Well As long as they go to 1.7.10 before they go to 1.8... Cause 1.7.10 is my favorite version for modding at the moment as theres a good amount of mods... (don't skip 1.7.10) Reason im saying that is ive seen the odd mod do that.
Also does that mean if someone made a "Port" or whatever they call em, for Traincraft on 1.7.10 does that mean they can release it? (I'm not a mod maker so I don't know much about this sort of thing).
Version probably depends on the code being contributed. 1.7.10 is probably the most likely to see anything in the immediate future being that it's easier to satisfy dependencies, but builds for 1.7.10 and 1.8.x could be done at the same time. It's really hard to predict how much useful code will be contributed, butI don't think people are really that familiar with 1.8.x yet.
As far as ports go, depends on the licence. Mods like Modular Powersuits, Big Reactors, and Archimedes' Ships have had ports by others when the mod author went inactive because the licence allowed it. Other mods like Railcraft have a more strict licence. As long as there is someone available to review and accept PR's (Pull Requests), the license that Railcraft has is adequate. However, if there's no one available for weeks or months, then you run the risk of having critical bugs out in the wild and people just losing interest.
Oh ok then, that makes a 1.7.10 look more probable.
Most good mods the DEVs are afraid to make OpenSource ,and I don't know why ;because that is only a good thing . The DEVS that don't want a OpenSource mod are the ones that would rather see there mod just DIE like this one . Used to be one of the best and only train mods for MC ,but now its just a dream and dead . I Actually have a working Port of the 1.6.4 version for 1.7.10 that I decompiled ,and worked on for nearly 4 months str8 ,and it is working beautifully ,but the sad thing is I can not give it to anyone ,and it is sicking that I caint ,and to be frank thats very sad I am sorry guys your only option is to do this yourself or dream big and wait on a update if it is to ever come . Was a nice mod ,and in fact its dead to most but the sprite lives on with me .
Hey since its open source you maybe able to give it out,
Slightly off topic at the moment, but I'm sure some of you heard about the traincraft dispatching ATCS/CTC board I've been building. Here's an update with pictures:
Well, here's my thought s on this, and I have to agree, this is a great mod thatMr.Brutal made, in fact I like it a lot, I'd rather just revert back to 1.6.4 rather than going forward (it's the only option at this point.
BUt then I have to say that some Devs are extremely afraid and for good reason. After all someomne could come along and actually be able to debug the code, and improve on that. And that's what scares them. The issue here is the Original owners ideas vs a new player who can decompile and recompile it where it makes it work better for a later update.. But then if you look at Mr.Brutals posts there hardly has been one new post form this guy in like what? 2 years or 3? I mean the last post that was heard from was Early 2015, and in fact this project has been on hold for over 3 years.. And that's a sad commentary.. 3 years without a single update, or anything to show for it.
Does this mean the dev is lazy? No, it just means he's busy..
But what has me scratching my head is the fact that all Devs should have a contingency plan to actually keep the project moving forward even if it means handing it off to someone else (Some modders over at KSP do tis and some do not.. Why the ones do not are a mystery as they probably are scared that someone might come out with a newer version of a Mod and call it there onwn..
And I can see where this issue of Open Source comes from and the fear that some people have about letting others take a look at the work..
But then why can't we have someoen do their own recode? Or come up withan idea to figure out what to do? After all there wwas a lot of good going into this mo, and suddenly because of the fear that the game (which was bought out by Microssoft) would change the rules..
But then Let's look at this from the Microsoft angle and I'd like to point out one thing.. and this goes back when Microsoft had their own Game Studio (ACES Games) andthey released 10 of the bbest games in the world.. That being Flight Simulator.. Microsoft enocouraged players to do develop their own aircraft, therre own airports,Their own scenery to make the game more realistic, and in a way they did so by means of a format called "Software Development Kits" or SDK's..
