The nether star for the core may be a touch too expensive (I might tweak it for the next release) but the items themselves never break and and very useful for survival play.
maybe make two items: one that summons a pet wolf that stays for a minute(has cooldown) and one that spawns an ocelot that follows you for a minute(with cooldown) Video almost up. Maybe even a bag that links to your enderchest.
Maybe some diamond blocks or enchanted golden apples instead for the core? I know it's expensive but I don't really want to have to summon and kill a bunch of withers to get the items late game. Keep in mind the nether star isn't guaranteed to drop from the wither.

yes it is...Also, if you're ever stuck and dont know how to do something, the irc channel #minecraftforgetuts is an awesome place to go. I don't mod but the people there do. It is pretty helpful.
I would agree with previous comments i think a diamond block would be more suitable or maybe multiple crated together to make a new item for the core would help because fighting the wither in survival is just pointless to be honest in vanilla, as well as a nuisance.
