Notch promised us a mod API back in, I want to say 0.7.2... you'd think by now he (and now Jeb) would have finished the bleep-ing thing! *sigh*
And true, I'm betting it'll take a while for the mod authors to switch from using forge hooks to native hooks when we do get an official API... oh well...
The modding API is on the goal list for next year so, not too much longer, 1.7.2 was the start for it, so relax. I am a bit impatient my self for easier modding but yeaah, that stuff takes time.

Here's a suggestion, add a sword that can be crafted out of the star pieces and call it starlight (or whatever seems fitting) for the next update.

I don't know if NMcCoy's plans have changed, and can't speak for him, but he was previously going to wait until 1.7 to re-write the mod. Forge/MCP will update soon, so he'll have the ability to as soon as they do.

I'm a developer (9 years experience) and I'd like to lend a hand making starbeam torches more easy to use. I like the concept, it's just that the pathing is too touchy for most uses and the momentum mechanic makes two way journeys impossible. I'd love to have an alternative to powered rail, and I'd be happy to pay diamond, gold, and stardust to get it.
With some access to code, I could do it myself. I know it's no fun when people put more work on you. I think better starbeam paths would be a really sought after feature and would make star hunting more rewarding.
Being the giant Zelda fan that I am, this is extremely awesome to play around with =D My favorite having to be the Hookshot of course, easily my favorite item in any Zelda game =3

Scattershot- Upgraded Slingshot, does x2 damage!
Deku Seeds- Used to grow Deku Flowers. Drops from Deku Flowers. Used as ammo for the sling shot.
Deku Flowers- Grown by planting Deku Seeds! Drops Deku Seeds when harvested! (Naturally spawn throughout world)
Master Sword- A sword stronger than all others! Spawns somewhere in a forest! (One per world, Really FREAKING powerful!
Double Hookshot- Left click shoots shot one, right click shoots shot two!
Zelda Chest- Has one item slot and is only accesible when there is an item in it!
Spikes- A 1 hit kill item for map makers (No recipe)
Fairies- Caught in Empty Bottles (When right clicked gets a rare item!)
Empty Bottle- Special item that catches Fairies!