In the SDK the actual software designer (Microsoft in this case Allowed Players to do just that, and in fact some rather powerful tools came out, and as time went on , People did develop their own aircraft and airports and scenery. and in fact the enviroment got better and betterl. Some folks went on to improve weather features and effects and so much stuff that the sim aviation community literally exploded into what it is today.. with tens of thusands of aircraft and thousans of airports and at least two or 3 dozen realistic sceneraist..
So I don't know why the developers are afraid of open source.. Microsoft, the very entity of this game should be pressured into releasing an SSDK, or maybe we should pressure the mod maker to develop one, or maybe we all should just sit down and try to figure out what to do..(After all sure you've open sourced the code and fixed a lot of the problem and sure it's mrbrutal's code, but this could be an example where a dev could give us a SDK at least in order to understand the idea of what is going on..
But as you pointed out, the devs are scared.. They think that they're going to get ripped off, but in this case, the only other option than to abandon a project is really 3 options..
1. Let it die, which it did (and then let someone develop a new mod that is based on the old (with none of the code).
2. Allow someone else to take over the project and keep it updated (KSP Does this sometimes and in fact a few people who gave up on their projects aren't regretting it, as they now are seeing that the fruits of their labor are leaving the players a lot happier..)
3. Let a new Modder take over, and then release an SDK so that others could learn and develop their own works..
Of these three, I feel in this case Option 3 ifs the best option.. Let the old program die, hae someone new and fresh come in, and develop a whole new idea.. and then release their open source code in the form of a Software developers kit to allow others to understand and improve on the product..
In short, Option 3, would be wise as it gets folks to communicate and ask questions and even come up with easier to use tools so that everyone can enjoy this mod and improve on it..
So, best option? Talk to MrButal. Point him to this and suggest the SDK idea.. after all I think this project shouldn't die.. It's too good of a mod and actually can make this game better..(
But until Dev Modders can get off their "High Horse" and get down to the basics then maybe it's going to stay this way.. A dead horse, so then. why not come out and do Option 2. Deveelop some new source coding.. (which will be hard to do so again this falls back to the SDK..
In short , If anyone wants proof go to either Kerbal space program, or any of the Aviation sim sites (Sites like Avsim.com). Even though Microsoft has stopped developing the actual product, the fans are taking the latest product and still improving on it with new ideas.. (and yes Microsoft did run aTrain Simulator too. and they wer egoing to improve on it when Microsoft pulled the plug on that project.. A new agency (Kuju) tood the idea aand ran with it, and now we got Train Simulator 2016 (The Latest Incarnation..)
(Sure the DLC isn't free, but then there's areason for this..and that is to help keep any project alive, you need money.. and that's to pay the progammers and deves who came out with this...
The end of this story is simple.. and those 3 options are best.. though if I had to take any choice, I'd take the SDK route.. (or the open source route..
In the end, maybe somene will realize this, someone might be right now reading this post (once it is up ) and think to themselves about the SDK idea..
In the end the SDK route is the best idea.. Defvelop a kit that players can use to code and program and to make work with other modes.. Should be simple ehough to do.. After all we do have smart codeers otu there, and if the devs are going to abandon their projects they should at least leave an SDK for others to improve upon..
That about sums it up.. Develop a coding SDK and release it, and then let others run with it.. (after all if someo of these coders sat down and did this they could actually make a far better Traincraft than what itis now.
There's already an SDK, it's called Forge. Forge is built on top of MCP (Minecraft Coders Pack), which is created from reverse engineering Minecraft, the result of which is to allow a common framework for mods. Creating an SDK for a mod itself is not only redundant, it's pointless. Minecraft breaks MCP with every update, so MCP has to update with every version, and with that Forge. So releasing an SDK for a certain version of the mod for a certain version of forge, it would break with every update and would require a complete rewrite of the SDK and everything built on top of it. All of that is more work than just updating the mod in the first place.
There is a project called Nova which is supposed to allow mods to work across several versions of Minecraft without the mod author having to update their own code (if they use the Nova API). However, like many of other of Calclavia's projects, it has gone months without an update.
