The default water-light-falloff is overwritten. This is because of the default lighting system is overwritten and performed inside composite, but things that go on in composite don't appear through transparent materials. The only way of getting around the issue that I can think of is to move the skylight calculation back to its gbuffer.
What I need is a skylight variable that only falls-off underwater. I don't know if this is possible, but if it is please share.

I would like to update my workflow from 1.6.4 to 1.7.10, however the workaround doesn't work, even without Optifine installed. I was hoping you would be able to get to the bottom of this issue, which has been around since at least 1.2.5.
Finally I figured you may know more about this issue now, considering you worked on the out-of-FOV chunks casting shadows issue.
Just from thinking about it, you could fix it by forcing all chunks to load regardless of where the player is looking, doing what I believe disabling Advanced OpenGL is supposed to do.

Consider how light travel from sun to bottom of lake to eye.
1. light travel from sun to water surface (shadowtex1 depth)
2. light travel from water surface (shadowtex1 depth) to opaque block underwater (shadowtex0 depth)
3. light travel from opaque block underwater (depthtex1 depth) to water surface (depthtex0 depth)
4. light travel from water surface (depthtex0 depth) to eye
You can use these to calculate light attenuation in water.
From step 2, difference depth value from shadowtex1 and shadowtex0 is how far light travel down through water.
From step 3, difference depth value from depthtex1 and depthtex0 is how far light travel up through water.
This should work well enough for lake, river, sea.
It will not be correct if there is air gap between water and opaque block behind water.

It tries downloading some large data (around 47 MB) slowly and, after I waited, it freezed.
When I run it again it redownloaded some large data again and never finish properly.
So I uninstalled it.
I installed Java 64-bit from java.com and used the "Minecraft for Windows (alternative)" launcher. It works.

Additionally, you can get the water's depth to surface in most cases using a method that I use in my shaders which assumes the water is plane :
Where uPos is the view-space underwater position (from depthtex1) and fragposition is the position at the water surface.
However like karyonix mentionned it does not work very well on fountains but you get a more accurate representation of water in most cases.

Yeah, it downloads the launcher.jar quick (1.4MB roughly). Then it downloads Java 1.8 Build 25 (that's the 45-47MB), it took a bit for me too, they obviously aren't bombarding the Oracle servers for this...
The unpack for Java 1.8 Build 25 is a whopping 150MB, that's crazy. I just realized when I zipped it up.... Yeesh!
Assuming you're 64-bit, just unzip this to C:\Program Files (x86), then try the MSI installer again. I figure it will detect that the launcher & java are already there, verify integrity, and then just fire up.
You can use these to calculate light attenuation in water. You've overestimated me a little bit. I spent a few hours playing around with this idea today and couldn't get it figured out. So far I've got to:(texture2D(depthtex1, texcoord.st) - texture2D(depthtex0, texcoord.st))
This sort of provides what I need, but not completely. It seems to give a fog that only appears through transparent water. furthermore, I looked through the source and figured from that the only relevant file that depthtex is defined in is final. I haven't tested it in other files yet. The problem with this is even if I figured out how to get exactly what I needed, I don't know what to do with it in final.
I couldn't figure out how to use shadowtex. I couldn't find any examples of it being used in SUES.
I'm probably using depthtex incorrectly/being a general moron, but I really appreciate your help.

I know even less about Java than I do about GLSL. Assuming I could figure out how to do this, I'd probably end up building it off of the source code you released for 1.7.10 because I don't know how to make a forge mod.
I'm not trying to complain here, I just need to know: is it possible to find a crude solution to my problem with a small amount of java knowledge, poking around in the source code for a few days?

Shaders Mod 1.8, Conflicts a lot when using LiteLoader, and Optifine
(did use the forge 1290 and use the 1240 still result the same)
didnt expect to run perfectly lol
There aren't really a lot of conflicts...
There are a few extra tiny bugs, shadows missing, mobs don't flash when hit. That's about it. For a super alpha, it works extremely well!
ShadersMod 2.4.7 does not work with Forge 1292+ or Optifine 1.8 Ultra D1 yet. I haven't had any issues at all with Liteloader, using Autofish & Voxelmap.
Only thing to remember, don't use AA/AF or ConnectedTextures yet. Plus, you should have Better Grass/Snow turned off (well, I use ChromaHills which highly recommends to turn that off in 1.8).
Hi, I've been using sonic shaders mod for more than a year now and I've only recently bought myself a new laptop.
I wanted to play minecraft with shaders on my laptop as well so I installed forge and shader on 1.7.2 version.
The game works well until I enables my shaders - whenever I try to select one of the shaders I have, the game displays crash report screen.
I've tried it over and over again with all other mods excluded and tried different shaders, but the results are the same.
Can anybody help me figure out the problem?

I've tried SEUS and KUDA shaders so far, but they both have this thing in common; oversaturated screen:
Any ideas what i could do to fix? MC 1.7.10 with roughly latest forge and optifine ultra. I tried the older optifine version too that was recommended in first post, but it made all transparent blocks invisible. Framerates are about 45 when i put shadowmap scale down to 0.25. I have put brightness to 0 aswell in video options.
GFX card is Radeon R9 270X with 2GB.
What I need is a skylight variable that only falls-off underwater. I don't know if this is possible, but if it is please share.

