Hate to necro this just to ask, but have you considered talking to Bioxx to add your mod to TFC? It fits wonderfully with his aesthetic, and not so well with vanilla Minecraft's.

I gave a longer reply the first time, but edited it. I started by proposing features for Metallurgy, then TFC, then Advanced Cooking. In the TFC suggestions forum, several people liked my ideas, but a TFC developer called "dunkleosteus" dismissed my ideas. He said if mithril appears at all it'll be a fantasy metal. I never communicated with Bioxx directly, but since the only developer to respond dismissed it, I decided to write it myself. Several fans of Metallurgy like my ideas, but the developer for Metallurgy dismissed my ideas too, then several of his fans said I should go to TFC, which has the realism and detail I was looking for. The developer for Advanced Cooking liked my ideas (finally some acceptance), but he closed his website when he went back to school last September. So I'm writing my suggestions for that too. If you can convince Bioxx to let me work on TFC, I would be happy to do so.
Right now a couple of my friends are trying to convince me to port my mods to Bukkit. I intend to get all main features working on Forge first.
Now with distillery. You can distil beer, ale, or stout to make Whiskey. Distil Scotch beer (heather ale) to make Scotch whiskey, commonly known as Scotch. Distil wine to make brandy.
A full batch of wine becomes 16 bottles of brandy. This represents a beer bottle size, which is a standard potion bottle. This is a half-bottle or "mickey" bottle of brandy. A full batch of beer, ale, or stout becomes 8 bottles of whiskey. This is because beer has half the alcohol content of wine, but whiskey has the same alcohol content as brandy. Scotch beer also becomes 8 bottles of Scotch.
Introduced with this update is "mash". In the brew pot, instead of hops, dandelion or heather, place 24 malted grain. Since it takes 24 malted grain to make wort, this gives mash twice the sugar. That will ferment to the same alcohol content as wine. It can't be bottled, only transferred to a distillery. Once distilled, mash produces 16 bottles of whiskey.
A distillery has 2 parts: bottom and top. The bottom looks similar to a brew pot, but the top is not open. The top unit represents the top of a copper pot still. However, since vanilla Minecraft doesn't have copper, and none of my mods do either, the recipe uses iron ingots.
Recipe for a distillery bottom:
Both Mithril and Booze updated for Minecraft 1.5.1
However Mithril appears to have an issue. Once you install the modified base class for gas flow, it causes Minecraft to hang as soon as you log in. Without that file installed, Minecraft will crash as soon as a furnace starts to smelt an ore that spews gas. This modified base class is installed in the client only, not a server. But still, it's a real issue. I mention it here because the mod for Minecraft 1.5 has the same problem. Therefor mods for Minecraft 1.4.7 are available.

I have tried installing this mod before, I love the attention to history and realism you you have.
Reading the postings, I am confused: Did you update the install-method to be "just drop the zip to the mods-folder"? (Or was this only for use on a server?)
The install is a bit involved, and mithril is breaking my game again. I keep sucking up. Sorry. I do have an idea though, of making it less involved:
Either: do as the "jar-mods" do and present a zip file with complete paths and files to be dropped into the jar-file (by MCPatcher or Magic Launcher or the like).
Or: make them fool-proof enough for me to use by applying the "drop zip in mods"-approach. (It might be about armor, yes, but others make it work somehow. eg: thaumcraft, forestry).
I am an economist and a geographer, not a coder, so I cannot make a better suggestion really.
I found a way to use Forge features so you no longer have to replace any Minecraft classes. That means when installing on a Forge server, just copy the mithril.zip file to the "mods" folder, and restart your server. That's it, no messing around. If you want, on a server you can rename mithril.zip to mithril.jar, it'll work exactly the same. Unfortunately for the client you still have to manually copy texture files into minecraft.jar. At least you don't have to copy any class files.
Minecraft 1.5 changed how textures work. Instead of one single large file for terrain, a second for items, and a third for particles, it now has a separate file for each item/block/particle. Forge had copied the Minecraft way of doing it, but when Minecraft changed, so did Forge. Previously you only had to copy armor texture files, the rest worked directly out of the mod zip file (mithirl.zip or mithril.jar). Now you have to copy all the texture files. Also, animation of water was done with code, so mithril copied that code. I just changed the color from blue to yellow and made the particles flow up instead of down. Now annimation is a sequence of textures stored in a large image file. I changed the color again, but that image file and the text file with configuration settings that goes with it has to be copied to the textures folder within minecraft.jar. So that means 3 separate folders with textures: armor, mods, and textures. Not convenient, but I haven't found any other way to make it work.
I've posted about the Kitchens mod before. It doesn't have a lot of the things I plan, but I might as well publish what I have now.
To start with, it has cupboards. They work like a chest, but open from the front instead of the top. That means you can stack them against a wall all the way to the ceiling. Crafting recipe is 8 wooden planks, just like a chest, but instead of leaving the centre space empty, leave the top middle empty. If you place two cupboards side-by-side, they combine to form a double cupboard. Just like a chest. You can't place more than two cupboards beside each other, that would confuse which is combined.
Trapped cupboards work just like a trapped chest. But while a trapped chest has a bit of red colour around the latch, a trapped cupboard uses exactly the same texture as a regular chest. Similar crafting recipe: one cupboard plus one tripwire.
The mod also has countertops. It has the same GUI has a crafting table. If you right-click, it works exactly the same as a crafting table. But it's a 1/8 height slab. You craft it with 4 slabs, but all slabs have to be the same type. For example: 4 oak slabs, or 4 spruce slabs, or 4 stone slabs. The reason they have to be the same is the countertop will be the same material as the slabs. It even has the same texture, but with the grid of a crafting table applied to it. Yes, it does work with netherbrick and quartz slabs.
So if you're playing in creative mode and want a realistic kitchen in your house, cupboards and countertops will make it pretty.
For those who use my Booze mod, making dry yeast has an additional step. If you install Kitchens, yeast cake breaks into yeast slices. Then place a yeast slice on a crafting table to become dry yeast. I'm planning to a drying table, but for now just craft. By the way, I described a crafting table on a forum last summer. I read someone was working on making it in a mod, but it wasn't for the same purpose. Perhaps I should look into that mod. Hmm.
This mod also adds rock salt. It will generate as a large deposit that is only 1 block high, and only in rock in an ocean biome. That's because in real life it occurs when a salt sea completely dries up. Often a lake or sea will re-form over that spot. For example, beneath the Great Lakes of North America, or beneath the Mediterranean Sea. Rock salt cannot be used directly. There will be an update that allows you to dissolve, then boil dry to convert rock salt into normal table salt. You have to get the metals and dirt and crap out before eating it.

