This is really neat, and I'm looking forward to doing a mod showcase on this. Awesome mod, man.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I sometimes post random things. Do try to ignore them if you don't understand. I also do gaming videos on the Youtubes. http://youtube.com/GamingVirtue
It demonstrates the work of Scenter 1.0.0 from first person view. Although it seems the author did not know that he could switch between the ore types by pressing 'O' repeatedly.
And he calls it "too overpowered".
That should be ipodmail i think, must be his earlier (but not too early) videos.
This is interesting! Feels less cheaty than an actual x-ray. The fact that it is configurable is awesome.
Sadly, I have one request. If you hit F5 (on PC) the trail runs continuously but orienting and digging is hard for me in over the shoulder view.
Would it be possible to add an option that would similarly run the trail of the active selection continuously while in first person perspective, without having to click the mouse?

That you can see the particle trail continuously in 3rd-person view is not a feature but a bug.
Thank you for reporting this.
I'll see what I can do.
I really, REALLY like this mod and the way it works. Reminds me of the treasure potions from Terraria. Would love a version where the ability was acquired by some sort of potion/enchantment, maybe using spider eyes combined with other stuff or something for potions. No idea how hard that would be or what would be required to do so. Either way, very nice job.
Thank you for this suggestion.
I'll think about this.
Cool, but maybe something to make it less OP, like making it only work when your hunger is full/having a cost. EDIT: Make it require atleast one of the certain item to be able to scent it out.
Thank you.
This suggestion points into the same direction (see above).

I've had my eye on this mod for a while because the concept was novel and useful, but haven't actually used it because I considered it too OP. Binding the ability to some sort of item would definitely make it a keeper, though I'm not certain if potions would make sense, and it doesn't seem as if any of the potential potion ingredients are really expensive enough to balance it. Perhaps a wearable item like goggles, or something you have to actively use or hover over on your hotbar, like a dowsing rod?
Ok, two things;
One: Would it still work if you ass an ore with a block number like xx:x? By this I mean, is it okay if the colon is in the layout?
EDIT: It is not, and I wish it was, since mods I am using add 50+ ores and blocks that I want to scent out.
This is a bug in minecraft 1.6. We have to wait until Mojang fixed this. See Key Bindings Not Saving.
Can you give me the block IDs and the mod name these IDs come from?
Mick, is there any way to have Scenter seek out blocks with id's such as 906:2 or 1049:4?
I'm using Metallurgy 3 and Biomes o' Plenty, and those blocks have id's such as those.
I tried adding said block id's into the scenter.config file and it actually broke Scenter.

Yes, there is. Just add the ID values to the Scenter.targets.cfg file.
But note, in case of a subtype don't use a colon ":" as the separator char but a slash "/".
In your case, instead of adding "906:2" you should add "906/2" into Scenter.targets.cfg.
I am having an issue w/ 2.2.0 where if I add a mod ore to the targets it will display the unlocalized name.
It seems that not all mods use the same technique to set the display name of their custom items and blocks.
I hope have found a solution that will work with any variant.
This fix is included into the new release 2.3.1 which is available now.

Thank you so much, I had added them but I got the same error as Lol_Stuff where Scenter wouldn't activate because it couldn't read one of the lines.
I had looked in the "How to Configure" section, but I must've missed that, thank you for the help!

I just released Scenter 2.3.0 which is compatible with Minecraft 1.6.2.

How to fix that? I also tried adding id of the game (249), the same effect.
