I'm going to push out a tiny update because I will be going away for a few days.
Here's a list of some of the new features.
Some gases have had their properties slightly altered.
Gas pockets are now rarer (it was getting out of hand before).
Added a new hazard at the bedrock layer.
Gases now look better both on the inside and outside.
Improved physics between gases of different densities.
Burning gases will now result in smoke emissions.
The player is *cough* less able to breathe gases *cough*.
Added Herobrine.
Early stage lanterns. Please avoid using for now.
added Herobrine ADDED HEROBRINE WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!?
OT
I like the mod, and wouldn't it be cool to have machines that release harnessed gasses, and vents to carry the gas.
Mob gas chambers.
Huh.
Very cool mod. The explosive gas almost scared me out of my chair XD
Add a gas that makes you nauseaous, gives you mining fautige, slowness, etc. It would be amazing!
I would be sooooooo happy if this gets implimented into the game officialy
Gases. They are a major danger to miners in the real world, and sometimes a great natural resource if it is the right kind of gas. Seeing as how we have to spend some time at least partially underground, lets see if we can make this a little more interesting than it is now..
I know it has been suggested, suggested, and suggested again, but I want to make a super-thread of sorts for it.
Note I will be using "damp," terms, names for gases used by British miners in the older days. While I could use the scientific names for them, they seem lame and out of place for the game.
0. General Gas Behavior http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas
Movement: All gases will have the same general movement. Movement will essentially be like water, but upwards. Gas will always spawn in caves. Gas is unbreathable, and therefore you can drown from entering a cloud of gas. They are usually found in pockets in the ceiling, in small patches, though they will vent from the floor, making them a hazard, such as lava.
1. Blackdamp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackdamp
A mixture of unbreathable gases, it happens when coal is exposed to oxygen for a time. It would act like water, except flowing upwards and such. When entering a cloud of it, your oxygen bubbles will appear, and as with water, if you run out, you can, "drown." Torches cannot be placed in the clouds, as there is no oxygen to burn. Found in mines and caves, always in the presence of exposed coal.
Breakdown:
-The gas is a relatively easy to avoid taking harm from, and eliminate
-Acts like a normal gas, as described in part 0
-While unseen in real life, the clouds would be semi-transparent, making the area its in slightly darker.
-Found in mines and caves, always in the presence of exposed coal.
Uses: It can be used for a fire retardent system, if you have a wooden floor. If the floor catches fire, and you have gas under your floors, it will smother the fires. Other than that, no practical uses.
2. Firedamp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firedamp
A name given to a mixture of explosive gases, mostly methane, that again usually is found near coal. It acts like a gas, as described in part 0. But instead of being like water, it acts a lot more like TNT, albeit hitting it will not cause it to explode, and at half power. When torches are placed into a cloud of it, each gas block will then act like a block of TNT, and then proceed to explode, most likely killing you and destroying a large chunk of rock. When mining in a cloud (which you shouldn't do as you can still drown), there a 10% chance when mining rock, you will set off the cloud.
Breakdown:
-The gas is again, easy to avoid taking harm from, and eliminate
-Acts like a normal gas, as described in part 0
-While unseen in real life, the clouds would be semi-transparent, and ever so slightly red, as a warning/indication.
-When in contact with fire/torches, or having stone mined within the cloud (10% chance), it will explode, each gas block acting like TNT, though at half power.
Uses: It can be used as cheap, never ending TNT, useful for clearing out a tunnel, or as a one time trap.
3. Afterdamp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afterdamp
A name given to a mixture of toxic gases. It acts like a conventional gas, as usual. Instead of being like water, as described in Blackdamp, but rather acts like fire. Entering the cloud will cause you to take damage as if you were on fire. Leaving the cloud is the only way to escape death (Or by wearing an oxygen mask[Described later]). Torches cannot be placed within the cloud.
Breakdown:
-The gas is harder to avoid, and take care of, as it damages you on head contact.
-Acts like a normal gas
-While unseen in real life, the clouds would be semi-transparent, and ever so slightly green, as a warning/indication.
-Causes damage on contact, acting like fire. Leaving the cloud will stop damage.
Uses: Its just a hazard, and is useful for traps.
4. Natural Gas http://en.wikipedia....iki/Natural_gas
Ah, natural gas, finally a gas that is helpful. It is a conventional gas, though it is flammable, though not explosive. Having it in contact with a torch/flame will set the gas blocks on fire, and having it all go to waste. What can you use it for? A supremely long lasting furnace fuel, and probably other things that I haven't thought of.
Breakdown:
-The gas is easy to avoid and eliminate if you wish to do so.
-Acts like a normal gas
-While unseen in real life, the clouds would be semi-transparent, and ever so slightly purple, as an indication
-Flammable, but not explosive
-Can be harvested, and used for 320 uses in a furnace.
Uses: Furnace fuel
5. Smoke http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoke
Smoke will be a product of burning blocks. It will act a lot like afterdamp, though its damage rate is way slower than the actual thing. Other than that, its pretty much a normal gas (While not really being a gas). It should also be noted that Netherstone could emit smoke, but its debatable.
Uses: Its smoke. It also cannot be harvested.
6. Ascendium
Its a gas of my own making, just a little something interesting
Anyways, its a magical gas that is many, many times lighter than air, in fact, its lifting power is strong enough to lift you! Its only relation to gases is that it goes upward. You can breathe in it, torches can be used in them, and it goes up at a rate superior to anything else. The patches are also rare as diamond.
Breakdown:
-Not a typical gas, going up is it's only relation
-You can breathe in it, torches can be used in it, and you can jump into the cloud to get a lift!
-Rare as diamond, the gas patches are
Uses: Elevators, and something to fling you up many blocks into the air
8. Gas Harvesting
Since I couldn't find any small scale, one man usable gas harvesting tool, I'll just come up with one.
Introducing.. the gas bucket/cylinder!
[]
[]
Yes, you can use it to collect any* of the gases, including the explosive gas.
9. Oxygen Mask/Oxygen Tank
I'll just borrow some designs from my Oceancraft thread then..
Oxygen Mask:
[] []
Oxygen Tank:
[]
=Leather =String
Have these on when entering a cloud and you won't drown/get poisoned by them.
So yeah. Questions, comments, concerns?
*Excludes smoke
These are not my ideas but I am bringing them up from a topic in the WIP section.

