sometimes it can get confusing for anyone that reads replies as individual posts. I'm from a different part of the 'net where threads are fairly linear and quoting isn't always necessary.
It's not pure. I've got 8 speed runes and 10 capacity runes. I gain 2,000 per knife use.
Ahh. Still seems rather balanced, and is the direction I've been thinking my altar will go. Enough Self-Sacrifice that I can fill the altar with a few hearts or so, Capacity if I can fill it even faster [though from that setup of yours I suspect self-sacrifice has a sorta-low limit], and Speed if I can regen faster than the altar can drain.

Way, I know you've been working on the books and all, and I can't wait! I was wondering however if you were planning to add compatibility with baubles in the future?
Config file man?
I can't find one... need some configs to customize my mod pack
P.S. You teh best

The config file is named "AWWayofTime". Why? When Way first made this mod, it was named "Alchemical wizardry", and the config file name is a side effect of this.

Question not the mad-mans ways, for you may begin to see logic in his actions, then find yourself mad as well.
You may call me The Madman, as there is no name that suits me better.
I happen to make modded survival maps, if your interested see my latest: The Asylum
'nother question, 'nother question! I know, I'm full of them. Sick of me yet?
Fellow mages, what methods do you find best for drawing mobs near enough to be sacrificed? I've got myself a lovely platform up in the Nether sky, and am constantly greeted by an abundance of pigmen. I have my altar set up in the center so the entire platform is useful for spawning [although getting their attention is more tricky... but the rafters I built above the platform to prevent ghasts also seem safe enough to poke the piggies until all eyes are on me]. My problem is, I need some safe area to stand while I slaughter the aggravated masses. I've got the altar fenced off around the Tier 3 pillars, but that also keeps all the pigmen out of range for the Dagger. They can reach through fences to hit me, so I have to have some reasonable amount of space to stay safe. I've got a floating slab above the altar that can keep me safe; I can open the fence gates to let the pigmen come, and stab them from above. But this doesn't work so well when I need to actually access the altar.
Is my best option possibly just building a Well of Suffering under the platform/altar so they can automatically be bled from a slightly safer distance without endangering my body? Or was I possibly mistaken in putting the altar on the same platform as the spawning? Maybe would've been more prudent putting the altar a few levels below and having them fall into a holding area above it for sacrificing...
Alright, the few of you who visit our IRC channel(#bloodmagic on esper.net, for those who don't know and want to stop by for a quick chat) will know I've been working on a hardcore questing map for the past two weeks. I'm happy to say it is finally ready for public testing!
It is a survival island map with a heavy focus on magic mods, and I welcome all to come and give it a try!
Just happened to discover this while testing. Iron Golems seem to be treated as hostile mobs with regards to LP gained from sacrificing them with the dagger. Which, unless I'm mistaken, makes them one of if not the only mob that you can get more out of via the Well than you can through direct sacrifice. But for that resource cost, not sure it's actually worth it. [I realize re-reading this that the Well thing is true regardless. Still interesting that they give 500. Considering their health and being passive, suppose it's a reasonable compromise, really. Though using Suffering, you could get double that, without any runes...]
Squids also seem to act as a hostile mob, giving base 500 LP. [and which could make it awesome/fun/useful to set up an altar under the ocean with a Dome going on... if I could figure out how to get squids down to the altar...]
Endermen seem to be special in that they give 200 LP. Which... is even less than the livestock. Considering the trouble to get them to the altar, would've thought that'd be higher. Unless! Maybe it was lowered because you could set up an altar in The End and have a pretty steady supply... that's actually another good idea. Bit of a shame on that LP yield, though.
Ghasts also only give 500 LP. Reasonable, in that they are a standard hostile mob. But, considering their size, and the danger involved in attempting to get one near an altar, could it hurt to give them a big bonus?
Also personal suggestion, maybe Witches oughtta have a slightly higher yield, both for their rarity and their similarity to villagers. Somewhere between hostiles and villagers maybe. I'm fine with them where they're at, but could logically make sense to tweak them.
Snowmen give the hostile 500 LP. That... could actually be a useful thing. Make a few for an infinite snow supply, with a pumpkin farm... I think I may have just found my replacement for chickens when I need a boost of blood.
All others seem to act as one would expect, hostiles and passives. Just thought I'd go ahead and test what I'd be getting out of various farms. Although, if much of this was meant to be secret, I suppose I can edit/remove. Some of it I brought up more as a "is this supposed to be this way" sort of thing.

Thaumcraft can really help you out here, but the Ritual of Containment can also help. What you need to do is keep your altar in the dark to spawn enemies, then use Thaumcraft's Paving Stone of Warding to protect yourself from the enemies, which you can store up with the ritual of containment. That doesn't really help you before you reach the point of being able to use the ritual of containment though.
Without thaumcraft, fences could do the job, but would be much less convenient.
Using a well of suffering under the altar is a great idea, but not necessarily the best for crafting. For crafting you need quick bursts of life essence, which a well of suffering is unsuitable for.
I'm rather enjoying my solo-mod experience, so alas, Thaumcraft is out of the question currently. Ritual of containment is a possibility, but I don't know if it has the range I need to draw mobs in in this situation. I should hope it has the capability to hold all the pigmen that spawn, but there is still a sliver of doubt, considering just how many it'll try packing into a tight area...
Think a well of suffering really won't be enough? Hm. Worrying. Even with a tier 3 or 4 altar full of sacrifice runes, and at least 30ish pigmen crowded in range? I shouldn't have too much trouble setting up the well, just some tedium in building more ritual stones, and another Wither for the activation crystal.
Can someone with NEI or something possibly list the recipe for the Sigil of Ender Severence? This would be a beautiful thing to have for an End altar.
Demonic slate in the centre, Master Blood Orb below, weak blood shard on top, Eyes of Ender next to the slate and Ender Pearls in the corners. You're welcome.

If I'm rude to you, just tell me. Don't take it too personally. Well, unless you were being stupid. If you were, DO take it personally.
Something I would like to request is to implement some kind of book guide, like Thaumcraft, Ars Magica, Botania, Mariculture, etc. have. This mod has lots of amazing content, but it's irritating to constantly switch between programs. The book could also enhance the lore more, like Thaumcraft does.
Has been requested at least once per page now. From what I have heard, books are in the works.

I'm pretty sure it's a sigil that prevents Endermen from teleporting around near you. It's useful if you're making an enderman farm in the end. I'm probably wrong, though.
