Hope the 1.6.2 version will move away from Optifine. Already some great mods out now that don't play nice with it and that doesn't seem to be improving much if any.
I don't believe the overhaul is going that quickly..
I think this release will be a direct port from MC 1.5.2 GLSL 1.46 to an MC 1.6.2 compatible release (including Sonic Ether's modifications according to Karyonix's posts).
Once 1.6.2 is stable, hopefully the MC versions will calm down for a while, and Karyonix can work on the TextureNM bug and Forge port (the Forge port includes migrating away from Optifine).

The next thing to do is loading modified classes in minecraft installation.
I will use culegooner's Tutorial [1.6.2] Changing vanilla without editing base classes [coremods] and [events] very advanced! for start. It should not be very hard. I will convert to more advanced class editing later.
There is only 3 hours left today. If I cannot complete it today I will continue tomorrow.