PUHLEASE in the new update make the gas mod compatable with optifine.
And about the gas pockets being out of hand, I totaly disagree. It was the perfect amount.
You should also add gas tanks because the explosive gas is a perfect mining explosive since it all explodes at the same time.
Keep this mod going! I love it (but please give the gasses a real name not tile.gasFallingExplosive.name, its a little weird)!
Oh and it would be cool if you could make like throwable matches, torches etc. so we can blow up explosive gas, light flammable gas without killing ourselves. Also add geysers to deserts were it puts out a lot of steam out of either a two block hole or something like that. Or you could make gas vents for every gas (such as geysers for steam)
This is a really cool idea, I would like to see more stuff with gasses. Hope you don't mind if I try adding some similar stuff in my mods (If it isn't fine with you, I won't. But this is too cool and I want to try it) Personally I would have used entities, but the blocks work well too
will this be compatible with tekkit and the like in a future fuel source update?
I intend to do this, but it will most likely not be in the near future. The are a lot of features I have to create first before I can move to that. I might go two paths and create one version which uses the tools included in tekkit, and one which uses my own set of tools.
Here is a list of Items that I wish for this mod :
-gasmasks
-gasgranades with poisons like sickness
-possibility to make power with gas
Would be nice if you answer me .
As already mentioned in the opening post, gas will very soon have a useful purpose. I might implement some kind of gas mask, but I feel that gas grenades stray off completely from the style of Minecraft. This mod isn't meant as a simple extension, it is merely a mod aiming to change survival mode.
May I use your mod for my modpack? I'll give you credit and link the mod.
I would rather not have my mod included in a modpack. I feel modpacks direct the attention the wrong way, people can find their own mods and thrive with that. I might, of course, make an exception if this mod goes spot on with the theme of the pack.
On another note, I am back from a small trip and will now be able to develop the mod further.
Cool, I haven't personally used this mod but I've seen some people do mod reviews on it. I've always thought of a similar concept for a mod, though I have no clue how to mod and I'm a tad bit too lazy to try. My idea was a mod that adds gases, but equivalently oxygen and pressure! The ability to move (or remove gases) using pumps and vents, having them move through simple airy blocks like wood and glass and having special blocks that are air tight! Sorry to get off topic, I just thought I'd mention...
Hello everyone! An update is going to be rolled out TONIGHT! This image shows what you should be looking forward to! It's up to you to figure out if you want to sacrifice some resources to create gas-safe lighting.
Follow the topic to find out exactly when it is going to be released!
Because this is not a ModLoader mod or a Forge mod, it has to be installed on a clean instance of Minecraft. You can do this by navigating to your .minecraft folder and locating the "versions" folder. Since the mod is for minecraft 1.6.2, you can create a copy of the "1.6.2" folder inside. If it does not exist, run Minecraft as 1.6.2 and look again. Just make sure you have a copy of the folder. Rename the new folder to "1.6.2-gases". You will also have to go inside the folder and rename both files to "1.6.2-gases". The next thing you have to do is open "1.6.2-gases.json" in a text editor and change the first line that says "1.6.2" to "1.6.2-gases". Finally, open "1.6.2-gases.jar" in a zip archive tool, and paste the contents from the downloaded mod inside, then delete the folder "META_INF".
The next time you open your Minecraft launcher, a new version will have appeared in the profile editor. Select the new version. You can now play Minecraft with gases!
Also, good news, everyone! I am currently working hard on converting the mod into a Forge mod! Stay tuned!
would be cool if there were like some kinda nether-gas
I also think a nether gas would be cool.
Does anyone have any good ideas for a special property for this gas? Perhaps something really special that makes it useful? How about an acidic gas, perhaps?

maybe nausa and blindness, even though i have no idea why. or some kind OF EVIL MIX OF THE EXPLOSION GAS AND FLAMIBLE GAS!! MUAHAHAH!! or not.

i also just noticed your the maker of the mod :P. i also just watched AntVenom's video about this mod, and in the video, the smoke didn't harm him like smoke does in real life... i think? anyway, if it does, maybe you could get, like a posion or wither effect, or any effect that pics away at your health slowly, because from experience from random fire safety parades smoke harms you, so yeah.

hm. maybe the gas can cause the wither effect, and sence it is a acid it could break weak blocks.

maybe we could devices to hold and control gases we find, but also maybe a gas that, when placed goes in any direction it can. like if placed in midair it would go down,up,left, right, forwad, and backward, or if theres only 1 exit it will traverse in that direction , it would be great for adventure maps /w mods
added Herobrine