ALright, granted that Neither has updated their projects in moths, and in fact I think in the case of Mr.Brutal , the issue was really a two or rather a three fold issue.. First off, we had "Notch"selling out to Microsofft with the Guareantee that this game wouldn't be changed..
But second (and this is where the trouble begins , is that with that announcement, everyone panicked.. and the end result is that a lot of folks just rolled over and played dead or just quit..(That right there is a sad commentary..)
And one of those two that did quit was of course "Spitfire" who thought the game would go no where or that t Microsoft would not allow players to do mods, and hence, he left, in a fit of disgust, and anger that someone had betwrayed him all fo rthe sake of moneky (Namely Notch and the Mojang Gang),
This left Mr Brutal with a highly impossible task, and that was of course to run the entire program himself..
Which then brng s up the next point, and that is he didn't want anyone to take over incase he got incapacitated, or sick or died.. (And that right there shows the human nature of possessiveness, which is in fact the wrong approach to take when developing a mod..
And while we have this SDK, it's amazing that no one has really sat down and got a bunch of people together to develop their own version of traincraft (Again this is due to the Possessiveness of the author..
(Am I getting somewhere with this? of course i am..)
The Problem is, that while some people can carry on a project some of them can not, and so sometimes it is best for an author to get into contact with someone , (Anyone who loves the mod that is) to help and take over or reduce the burden of all the coding and testing.. and I think that's the issue here..
Sure he's got a patreon site, but money isn't going to fix the problem.. Actually in this case Love and care will.. If you look over the entire thread (all 153 pages of it), players in this thread have been helpful insightfful and in some cases been offering to help him out, and in the end, it's no thte players who would have killed the project, but insted the deeloper himself.
The thing is, People want Traincraft, in a way it's part of the whole Minecraft idealism ehre. Sure some folks think that Trainncraft doesn't belong in what some call "A gantasy realm" but then I'm a bit of a realist..If we remove the "Fantasy part" of the game and look at it, in a way Traincraft (and Railcraft should be merged into one large core unit, where each will work with the other or it will be one solid idea.. (After all this is how Railraods get built.. and it takes a lot of planning to do so..
The bottom line I feel is this, I think what we have is a developer who doesn't want to carry on with this project.. So my suggestion is.. Why not let someone start over and evelop it again and use none of hte coding or develo their own unique ideas about Traincraft/Railcraft..
But then there's another flip side to that and that discourages the developer from progressing further and that he's not afraid that the product isn't good, rather he's scared that someone will come along and make a Better product than his.. and that's what scares them.. that's why Developpers become this way..
Now I do developing in a game or rather a program myself (it's a dance program that is very popular and has been around for at least a decade..) and yet I see one developer who is working on trying to take the original idea and improve on that, and in a way he's succeed, even when the doriginal developer hasn't done an upgrade or an idea to upgrade the old system in motnhs.. (Sure the new system has bugs, but this develoer is listening to his users and is improving the product.. ) and in the end, this guy is slowly winning over the programmers who want to make things easier..
In short, I think Traincraft is indeed a dead horse like that Dance engine that has been around for a decade.. so why not get someone who will be willing and who will be able to build a product that is as good as the original creator designed.. (But then it comes down to the Legality of coding, after all MrBrutal could claim that the code is his and that someone is just using HIS code3 to develop THEIR product.. and thus he could easily quit and the product never gets developed..whish is a sad fate..
In a way that's a selfish ego.. If I have an idea and I put it outthere, and Try to program or write a bit of data that might improve something like a dance or game idea, then I put it outthere. If I find a bug in a game I report it, and in fact this is something that the dev hasn't considered.. Some of us give feedback on the product or having others help make the coiding work, . Heck Go look over at Kerbal space program.. Some of these guys are asking for help and they are getting it.. (One of my favorite mods in that game is in fact broken at the moment, and the mod is trying to fix it, yet thanks to a bunch of people who can program, the product is getting fixed and will probably be updated.. After all this is a core mod that helps another mod make the game come more alive..
