I'm using the current version. I do have quite a few mods... would ExtrabiomesXL or optifine affect anything? I tried it without the weather and tornadoes mod but I kept getting the same thing. And I think the bouncing is caused by the same thing that makes items bounce on stairs, but I'm not sure. Items bounce on all heights of snow besides vanilla snow blocks. Also, I'm pretty sure the snow in other biomes when It looks like its raining is because of each biome's temp. Idk how to check the temp but it changes the color of leaves and grass and causes it to snow at a certain temp.

I will look into it, thanks for reporting those bugs.
BetterSnow update for 1.6.1 is in progress! I have finished porting over BetterSnow to minecraft 1.6.1 vanilla, and I will update this forum with the download link soon. Currently know bug with this update: melting snow flattens completely, instead of shrinking by a single layer. I will be investigating this, along with some bugs with items. I have some bad news for the forge version of BetterSnow: Due to some kind of weird bug, it is now impossible to make a jar mod compatible with forge. BetterSnow is a jar mod. Attempting to install a forge-compatible jar mod will cause minecraft to crash, even if the mods are OK. If the bug is fixed I will update BetterSnowForge, but until then only the vanilla version will work.

It's the Forge team's attempt to prevent jar edits, probably for copyright and bug-reporting purposes. From 1.6 onward, if you want to include a mod which needs to alter base classes AND is compatible with Forge and other Forge mods, it needs to be written as a coremod for Forge. Supposedly they're working on making coremods much more robust in what they can change to compensate... But they still need to be written in ASM.
Keep your eye on mods which are currently coremods, like CodeChickenCore and NEI, to see what they do once they're updated.

Well any attempt to disable jar mods shouldn't be to hard to get around, considering the whole concept of a jar mod. I will look into it. But if it is too difficult, then I will take the route of dropping forge compatibility. I hate to do it, but forge brought it on themselves and I am not interested in porting BetterSnow to a new API at the moment. And currently TMI, WMLL, and Optifine are leaning the same way. On a side note, I am suspicious of forge wanting to disable jar mods at. I wonder if it is in response to the complaints of server owners about jar mods that prevent the forge client from reporting installed hacks to the server. Forge mods and coremods cannot disable this functionality. But whatever. I stopped liking forge a while ago, anyway.
A "B" update for BetterSnow 1.6.1 has been released, with a lot of bug fixes and a few new features! It can be downloaded here. Unfortunately this version is still vanilla-only, but I am looking into the issue with forge. Starting in this update, I will be keeping a changelog of all changes to bettersnow! It can be found by going here. More good news: I have found a solution to the items bouncing on snow blocks! The only issue is I have to modify either Entity.class or EntityItem.class, both of which are very important classes that a lot of mods modify. But I know how to fix it, at least.
On a completely different note, does anyone else have trouble with the backspace and delete keys with the post and comment editor on the MC Forums?
I just wanted to reply that in an older version of Minecraft (1.5.2). There is a problem with the GUI. The problem is that the setting to change the height of the snow is locked on one specific height. So snow does not naturally get any bigger than the generic Minecraft snow.

I know, the number buttons are broken which are why they are disabled in the newer ones. The button that says the max height is one is wrong, the game is set up to ignore it's value since 1.5.2. If snow is actually not growing, you can manually change that value in the file SnowSettings.properties. The 2 biggest things I am working on for bettersnow are fixing the items bouncing and to fix those buttons. They were really cool, but they always made the GUIs glitch up.
BetterSnow 1.6.1 has been updated again! This one adds new number-based options, such as specifying the chance of snow melting per-tick, and mostly fixes the longtime bug with items bouncing on snow! Items now sink into snow much like carpet, and there are only rare edge cases where they do any form of glitching! The changelog has been updated and the download link has been added to the OP!
BetterSnow 1.6.2 has been released! This version is still missing forge, although I hope to get it updated as soon as MCP for forge starts actually decompiling the game right... Anyway the changelog has been updated and the download link will be on the OP soon!
I'm working on it. Forge seems to have decided that jar modding is quote, "unacceptable" and has added code to detect and block jar mods, so I am having to re-write bettersnow as an actual forge mod. Which sucks because as much as people like to say forge's API can do anything, I'm really only using ASM which is basically exactly what I was doing before, only in a more complicated way. But I may be able to get it to work this way and even if not I will just write a mod that disables the JAR checking.
BetterSnow forge 1.6.2 Is almost done! Sorry about the ridiculous wait, forge disabled the method I was using to make BetterSnow-Forge mergers and so I have had to rewrite the entire mod as an actual forge mod. On the plus side, the forge version no longer requires JAR editing! You can just plop the .zip down into your mods folder and it will run fine! I am almost ready to release a pre-release version, just as soon as I make sure the ASM code works outside of MCP.

Stupid question: Wasn't 1.5 supposed to support multiple snow heights out of the box? Or did they just finish implementing them but they are still not used by the vanilla game?

1.5 added support for 8 snow levels, but the player stands on top of them and they do not stack up automatically. They said it would cause too much lag, but that is clearly not happening here.
I think I'm going to need to get someone more experienced with forge modding to help. Although I did discover a way to return to the old forge jar modding that I used to do, although it automatically makes it harder to install due to forge's default behavior of blocking jar mods. I think for now I will try to port to a forge jar mod again, and just post install instructions for the more complicated steps.
EDIT: JAR version is done, I just need to put together the install instructions. It's much more complicated to install now, due to forge's "If forge can run without modding base classes, any mod can". Sure they can. If they spend 2 years developing with a full forge-sized team.
