Actually you can get the Forge log. It's in your minecraft folder and is really better to use for figuring out what happened than the regular mc crash log. It also creates a log whether there is a crash or not so you can always see what's going on.
No new patch, a few things that I think still need resolving.

You have to do that for any mod that modifies terrain.
Well...not completely. You could go to unexplored areas and they would be there. Or if you use Mystcraft you could create a new age and they would be there too. Or you could use an editing tool in your world to delete areas and let them regenerate.