The end of thisstory is that if Mr. Brutal doesn't wwant to share the code or make an open source offering to those of us who want to help then the project is indeed DEAD.. and I mean it seriously..
If he's just scare that someone will develop a better product or mod than him, he shouldn't be jealous, he should encourage others to help him(or her), andin the end, when all is said and done, the game gets a bit better.. and players enjoy the end results.. After all no one is making money off of this, this is a Mod, and sure the flight simulator had this issue where some people demanded payment for their hard time and effort.. to develop a flight sim model (Like an aircraft), but the thing is even by paying for it, it still helps the developer make the game better..
So what does this mean? Should a new Player just start with new ideas and codes, and study ideas that other devs have and come up with their own unique coding? I mean where this is right now, the project is dead, the thread at this point should be closed and really no further discussion should be one.. After all we're wasting out breath here. If Mr Brutal would respond to this comment i just to put the mind at ease for the rest of us, or to give ourselfves options as to what to do with Traincraft..
Traincraft (along with Buildcraft and other mods help make the world of Minecraft come alive even though the players say it's a fantasy setting. why this isn't. It's an open "Sandbox" developement and when you have this kind of development the question is, should I ask for feedback, should I ask for help? Do I want my code used in a better product, the list of problems just go on and on..
The end result is this.. thehere should be a way for someone to talk to MrBrutal, and to tell him that his mod is important, that it's part of the minecraft idealism of being a sandbox game.. But I think like I said, the fear of being hurt, ripped off or shown up is there.. It's all about Ego.. and let's put it this way, I'mn not strokeing or hurting anyone's ego by stating fact..
If the player wants to do it, then do it, don't wsay you will and then won't.. if you're not be kind enough to tell us why and then maybe opt for options of handing the project off to someone who might improve on it (But still they'd have to credit the guy who developed it (Many KSP mod makers do this.. or they can do what and where this is going to and that is the glue facotrry..
In short, I'd like to see some responses here on what this mod means and what it can do to imrpove the sanebox idealisms of Minecraft.. Heck I build railraods on a daily basis in Minecraft and In fact I wouldn't mind seeing others worktogethr and finsih a sream, of a wonderful idea.. but hey if the dev doesn't want us to, then cloe the thread.. and let the matter drop..
That's all I'm going to say here, ..
Oh and one thing.. Merry Christmas.
Tucsoncoyote
(And no I'm nto trying to be a grinch here either.. after all it's the proicple of the many outweight the few of the one..)
Actually, Mr Brutal announced that he will release the source, probably on Github. He hasn't really hinted much on what the licencing will be though. I know, until we actually see it, not much has changed, so until that happens it should be considered dead. Sadly, it's been almost a year and a half since the last build, yet there are people still posting bugs on Traincraft's project site on Bitbucket and people still giving money through patron. All that said, I believe if and when the code is posted, you will see some activity, probably a bit chaotic for a month and then stabilize after that.
Actually all you have to do is to d/l the mod and you have the source code. You just the proper program to read the .jar file. 7-Zip works nicely.
Someone is working on a port yes but it's better to wait till the official source is filled by MrBrutall.
I hope the modders will help eachother. I think there is no sense for multiple ports of Traincraft. Focus should be still on rewrite the whole mod like MrBrutall started it.
@ all those kids out there:
Wait till Traincraft is in a _GOOD_ state to play with it on 1.7.10/1.8 - don't blame the new modders to publish a version as soon as possible.
-SNIP- 2) Do you really think there can be a single official version of Traincraft given Mr Brutal's level of activity since the last release? Collaboration requires participation. At the very least someone has to be around to accept "pull requests" (code submissions from others). Someone has to be around to address bugs. There are still outstanding bugs from the last release that have not been addressed and people are still submitting bug reports.
