I might have figured out one of the reasons why the map wouldn't save after closing a world: bspkrsCore, the mod that (among other things) adds a model of you and a mob to the main menu. Disabling that option (by opening bspkrsCore.cfg and setting B:showMainMenuMobs to false) fixes this.
Speaking of which, the one thing I really wish MapWriter would have is the ability to save the map without having to close a world. It's really infuriating when you've explored a ton, made lots of waypoints and so on, but then you lose everything because the game decided to crash and MW never though about saving anything.
Just want to add support for an update to 1.7.10. MapWriter is the best mapping tool around for those of us who just want a map mod (no radar, x-ray vision on the map, etc.). I've tried JourneyMap while waiting for an update to MapWriter and man, what a resource hog, plus "show caves" does x-ray view of all caves around.
I'll give the unofficial version a try, but I don't expect it will work right, based on the reports here. Update when you can please! (pretty please!)
I have been using MapWriter for 1.7.10 via Opis without any issues (compared to earlier versions at least...). I usually play on a SMP server, and the only time mapwriter/Opis fails to save the map data or waypoints is if my client crashes. With clean disconnects it has worked just fine.
If you don't like Opis for some reason, the other version I have tested is the one by jk-5, which only has the minimal one-line (?) change needed from 1.7.2 to 1.7.10. You can get that from github and build it yourself, which is really easy thanks to ForgeGradle (clone the repo or download it as a zip, extract it, in the main directory where there are build.gradle etc files open a command prompt via shift + right click -> Open command window here, then run 'gradlew build' and if it succeeds, the built jar will be in build/libs/).
Edit: Note that if you get the version by jk-5 from github, you need to get the 1.7.10 branch, not master, since master is the same as the upstream/official version, aka. for 1.7.2. Just select '1.7.10' from the Branch drop-down before downloading.

It seems that you are trying to use the 1.7.2 version in 1.7.10, I'm guessing? You need to use a version that has been updated for 1.7.10. Opis has one, or there are some other versions as well a few pages back.
I'm using this mod, and I started a new world after playing for awhile. The map does not reset, so I think there is a village or stronghold or something, but when I end up there, the map regenerates to show show that it's actually nothing. I wish it would reset to nothing so I don't get confused...
EDIT: I am playing in 1.6.4, using a modpack on the AT Launcher, so I don't know if it's been fixed, or if this was meant to be like that. I'm just saying it gets me confused =P

If this is single player, it should only happen if you named the world the exact same name as the old world. Look in the AT Launcher folders for the map writer saves, it should be something like this on Windows, I have no idea where it is on Mac or Linux:
That folder should contain the folders for the saved images for each world, delete the folder for the world you have trouble with. This will erase everything you've mapped in that world, including the new areas, so you'll have to go back and re-map those, but it will clear out the old world data so you're not looking at an outdated map.
You really shouldn't have a world with the same name as an old world in the first place, just saying.

As masa_fi said, there's a couple of unofficial patches for 1.7.10. I am using TheTwo's modded one and it is working flawlessly under 1.7.10. Here's the link to his post - http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/minecraft-mods/1286882-mapwriter-an-open-source-mini-map?comment=887
It would be really nice if we could get the thread author to update the first page with the unofficial patches and instructions (hint hint )
Feature Request: Support for NotEnoughKeys
Not Enough Keys allows players to configure keybinds that use [alt] [shift] and [ctrl] keys.

And while you're at it, could you add this feature to a version for Minecraft 1.7.10?

RE: Turing MapWriter off while keeping MiniMap?
Is there a way to keep the minimap display, but turn off saving of the maps?
I ask because mapwriters that save to the drive seem to be bogging down my old laptop a lot
It says it's open source, so there should be no problem updating it.

jake_stafunk,
i already started a branch for 1.8 the just update file is a few pages back.
only known bug in that version is that if you scroll on the big map the mouse locks in a click state.
i already have this fixed in my dev version but am still updating the configuration to the ingame systen implemented to forge by bskprk.
maybe we could work together to maintain this great mod.

404 (not found) :/
Not sure if it was irritating anybody else how most all of the 1.7 flowers were showing red instead of their actual color, but here's a fix for it.
Replace the text up to the grass part in MapWriterBlockColourOverrides.txt with this:
Hey Jake, I had found a Mapwriter 1.7.10 2.1.2 in Oct 2014. Is your version a newer version than that one ? As it has no version numbers in the name.
Thanks

That's nice, but how do I download the jar file ?