Hello there. I've discovered that the booze and kitchen mods do not need their textures installed to the minecraft.jar. If packaged a specific way, you can simply drop the entire .zip files into the mods folder and begin playing. A lot less margin for error for the end user.
The files just need to be set up in the following manner:
I hope this helps. I've tested it personally, and it seems to work just fine. The only thing missing is the churn.png in the blocks for kitchens (I'm not certain if that's intended or not). If you would rather me send you (rbdyck) the working example instead, I can. If you need to contact me about it, feel free to leave me a PM or quote my post.
Also, would it be possible to make the spawning of your plants (Grapes, hops, etc) dependent on humidity / temp / altitude rather than biome names, as to be compatible with biome-altering mods?
Actually, it'd be awesome if you could expand wine-making to include varietals that grow in different conditions.
I too would love if you could please do as DraxisWulf suggested regarding biome generation. It would be very nice to be able to play the booze mod alongside biome mods.
I'm sad that I never discovered your mods before, they have a lovely attention to detail. Thank you very much for making them!
Thank you ZeroLevels. I have organized textures so installing Booze and Kitchens is now trivial. Just copy the .zip file to your mods folder. Installing Forge will create the mods folder. Starting Minecraft with Forge will load everything in the mods folder. That's all, no messing around. So no difficulty with textures.
I also did the same thing to Mithril. However, Mithril is a bit more involved. It has armor, and animated textures for gas. You still have to copy textures for those. But that's just textures for 2 folders: armor, and textures/blocks.
::Edit:: I found a way to install animation for gas in the .zip file. You no longer have to copy those textures. You do still have to copy armor, but just that.
Version of my mods is based on the Minecraft version; since this is the second release for Minecraft 1.5.1, I call my mods vesion 1.5.1-2.
DraxisWuf and TehBaclava: I've been working on an addition to Kitchens. I want to get that working before starting on another feature. But I will do what you asked: more varieties of grapes, and sensitive to environmental conditions instead of just biome name.
I was thinking of splitting wine into 2 varieties. Current wine is based on Valiant grapes (the ones in my yard), but that requires 3 pounds of sugar. (Have to work out how many units of Minecraft sugar that is.) I was thinking of splitting into regular wine that requires sugar, and weak wine that doesn't. And ancient Romans didn't add sugar, but didn't add water either. They made wine purely from crushed grapes, but they always added water when they drank it. Romans considered drinking wine without water to be "gauche", but their "wine" was actually concentrate. Let's see: one batch of wine without water would produce 26 bottles (beer bottle size) of wine concentrate. Then in a crafting box: 1 wine concentrate + 2 water bottles becomes 3 bottles of wine. The result would have full flavour, but only as much alcohol as beer. Total water in the finished result is actually about the same.
But that doesn't address additional grape varieties. Which varieties would you like? Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Riesling, Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Muscat? Perhaps Ugni Blanc (known in Italy as Trebbiano), which makes a very acidic, dry and thin wine, said to be virtually undrinkable. But brandy made with this grape is Cognac.
When I lived in Toronto, I rented a house in the Italian end of town. It had 6 grape vines and 14 fruit trees. One vine of Concord, 3 Moscato Bianco (known in France as Muscat Blanc), and 2 Muscat Rouge (probably Moscato Giallo, and Moscato Rosa). Or were the grapes I thought were Concord, actually Black Muscat? Moscato Bianco grapes were extremely fragrant on the vine; the wine was delicious but only had a hint of that fragrance. According to Wikipedia, the number of varieties of Muscat suggests it's the oldest domesticated grape.
What I'm working on: The refrigerator is a chest that opens to the front like a cupboard, but a double refrigerator is two blocks stacked vertically instead of side-by-side. If you do put two side-by-side, they will not merge, but their door handles will be toward each other. So if you have 2 double-fridges, that is 2x2. Open the left side to get one double-fridge, or the right side for the other. Because of the door issue you still won't be able to place more than 2 fridges side-by-side. I'm giving it a light colour. A single block will work as a single fridge; call it a "compact fridge" or "bar fridge". To keep it not so modern, I'm calling it an "ice box". And the crafting recipe will include a block of ice. But the texture will still look more like a refrigerator, and the ice won't melt.

