Not sure how it works on a lan game, but map writer stores the map files in the saves folder under the "mapwriter_mp_worlds" folder. Each multiplayer server is stored there under it's IP address, if your lan game changes IP address each time, it will store the files under a new folder. Check the mp worlds folder to see what folders you have there and then match them to what the IP currently is for your lan game.
Interesting. I came looking for this information... I looked in my saves/mapwriter_mp_worlds folder and found:
I haven't encountered that problem myself, but if you can show me the log, I can take a look. If you're not sure how to get the log, please PM me for more help
This has been occurring for me as well. Sometimes it loads the map for the realms server just fine, but every so often it erases all progress. Observed in release 1.7.10. I'm not aware of how to get the log specifically for MapWriter.
EDIT: I just checked the folder for Realms maps and it seems to be creating a new map every so often. I can only imagine this is because the way Realms works the actual server address probably changes constantly. Maybe there's a way to tie it together?
When it comes to mods, I am a real nubie. That is why I liked MagicLauncher. The only time I used the normal minecraft launcher is to get a new version of minecraft downloaded, and then I update the MagicLauncher config to use it.
However I have never been able to get Forge Mods working with MagicLauncher.
Is there some instructions somewhere about how to get MapWriter working with MagicLauncher?
Foxbox is, of course the hosting computer on our network... so .. how can I make it pull from the same folder?
It looks like the IP changes, probably when the network assigns a new IP each time the computer is turned on. The only way I can think to fix that is to assign static IP addresses to every computer on the network so they don't change. Beyond that, copy all the contents of each folder to one folder, let them overwrite, delete the other folders. Start the game, join the LAN computer and then quit, see what IP is assigned that day by looking at the new folder name that was created, copy all the files from the old folder to the new folder, delete the old folder, start the game again. If either computer is restarted or the network hub is power cycled, there will probably be a new IP assigned and you'll have to do this each time you connect.
Unless there's an option in mapwriter that I don't know about to use a different folder, there's no way around it. Personally, I'd assign static IP addresses to every computer on the network, that way they won't change.

Hmm... this is a good theory, but I don't think it's accurate....
My LAN is carefully configured, and each PC actually DOES already have a static IP assigned to it (at our peak we had something like 15 devices connected to our network... so we quickly parceled out numbers so we could keep track of who's what was doing what..) .... more than that, though... This isn't separate days of playing. Here, let me get a screenshot in here...
Every time I reconnected, I got a new folder. Most of the time, the server continued running after I exited out, or crashed. Sometimes the server would crash, but the computer wouldn't be restarted...
That said.....
I wonder if the issue could be resolved by, instead of clicking the instance of the server that is automatically detected ("scanning for games on your local network...")... if one 'added a server' and used the static IP address there, maybe that would allow mapwriter to acknowledge that it's all coming from the same IP... since using the automatically found game... doesn't.
.... Who knows, I'll give it a try this evening when it's time to play

Hokay, I put in the network IP and port in the adress.. .and it worked.. . until the host restarted minecraft... at which point it then started on a different port.
Which brings us to the crux of the issue.. the 5 digit number at the end of the folder names as illustrated above is the port number.
So, I think I was wrong before and each 'new folder' up above appeared after the server crashed, though I honestly didn't think it'd crashed THAT many times,,, but I guess it had.
So now my solution is to look for the new port every time the server restarts and adjust my mapwriter save data folders to be appropriately named.... but it would be nice if there was a way that I could help get the LAN host set up so that minecraft always used the same port.... Hmmm
I just spent the last two hours effing around with Rei's (un-compatible with forge) map, before realizing that everything that I had just done was for naught.
This ease with which I installed this mod brought a tear to my eye. Thank you so much.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of the port number, since I only connect to internet servers and their port is always the same. Unless there's a way to tell the server to start Minecraft on a specific port all the time, I'm not sure there's a way to fix it. There is this interesting line in the config file:
I:portNumberInWorldNameEnabled=1
Try changing that to zero and see what happens?
There's also this:
S:saveDirOverride=
Which might allow you to set a specific save folder? Seems that's what that should do anyway.

