also, if the beta already hit forgecraft, does anyone know some good streams that are currently running? we may be able to see it in action.
Soaryn and Myrathi are the only ones I know are streaming regurly from FC2 atm. If they aren't streaming it, don't hound them to do so - just check back in an hour or so if you don't like what is streaming.
Soaryn's stream will contain DW20 spoilers.
I like the way the new research looks - much more interesting than before, though I personally will miss the old item sink nature.. it was good to have something to create farm/mobtrap goals for. But, judging from the stream I saw, the "rune-connect'em" part of research is pretty confusing. I didn't get the "one-way flow" part of it at all until Azanor himself described it.
It seems like it would be way more intuitive if the connecting line segments were rendered showing the direction of the flow, whether that was with pulses travelling along the line bits or just by having the whole line consist of little arrows or whatever, instead of a solid line. This would make it much easier to see where your connections were going wrong, and really, it wouldnt even have to be animated to show some indication. A small arrow at the start of each origin point would serve the purpose quite well.
im still not quite happy with the idea of research points though. it would have been a little more fun, if jars and phials of essentia (or vis) still existed. and instead of collecting research points, you collect phials of primordial aspects and combine them on the research table to phials of new aspects, and use those in your research.
the doodle god mechanic would still be the same. though the collection process would probably somehow work slightly different.
after seing soaryns stream, the interface for the research table could be larger, so more aspects fit into the window on the left. like one or two more rows would be nice.
Bringing the taint back... hm, that was a known cause of server lag. Hopefully he'll make it better this time around and less laggy.
Uhhh... not to rain on your parade or anything, but how was the taint a known cause of server lag? The last time taint was a part of Thaumcraft was back in version 2 (MC 1.2.5) and it was SSP only then. Unless you mean the Aura nodes, but they were never a hassle for any server I was on...

And by the way; Who is John Galt?
azanor in thaumcraft 4 will the wand have a config option to have a HD modell? i saw the wand in soaryens stream and i liked the modell of the wand, but for people using HD texturepacks (i use 128-512) a more HD version would be nice.
also: THANK YOU for your hard work!
Azanor, I know I'm not the mod maker here, but I think you should add the method that villagers use of ''if another player is already trading you can't use the trading interface'' to the research table.

yeah, the only hassle I had with the aura nodes was the wisps getting out of control once in a while.
all I had to do was go visit the age once a week or so to give the turrets a chance to work. (whole area chunkloaded and still the portal gun turrets wouldn't fire...)

That would be good for preventing others from messing with research while you are doing it, but I'd like to see it be optional if that is possible. The ability to see and interact with others' research could actually add a more cooperative element to thaumcraft. I know I'd like to be able to help my friend's research by filling in a missing concept or two or point out how to solve a particular puzzle. Azanor could limit how much we could contribute to other people's research or how it would work, like a special "cooperative research mode" that both participants get the research but only if they have the prerequisite research to unlock it.
i came up with a slight alteration for the research system. it doesnt change the core principles, but would make the research a little more immersive.
the idea is to add a small intermediate step to get rid of research points, in favour of experimenting with the aspects themselves.
research points are a rather abstract concept. while experimenting with phials of aspects and mixing them together gives more of the feeling of performing actual alchemy in your research.
step 1 - the thaumometer:
same principle as youre currently using.
- scanning objects with the thaumometer reveals aspects contained in items and blocks (including aura nodes). objects, that contain complex aspects, you dont have discovered yet, cant be analyzed.
- analyzed objects are researched, and display their aspects by holding shift, when hovering over them with the cursor in the inventory.
- analyzing objects with paper and scribing tool in the inventory gives a chance for extra research notes (instead of the research itself, it would give hints for how to research certain items. like, analyzing a torch might be the moment, when the character comes up with the idea of nitor, and the notes include hints as to what aspects might be required to make the discovery. similar to the thaumcraft 3 research descriptions)
step 2 - aspect extraction and research:
still using the doodle god mechanic. the same as before, with one added step.
- now that you have analyzed some of the blocks and items, and know what aspects they contain, you can throw these items into the crucible, to dissolve them and collect their aspects in phials. (maybe with an alembic, or by just throwing empty phials into a crucible with aspects inside).
- throwing items in there, that havent been scanned and unknown aspects on them, just makes a mess.
- you can also use the wand on the crucible, to drain the primal aspects inside, and store them in the wand, like you can on the aura nodes. (for example throwing coal into the crucible, would allow to charge the wand with the fire aspect inside).
- you can also extract primal aspects directly, that are stored in your wand and fill them into empty phials at the enchanting table.
- you take those phials of aspects to the research desk and combine them with the doodle god mechanic to phials of new, combined aspects.
you can also use phials of aspects later on, in your crafting with the crucible.
step 3 - item research/discoveries.
same as before. only, that youre using the aspects, instead of research points to lock and unlock the runes.
as a bonus, the research table would be additionally covered in phials with colored liquids in them.
I would love to see this mod updated to work in conjunction with the newest minecraft version. Also, I agree with some of the above mentioned ideas. I loved TC2, and TC3 was all kinds of fun, I do look forward to an Update to version 1.6.2 or TC4.
Also, I'd like to see the return of the portals, sigils, and symbols; or some updated version of them.
Not sure if it was already asked but the "research points" will be stored in the thaumometer or by player... cause it would be nice to make some sort of trade system with them don't you think?
i have a bit of an idea about how to hint for research. if you need to combine aspects to finish the current research, have a tiny bit of tinting along the top border of one, and the bottom border of the other. it would only hint one pair at a time. if you have the aspect you need to research, have the tinting all along the outside. the tinting wouldn't show at all at first, but over a period of time, it would become slightly visible. possibly have an option to disable/enable/change this in the config.

I'm sure Azanor would at least change the title to indicate that TC4 is released.

So it doesn't spread? In "The Return" it spreads, unless he later stated other wise.

well, according to drow, its not spreading by default, which makes sense. but there might still be a config option for that.

Taint was never a cause of server lag since TC2 wasn't multiplayer
But yes, it did cause a little lag in singleplayer, but mostly due to particles.
Taint now uses very similar code to how grass spreads and thus should only cause a slightly higher load on the server than grass would.
Taint spread is ON by default, but you can set a bunch of parameters regarding that in the config.