Hey Karyonix, I need help finding a workaround for this issue, specifically for my video. If possible it would also be nice if you found a public fix for it, as it's a pretty jarring issue in my Acid Shaders.
This issue is this: If you have a vertex shader move blocks that are out of your FOV into your FOV, they will not be rendered. An here is an example video:
The last part of the video shows a workaround: in 1.6.4, if your shaders have a composite program, and Optifine is not installed, only chunks on the odd x-axis are affected, and they only flicker instead of disappearing completely. Their rate of flickering is constant per second no matter the frame-rate, so if you shoot higher FPS footage (like I am for my project), then a lower ratio of frames will display the flickering. Finally, with frame-blending the effect becomes almost invisible.
I would like to update my workflow from 1.6.4 to 1.7.10, however the workaround doesn't work, even without Optifine installed. I was hoping you would be able to get to the bottom of this issue, which has been around since at least 1.2.5.
Finally I figured you may know more about this issue now, considering you worked on the out-of-FOV chunks casting shadows issue.
Just from thinking about it, you could fix it by forcing all chunks to load regardless of where the player is looking, doing what I believe disabling Advanced OpenGL is supposed to do.
Consider how light travel from sun to bottom of lake to eye.
1. light travel from sun to water surface (shadowtex1 depth)
2. light travel from water surface (shadowtex1 depth) to opaque block underwater (shadowtex0 depth)
3. light travel from opaque block underwater (depthtex1 depth) to water surface (depthtex0 depth)
4. light travel from water surface (depthtex0 depth) to eye
You can use these to calculate light attenuation in water.
From step 2, difference depth value from shadowtex1 and shadowtex0 is how far light travel down through water.
From step 3, difference depth value from depthtex1 and depthtex0 is how far light travel up through water.
This should work well enough for lake, river, sea.
It will not be correct if there is air gap between water and opaque block behind water.
It will badly affect performance. I don't want it. You may make a new mod to do that.
It tries downloading some large data (around 47 MB) slowly and, after I waited, it freezed.
When I run it again it redownloaded some large data again and never finish properly.
So I uninstalled it.
I installed Java 64-bit from java.com and used the "Minecraft for Windows (alternative)" launcher. It works.
Additionally, you can get the water's depth to surface in most cases using a method that I use in my shaders which assumes the water is plane :

Where uPos is the view-space underwater position (from depthtex1) and fragposition is the position at the water surface.
However like karyonix mentionned it does not work very well on fountains but you get a more accurate representation of water in most cases.
Yeah, it downloads the launcher.jar quick (1.4MB roughly). Then it downloads Java 1.8 Build 25 (that's the 45-47MB), it took a bit for me too, they obviously aren't bombarding the Oracle servers for this...
The unpack for Java 1.8 Build 25 is a whopping 150MB, that's crazy. I just realized when I zipped it up.... Yeesh!

Assuming you're 64-bit, just unzip this to C:\Program Files (x86), then try the MSI installer again. I figure it will detect that the launcher & java are already there, verify integrity, and then just fire up.
This sort of provides what I need, but not completely. It seems to give a fog that only appears through transparent water. furthermore, I looked through the source and figured from that the only relevant file that depthtex is defined in is final. I haven't tested it in other files yet. The problem with this is even if I figured out how to get exactly what I needed, I don't know what to do with it in final.
I couldn't figure out how to use shadowtex. I couldn't find any examples of it being used in SUES.
I'm probably using depthtex incorrectly/being a general moron, but I really appreciate your help.

I know even less about Java than I do about GLSL. Assuming I could figure out how to do this, I'd probably end up building it off of the source code you released for 1.7.10 because I don't know how to make a forge mod.
I'm not trying to complain here, I just need to know: is it possible to find a crude solution to my problem with a small amount of java knowledge, poking around in the source code for a few days?

No it doesn't, it works fine.
Using Forge 1290, Optifine 1.8 Ultra C7, ShadersMod 2.4.7.
There aren't really a lot of conflicts...
There are a few extra tiny bugs, shadows missing, mobs don't flash when hit. That's about it. For a super alpha, it works extremely well!
ShadersMod 2.4.7 does not work with Forge 1292+ or Optifine 1.8 Ultra D1 yet. I haven't had any issues at all with Liteloader, using Autofish & Voxelmap.
Only thing to remember, don't use AA/AF or ConnectedTextures yet. Plus, you should have Better Grass/Snow turned off (well, I use ChromaHills which highly recommends to turn that off in 1.8).

I wanted to play minecraft with shaders on my laptop as well so I installed forge and shader on 1.7.2 version.
The game works well until I enables my shaders - whenever I try to select one of the shaders I have, the game displays crash report screen.
I've tried it over and over again with all other mods excluded and tried different shaders, but the results are the same.
Can anybody help me figure out the problem?

I also made a video :
Any ideas what i could do to fix? MC 1.7.10 with roughly latest forge and optifine ultra. I tried the older optifine version too that was recommended in first post, but it made all transparent blocks invisible. Framerates are about 45 when i put shadowmap scale down to 0.25. I have put brightness to 0 aswell in video options.
GFX card is Radeon R9 270X with 2GB.