Fair enough on that. And on an internet server, the port number would make the difference between servers, in some cases.
Let's see.... I adjusted that first line you found and..
Fixed, it looks like! AWESOME find! THANK YOU
I don't want to mess around with the savedir override... that sounds like it SHOULD work too, but then I"d be concerned about 'accidentally' starting a new world and overwriting things
Anyway, THANK YOU You've been very helpful to me and if I could make you cookies, I would

I have installed Forge for Minecraft. I am running the Sphax Resource Pack. I have one other mod called Village Info. Every time I try to install MapWriter the game crashes when I try to enter a world. It gets through the loader and to the main screen, and then nothing. How do I send you the crash report?
-----------------
I removed the Village Info mod and tried again -- and it still crashed. I have copied the
crash report below.

I've filtered out the noise and highlighted some important information in your crash report. One of these things is not like the other.
Thanks for your reply, and for not telling me I'm stupid for not figuring it out myself. I am sort of new to minecraft and modding, as I'm sure you can tell, but I'm trying to learn. My assumption from your reply is that to use MapWriter I need to play Minecraft Version 1.7.2, is that correct?
My assumption from your reply is that to use MapWriter I need to play Minecraft Version 1.7.2, is that correct?
The problem is you are using Forge 1.7.10 with a mod that's 1.7.2, now sometimes this is okay and everything works just dandy, but a lot of times I've noticed (from personal experience) that 1.7.10 doesn't like 1.7.2 mods for the most part, it's still a new version of Forge, barely a month old if I recall if not even that old, so if you want to get Map Writer to work correctly, download the 1.7.10 version of it and swap that out with the 1.7.2 version you are using now.
Secondly in the future please use spoiler tags when posting crash reports, and could you please go back and edit your old post to include them? It's rude to waste 10 post lengths worth for a single post.

Sure -- want to tell me how to do that? As previously stated, I'm new at this and trying to learn. I don't know HOW to use a spoiler tag -- or even, really, what that is.

Interesting. I came looking for this information... I looked in my saves/mapwriter_mp_worlds folder and found:
Foxbox_51052
Foxbox_51411
Foxbox_54003
Foxbox_65480
Foxbox is, of course the hosting computer on our network... so .. how can I make it pull from the same folder?
This has been occurring for me as well. Sometimes it loads the map for the realms server just fine, but every so often it erases all progress. Observed in release 1.7.10. I'm not aware of how to get the log specifically for MapWriter.
EDIT: I just checked the folder for Realms maps and it seems to be creating a new map every so often. I can only imagine this is because the way Realms works the actual server address probably changes constantly. Maybe there's a way to tie it together?
My folders are called things like:
ec2_23_20_152_223_compute_1_amazonaws_com_26771
ec2_54_82_241_175_compute_1_amazonaws_com_27034
ec2_54_204_117_104_compute_1_amazonaws_com_26923
However I have never been able to get Forge Mods working with MagicLauncher.
Is there some instructions somewhere about how to get MapWriter working with MagicLauncher?

Hmmm
Try changing that to zero and see what happens?
There's also this:
Which might allow you to set a specific save folder? Seems that's what that should do anyway.

Fair enough on that. And on an internet server, the port number would make the difference between servers, in some cases.
Let's see.... I adjusted that first line you found and..
Fixed, it looks like! AWESOME find! THANK YOU
I don't want to mess around with the savedir override... that sounds like it SHOULD work too, but then I"d be concerned about 'accidentally' starting a new world and overwriting things
Anyway, THANK YOU You've been very helpful to me and if I could make you cookies, I would
Cool glad that worked.

I've filtered out the noise and highlighted some important information in your crash report. One of these things is not like the other.

To tell them how to live is to prevent them living.
Also -- I think you meant the reverse of this -- download 1.7.2 and swap it out with the 1.7.10 I'm using now.
SO, the answer to my question is yes.
Thanks for your reply! I'll edit the first post once you tell me how!

just remove the * and put your crash report between the two.
