This is a very simple mod to replace a broken tool with a new one from your inventory. I got tired of having to manually move picks around every time one broke during an extended mining operation. I saw there's a mod out there to completely automate tool selection, but that seemed like going a little too far to me, Hence, this mod (my first fit for public consumption).
This mod requires Minecraft Forge. Just put the zip into your mods directory.
Place extra tools immediately above the appropriate slot in your action bar. When the tool you're using breaks, the tool immediately above it will move down into your action bar. Replacement tools must be the same type and material as the broken tool, e.g. an iron shovel will not replace a broken wooden shovel. You can stack up to three extras above each slot. Any non-matching item will prevent matching tools above it from "falling" down into your action bar.
Let me know if you find this mod useful. I may add additional functionality; feel free to make requests.
Uh oh, my trusty wooden hatchet is about to break...
... *CRACK* but like magic...
...an even trustier wooden hatchet falls into my hand!
I will try this out. This is a client side only mod or should I put it on the server as well?
I will be totally honest with you... I don't know. It modifies the player inventory, and I have no idea what happens when the server and the client disagree. I've never actually played on a server...