I was thinking maybe at least a red and a white to start. A Chardonnay and a Merlot would probably make for good basic representations. Chardonnay is typically grown at higher altitudes in cooler regions, so it doesn't ripen too fast and retains it's tartness. Merlot grapes are typically grown in low, valley regions which are warm and moist. It'd be nice to find their wild versions in similar conditions in Minecraft - Also, it'd be nice if they actually grew faster (or only) in regions appropriate for them.
Ah, and it'd be excellent if you added Champagne! You could do this by crafting additional yeast and sugar to bottles of white wine. Then you'd need a riddling rack block where you can insert the bottles and turn each one with a click at least once a day (Or it could just be a progress bar) until the carbonation process is complete.
Extra points if you add a rare random chance for bottles to explode and destroy other bottles in the rack. And extra extra points if you can make Champagne bottles a place-able entity, like cake. Then you could right-click to 'pop' the placed bottle with a nice particle effect. And finally, you could craft Champagne flutes and right-click the popped bottle to fill them.
Have been trying for hours to get Mithril to work. Have read every single post on installation 10 times or so. No matter what, it just locks up MC on load.
Going to wipe my entire MC install and try installing everything manually (Forge, Optifine, Rei's, Natura, TMI, MVB and backpacks) without magic launcher.
You have no idea how badly I want to try this if I'm willing to do that!
Lets hope someday Mojang writes a consolidated mod API...
UPDATE: Nope, didn't work.
Fresh install of MC.
Install Forge 7.7.1.611 and delete Meta-Inf. Loaded fine
Install Optifine 1.5.1_HD_U_B3. Loaded fine
Copy the 4 textures over to the Armor folder in Minecraft.jar and drop Mithril.zip into Mods folder.
Hangs on load.
No idea what's wrong as it hangs with no error report.

Also with config file, and mcmod.info
However Mithril appears to have an issue. Once you install the modified base class for gas flow, it causes Minecraft to hang as soon as you log in. Without that file installed, Minecraft will crash as soon as a furnace starts to smelt an ore that spews gas. This modified base class is installed in the client only, not a server. But still, it's a real issue. I mention it here because the mod for Minecraft 1.5 has the same problem. Therefor mods for Minecraft 1.4.7 are available.
Reading the postings, I am confused: Did you update the install-method to be "just drop the zip to the mods-folder"? (Or was this only for use on a server?)The install is a bit involved, and mithril is breaking my game again.

Some screen shots for Kitchens:
Have you copied textures into minecraft.jar, and all folders within? Read the last paragraph of my previous reply, here
Any way you could make the block IDs configurable, though?
Also, splash booze doesn't have a graphic for me when thrown. Not sure if that's an Optifine thing, though.
The files just need to be set up in the following manner:
Bold means folder.
Italics means files.
booze
BoozeLogo.png
mcmod.info
mod_Booze.cfg
kitchens
mcmod.info
mod_Kitchens.cfg
I hope this helps. I've tested it personally, and it seems to work just fine. The only thing missing is the churn.png in the blocks for kitchens (I'm not certain if that's intended or not). If you would rather me send you (rbdyck) the working example instead, I can. If you need to contact me about it, feel free to leave me a PM or quote my post.
Actually, it'd be awesome if you could expand wine-making to include varietals that grow in different conditions.
I'm sad that I never discovered your mods before, they have a lovely attention to detail. Thank you very much for making them!
I also did the same thing to Mithril. However, Mithril is a bit more involved. It has armor, and animated textures for gas.
You still have to copy textures for those. But that's just textures for 2 folders: armor, and textures/blocks.::Edit:: I found a way to install animation for gas in the .zip file. You no longer have to copy those textures. You do still have to copy armor, but just that.
Version of my mods is based on the Minecraft version; since this is the second release for Minecraft 1.5.1, I call my mods vesion 1.5.1-2.
Check your .minecraft folder for a file called ForgeModLoader-client-0.log, or the last "0" may have another number. This is the log file. It should have an error message indicating what happened. Please post.
Thanks for the help. Here is "ForgeModLoader-client-1.log"
