The Lord of the Rings Mod is a huge expansion for Minecraft that aims to add the world of Middle-earth into the game. This will include content from J. R. R. Tolkien's most famous work, The Lord of the Rings, and from other related tales such as The Hobbit and The Silmarillion.
The mod has been in development since December 2012, with a great amount of planned features yet to come in the future. New updates are published frequently - usually every couple of months.
The complete changelog for all released versions can be viewed here.
This mod contains a version checker.
Warning: If you are running the mod on a Cauldron (MCPC+) server, you may experience unexpected bugs, crashes or other failures that are not this mod's fault. Please see here for an explanation of why it is not this mod's fault, and why I cannot really do anything to fix it.

NEI Plugin
The Ranger Malvegil is developing a plugin for Not Enough Items (NEI) for use with the Lord of the Rings Mod, that shows crafting recipes on Middle-earth tables, barrel brewing recipes, and other recipes from the mod. Thanks, Malvegil!
You can find the forum thread for this plugin here, with downloads and information.
Note that this plugin is not affiliated with the LOTR mod: you should report any problems, crashes, etc. to them, not to us.
TheAtlanticCraft's Fellowship modpack includes the Lord of the Rings Mod along with over 50 other mods, and they have dedicated public servers running the pack. The link goes to their Minecraft Forums thread which has all the links and information you should need to download and install the modpack. Please note that feedback/bug reports/other issues concerning the Fellowship modpack should be discussed on their forums and websites, and not on this forum post.
If you want to create and publish your own modpack including the mod, you don't need to ask for my permission, but you must credit me as the author of this mod and provide a link to this post. It's only fair!
(If the modpack is just for private use, i.e. it won't be posted anywhere for the public to use - such as for your own use and a small group of friends on a private server - there's no need to do that.)
This mod (plugin, a patch to Minecraft source, henceforth "Mod" or "The Mod"), excepting any and all characters, locations, etc. or other trademarks, which are the intellectual property of the Tolkien Estate, Warner Bros. Entertainment, or other related entities, is the property of the Mod author (Mevans, henceforth "Owner" or "The Owner"). It may only be mirrored or reposted with advance written permission of the Owner. The Mod is intended as a tribute to the Lord of the Rings and the world of Middle-earth and the Owner makes no claim upon the Lord of the Rings or any associated trademarks of the Tolkien Estate, Warner Bros. Entertainment, or other related entities, nor does he affiliate himself with them in any way.
-Adding those Dog Type mounts with orcs on top, that would spawn in plains, in groups.
-Adding Those big walking trees that you could mount if you are good or gain their trust by....
The dog type mounts are called "Wargs", and the big walking trees are called "Ents".
Anyway, I have never seen any LOTR mod like this! This one is much more different than all the others I've seen and looks like it will actually be finished! I will definitely be getting this when it's released! Great job!
Adding Bilbo's sword(It glows when orcs are close)
Bilbo's sword is called "Sting".
How much damage do the Orc weapons do? And for crafting, will the handles be sticks, or some other material?
EDIT: Oh, and for Sauron, you could maybe make the big tower(forgot its name) in Mordor with the big eye(Sauron) on it and when you get within 100-150 blocks of him he will spawn massive hordes of Orcs and Uruk-Hai(bigger/stronger Orcs).
Yeah, all we need is Ents, Wargs, specially generated towns and structures, definitely need the Mines of Moria(with goblins and the almighty Balrog of course), dwarves, elves, other settlements of man, special NPCs(Frodo, Sam, Aragorn/Strider, Gandalf, Saruman, Treebeard, Legolas, Gimli, Elrond, Arwen, Merry, Pippin, etc.), and much much more. You can't forget lembas bread, that elven bread that fills you up with a single bite.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I just took the Minecraft Noob test! Check out what I scored. Think you can beat me?!
Structures and NPCs are planned, and I've started working on hobbit holes today. Lembas bread has also been added since the last update. Remember this is just a small preview, although it will get much bigger as we approach release, and I've only been developing the mod for the past couple of weeks.
