I have an Asus HD 7850. Quite honestly, both the HD 7850 and GTX 660 are about the same in performance. I'm not really sure on anything else, because you get different features depending on which one you choose. It's all about personal preference I guess. But, I have mine overclocked to be level with a stock HD 7870. I'm getting pretty decent fps with the pre-release as well.

I'm sorry but Macs aren't really built for gaming for this you need a retina display or a good pc. You can still run this on 20 fps for lite shaders atleast. I have a mac also, but I built my own pc computer so I am fine.
The pre2 build crashes my Minecraft when I open a world or join a server, even if I don't have any shaders selected. The only other mod I have (Other than Forge, of course) is Better Sprinting. Any ideas?
It's not a true crash, as there's no crash report, the application just spontaneously closes. Any idea why?

Very true, the HD 7850 should perform about the same as a GF 660, the specs are very similiar.
The thing here is that Minecraft and the GLSL Shaders are designed around nVidia GPUs, so they just run better then any close AMD variant.
Heck, I've run into a few shaders that throw composite / final errors (mostly SEUS Dev Builds) on my AMD system..
In my opinion, still well worth saving the extra money for though!

Very true, if you are going to play Minecraft with GLSL on a MAC you need to use a specific set of shaders, especially with the Intel Embedded GPU (some come with an nVidia 300-series GPU)..
You'll probably want to run Minecraft 1.5.2 & Optifine 1.5.2 Ultra D2 & Karyonix GLSL Shaders 1.45.2, along with Sildur's PC/MAC Intel Shaders.
If you're set on running Minecraft 1.6.2, you can try to use Karyonix GLSL 1.6.2 Pre-2 and the same shaders, but I can't guarantee performance at all there..
Getting 40 fps avg with a 4670K and a GTX 760. Is this normal? Are these shaders more graphically intense than Metro: Last Light?
No they shouldn't be more demanding than Metro: Last Light. And with a GTX 760 you should be getting at least 60 FPS all the time. Make sure that the "Performance:" setting isn't set to "Power Saver", or you are limited to max 40 fps, last time i checked at least.
Yes, it should completely be more demanding than Metro: Last Light!
The GLSL Shaders *do not* use any pre-loaded textures or pre-calculated shading effects like 99% of other retail games released.
Minecraft & the GLSL Shaders are rendered in real-time, on the spot, with 8+ passes (buffers) to render the image as you see it. That is a -tonne of work that your GPU has to do in order to keep up to getting a decent framerate.
Think about it, take an image, render it 8-12 times calculating and adding in effects -- light, shadows (multiple passes for just shadows!), bloom, water, water ripples, waving stuff, depth, clouds/rain, etc etc etc. Then put that image back together, and display it on a screen. That's a heck of a lot of work!
Any other game is pre-drawn, buffered into GPU memory, and all your GPU has to do is render the textures -- the hardest part is Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering..
Sonic ether develops Sonic ether's unbelievable shaders on NVIDIA card.
GLSL compiler in NVIDIA driver is very forgiving.
There can be errors in the code that are not detect on his machine.
Some error are detect when used on AMD graphic driver.
Some error are detect when used on Intel graphic driver.
I think Intel's compiler is the most strict among the three.
Someone should help him fix errors to make it runnable on all 3 GPU vendors.
Another problem is sometimes his shader depends on implementation detail of OpenGL that is undefined in standard.
It can behave differently on different cards or different driver versions.
Sometimes, bug in graphic driver causes problem.

GLSL shaders mod is not entire game. It depends on render code of Minecraft.
Optimization methods that require rewriting and distributing too much of game render code are unacceptable.
I have some optimization and enhancement planned. But it will take time to implement.
Introducing more change also cause incompatibility with other mods.
There is trade-off between compatibility and speed.
----
I think mipmapping is better than noisy scene.
There is no switch to turn off mipmapping in the latest preview.
Karyonix (and every other shaderpack maker), I have always used this tool for fixing compiling bugs with amd : http://developer.amd.com/tools-and-sdks/graphics-development/gpu-shaderanalyzer/ . But I don't found anything for intel/mac drivers (yes, compilers are different for macs apparently).
I also totally agree with mipmaps, blur is far better than noisy scene.

Retina display has nothing to do here, a higher resolution will even decrease the performance even more on an intel GPU.

First of all, your dad is stupid Dell is very reliable just not the greatest. Second, Alienware is a crap waste of money you can build a computer that has the same performance for half the price of a computer made by them. Alienware are very, very nice PCs don't get me wrong but it's just a waste of money for people who have too much to spend.

"You don't know what you're up against,"
"Yeah I do." "Oh."
Yes, but a 7850 is better for the price and more recommended to run shaders.
Who said a 7850 is better?

Please don't. Alienware is owned by Dell and BOTH are really bad companies. They overheat, are overpriced, and have unbalanced specs.
Very true, the HD 7850 should perform about the same as a GF 660, the specs are very similiar.