-SNIP-
That what I told MrBrutall some time ago. He need some Co-Dev with him that can handle all those things other Mod-developers have some co-devs too.
Thats the only way MrBrutall can get back in developement some time
I also talked with canitzp (who started the rewrite) and we'll see what we can do with it.
Well, sort of. Think less co-dev and more lead-dev, someone with commit level access to run the project between guest appearances. As far as MrBrutal getting back into development, I don't see it happening unless the reasons why he hasn't so far change. That is the brutal reality of things.
From the Github:
Building
Traincraft will follow standard Forge conventions for setting up and building a project, with a couple additional details (details to come).
There will also be a jenkins build engine available for setting things up, and building releases quicker (details to come).
Would y'all chill out about 1.7.10+ versions? Sure, it's okay to be excited. But it wasn't long ago that it was announced that TC would be going open source. This stuff takes time. Don't believe me? Try doing advanced modding yourself and you will be humbled.
Just like when PC"s were being Developed, some of the Electronic Enginners asked for what are called "Standards.. (That way there would be no incompatibilites with other PC's.. (in short.. Standardize everythign and eveyrone is happy..
So then, when the code is realzsed the thing is that we will want some standardization, and in fact one of the standardizations here is the ability to use Traincraft (Especially the Track/Switches0 to be compatible with say Railcraft.. In the 1.6.4 version there was that wonderful track we could use (and the switches to go with it, but at the time the Switches were not compatible with say the Railcraft Levers, and switch motors and even the routing motors.. These are perhaps the first thing to be standardized.. After all I bet everyone hates to have to stop their trian, run to a level flick the switch, and then get bakck in and continue on.. I mean the Rail Craft system is good, but Traincraft I feel was designed for use with Railcraft in a seamless way... that way, you can have the most enjoyment first..
So perhaps that is where we need to start.. Standardizing the work to work seamlessly in Railcraft (and vidce versa..)
After that, I would say that Track itself could be reworked (and yes there are a lot of interesting pieces that could be created, (and in fact i don't see why a lot of the rail craft ideas (such as Control tracks, Coupling tracks and even holding tracks Could not be incorportated into the code..Heck Like I said, Make it so that both mods can seamless ley work together..(and yes tis might be a bit of a re-write, but in the end, this "Standardization" might be the ting that makes everyone realize how important this mod is for us Minecrafter swho want to build railroads.. Just a thought

Brutal stated before the the 1.6.4 code was "all over the place" and needed to be "cleaned" up. So how about we start there first? If the code is all over the place it will be that much difficult to get it to 1.7.10
But if it's being re-written from scratch it's a different story.

^ THANK you.
Seriously. Calm down. Not to sound like a broken record, but as MrBrutal said, the code is quite janky and could do with a rewrite, which takes a large amount of work .All of you people out there, please don't just add more posts saying "ERMAGURD WHERZ 1.7.10". That contributes nothing to the discussion AND we wont get posts like this one.
Grow up and have patience, guys. It'll be here eventually.
(sorry if this is offensive/ repetitive or whatever someone needed to rant ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

I'd be happy to offer up my assistance.
Figured it was time for a change.

(And no I'm nto trying to be a grinch here either.. after all it's the proicple of the many outweight the few of the one..)
From the Github:
OMG GOO 1.7.10 ♥

> Animania ♡
Where is 1.7.10? I don't get how to make it works from the Github.
Happy-happy new year!
Would y'all chill out about 1.7.10+ versions? Sure, it's okay to be excited. But it wasn't long ago that it was announced that TC would be going open source. This stuff takes time. Don't believe me? Try doing advanced modding yourself and you will be humbled.
Figured it was time for a change.
Well again here's my thought on tis..

Any way you look at it, it will take time.
10 points if you know who ⬇️ is.
It would be nice more mod interaction between TC and Railcraft (TC tracks compatible with RC carts), though. But seen as a mid-term goal.