Gollum and Bilbo are planned to be added as NPCs. I'm not sure how to go about creating such a huge and complex structure as Minas Tirith and making it generate smoothly into the world, but it's definitely an important feature so will be added at some point.
thank you for replying, because the mod won't be out could you make a Lord of the rings texture pack instead?
For the mod Like how the way Dwarves see it and you could be smaller than usual
P.S can you make a Selection bar so when you spawn you get a list of races ( E.G hobbit, elf, human, dwarf, and Orc)
each one has a special ability or inability (Humans are Like Steves) hobbits and dwarves will be 1 and a half size,
Elves are taller and can jump higher, and Orcs get a whole army and Orc weapons such as a scmitar (Orc Sword)
also orcs will not be harmed by NPC orcs only armed NPCs such as Elves, Humans And the remains of the Dwarves,
Dwarves should also be rare to find as an NPC about the world, if you would like to know why i'm talking about
them being rarer, WELL READ THE HOBBIT!!!!
Orcs should also get killed if you disobey the orders, i spotted a bar at the top of the screen marking where the ring is,
Safe or Danger should the orcs job is to kill the npc Sam and Frodo, which only appear when your not them, get the ring, and
gift it to sauron at the tower, and get an achievement, Evil shall rule again! With it's icon as the eye of sauron, as any other race you
have to protect Sam and Frodo from any incoming orcs and i mean they will jump at you like mad, some armed, some biting your
arms off and some on Wargs (Giant Mud Tigers with the stink of fifty Orcs) protect them all up until mount doom, and they will
hurry inside and soon enough it will say in the chat, Good has won once again! And please can you make that the time when you
get telported back to the real minecraft world and get an achievement, We did it Mr. Frodo, with the rings as the Icon.
Good Luck with the mod!
Minecraft name: WhatDragon56, if you ever make a server with this mod i can help because all this is from the top of my head.
The mod will be out, just not yet. It takes time to complete a project of this size; however, since the poll suggests a lot of people would like a preview of the mod even though it's quite small at the moment. So I'm working on hobbit holes now, and after that I'm probably going to release a download of the mod in its current state.
I wouldn't make a texture pack, because I prefer to customise the game on a deeper level. But I'm sure there are some LOTR texture packs out there somewhere.
Just finished watching LotR and when you get teleported to the real world can it be that you have to travel to the rivendell biome (the elves home) a ship will be waiting for you and once you go a flash of light then, POOF your gone with the wind and you appear at your spawn point (or your bed if you slept in the real world)
This looks like such an awesome mod :3 do you think you could add hobbit doors? like doors that and the size of a double door and open as one and the texture is like a round door and around it is another texture so it looks like a round door? cause that would be awesome :3 also is it compatible with:
rei's minimap
mine little pony
voxel player
voxel flight
anti steve
mc patcher
and also, do you think you could add a thing where you choose if your a hobbit, dwarf, elf, wizard, etc. as well as choosing if your good or evil? cause it would be fun to be a hobbit and live in a hobbit hole also it would be cool, if you where like a say... hobbit, the hobbits would know you or something like that? (if it where compatible with mine little pony, choosing which race wouldn't affect your player, just how NPCs react to you) just some random ideas :3
p.s ive been looking like a mod for this ever since i went and saw "The Hobbit" and on one server i play on, i made a hobbit hole
p.s.s the mod looks so fun and i cant wait till i can download it
Making the hobbit doors shouldn't actually be that hard, just take some of the code from the normal doors and look at the code for villagers to see how they open doors and put that code into the hobbit code. And of course change the model and texture, but that's easy.
Making the door itself would be easy. But there are sections of the navigation code that are common to all mobs that reference the wooden doors and it would be impossible to change those without editing base classes. The AI system is indeed modular, but the villager door opening modules (which the hobbits also have) are just part of the story.
Hmm. What about making your own navigation code? Copy parts of the normal navigation code and make your own. I don't know how hard it would be, but I'm guessing fairly easy if you have good knowledge of Java, which you do.
