actually, that somewhat reminds me of the issues i had with permgen, try adding these two arguments and see if it still does that.
-XX:PermSize=256m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m
i'd recommend try both with 256m if it has problems with 512m but i don't think my settings are that extreme, depends on your computer though so try it both ways.

i keep making the same mistake, i think "oh, i've given them a few months, surely it'll be fixed by now" THAT is why i seem to ALWAYS be angry to some of you, my advice is to get the lead out.
there were nice things here, until the mod author threw a tantrum.

you dont need -XX:PermSize=256m and -XX:MaxPermSize=512m is far to much, 256 is far more then you wil ever need (most likely) but it might fix crashes thats true, but it does mostly just fix crashes if you have about 100+ mods

148 at the moment and those arguments are literally needed to even launch MC, spent a good few days at the least with SFplayer (from ic2) tracking it down.
sorry but i know what i'm talking about and he never gave any indication how many mods he was using.

So I know that in 3.1 we're getting updated golem AI and the golem-herding-bell-thingy, but are we getting anything else? The Golems look like they're gonna be awesome but I was wondering if there was anything else I should be excited for.

The new node-seeing, aspect-reading Thaumometer and the exploration-based research system to support it, item hatches (items get smelted, golems don't!), the return of taint (bigger, better, and biome-er than ever), a system for building wands and using foci to create the effects rather than having individual wands for each purpose, as well as a system of drawing essentia from nodes manually to power your wands, the Primal Aspects, nodes visible (if faintly) without Goggles of Revealing, and possibly a magical camera, upgrades to the Crucible, and the secretive, shadowy Thaumatorium.
So yeah, there's quite a lot you should be excited for!
EDIT: Oh, yeah, and stacks of paper dynamically render on your research desk depending on how much you have in the desk at the time. Can't forget that. Also, the "faint" and "shining" descriptors for nodes, elemental alignment and capacity in those nodes, and what may possibly be dynamically-customized golems with materials forming a "tier" system, rather than dictating their function from the get-go. Also, the Goggles will probably show the setting of Arcane Ears and note blocks, among others. As of writing this I've already edited the post twice to add more.
On the topic of Note Blocks and Arcane Ears, I have an idea for a way to read the settings that would probably function in most situations. Perhaps the Goggles could reveal a small box, like the Pickaxe of the Core or looking at a filled Warded Jar? This box, whether always visible or appearing when either device is 'tuned', would have:
An icon for the "instrument", depending on the block type the device is on (wood plays bass, dirt plays piano, therefore display them correspondingly
A different color for the icon, depending on the note the block is tuned to, and/or a musical notation (C#) in the corner of the icon (much like how aspects displayed in items had their numbers) in case of colorblindness
This would allow a player to see in a second or less what "instrument" the Note Block or Arcane Ear is set to (so that it doesn't have to be picked up to see the block underneath or whether the other will recognize it) and what specific note it's set to (so that you don't have to worry AS much about setting each block repeatedly to check, then overshooting and having to loop around again).
1) Nightengale
- a magical, artificial bird that works as a kind of fusion between a note block and arcane pressure plate. The idea is that it you can tell it to play a seqence of notes, say a maximum of four or eight notes, and give it perameters on when to sing. Like an arcane pressure plate, it could play for everyone that it detects, for you only, or for everyone but you. You could create choruses of thuamic-clockwork birds to sing for you every time you came home, or could use them to interact with arcane ears and create complex redstone fun, or songs that trigger a bunch of traps for invaders.
Dunno if Azanor would be interested in making something like this but I just thought I'd bring it up as I really like the idea.

How did I miss all that while trawling the last 50 pages? I think my face may have just exploded. I love the idea of having a crowded desk in my (already) cramped research room. Its the little things that you remember.
Uh, guys, it's a little confusing if you post stuff about 3.1 in here. There is an official thread for it after all. Could please post all these crazy questions there?

The best explorer in all of Minecraftia and an amateur thaumaturge at your service.

I personally find it justifiable since the 3.1 thread is mostly for brainstorming, whereas I'm (mostly) mentioning confirmed content or ideas pertinent to previous discussions. Azanor posts his teasers here, for another thing. I don't browse the 3.1 thread often, so he could cross-post them, but I'm not yet sure.
EDIT: Also, all they do on the 3.1 thread is theorize about spellcasting, which Azanor has explicitly said he's not doing, in favor of the wand system. When they're not thinking of incredibly intricate and thematically unfitting things, they're dreaming up things Vazkii himself already has planned to implement, namely an aspect-mixing, gauntlet-based system. I'm doubtful whether Azanor still looks to that thread for ideas, but he might.
On the subject of improvements for the Arcane Ear, I'd like to bring up an old suggestion by pectus_umbra.

If Azanor doesn't do it, I promise I will stalk Vazkii until the Interpol arrests me or he implements it. Else I'll do it myself. That's a great, great idea.

Could you please give us your error log, within spoiler tags? That way we can figure out exactly what went wrong.
Just remembered leyline ideas and thaumic teleportation theories... Good times...

What makes you think I was ever being reasonable? I'm sitting here with a pile of guns while wearing a flamethrower, and you thought that, at some point, I was being reasonable?
Azanor, one request for 3.1. Do not make a mouse wheel a requirement. At least allow a keyboard command or something to change settings. I'm disabled and unable to use a normal mouse and so have to use a modified trackball. Thanks
