I don't know how much this has been discussed, but it's not a bad plan all around... Except...
It should definitely be compatible with Buildcraft and other mods that add engines, and should require being hooked up to a powered line in order to stay lit.
On that note:
1 - Electric lights require both fuel, and filaments. (Fuel only in the case that they aren't attached to a power network)
* Fuel - Redstone dust is a fine stand-in for fuel in this case, since it would make little sense to use biofuel or lantern oil in this case. Glowstone dust could be used for a longer burn duration.
* Filament -
Your basic filament is made with redstone dust and an iron nugget. It's duration is, of course, configurable, but should last through a couple tanks of fuel, at least.
More advanced filaments could be made with gold and redstone dust, etc, and have longer burn durations.
Note: Even mounted electric lanterns require filaments. So it may be wise to store longer-burn duration filaments for village/home use, rather than using relatively easily replaceable iron filaments.
Just a quick thought...
These are great ideas. I'll add them to the (ever-growing) to-do list!
I'm hoping for buildcraft pipe / liquiduct-fed streetlamps with their own internal storage.
It's already on the to-do list!
EDIT: I've not had a lot of time to work on Lanterns recently due to exams and other projects, but soon I'll start working my way down the to-do list and get some of these great ideas implemented.
~theres a problem with the download~
whenever I get to Ad Fly and click the skip ad button it says theres an error. i've waited a week and same thing, is there an alternate download, is Ad Fly being a n***er or is it something else entirely? an response would be super.. greatly.. appreciated.

Great mod, but when i try to use it with my mods installed it crashes. I got 74 mods so i am kinda bored to test them seperately . Are there any known mod compatibility issues?
EDIT: Forgot to mention i am using mc 1.5.2 64bit, with latest forge and optifine installed
No compatibility issues I know of, but optifine is known to cause problems with some forge mods. Try removing just that and see if it helps.
If you could post the crash log, that would also help a lot!
I made a mod showcase video for this mod. I thought this mod was pretty cool. I think it's awesome to not have to use torches and to have the ability to always see at night. Great job with mod.
I just had an interesting idea for a Railcraft server, for the larger trains seen on some Railcraft servers, have a lantern cart right after the locomotives & at the very end, like a real older train would. And keep the tracks behind the train somewhat clearer for the passengers' safety... The front doesn't need it, but it makes it clear if you're about to be run down by a train in a dark tunnel.
HYPERNERD YOU MUST ADD THIS INTO THE MOD BEFORE UPDATING
You need an handle to grab lantern if you not you lose health (image)
Handle can be used to hung lanterns on hooks that can be placed on ceilings, walls
And at last you can place lanterns on floor. (image)
plus a new model
Please add those they are from mod unlit torches and lanterns mod and i dont want those unlit torches your's mod is better but model you could add
The model for holding the lantern out in front of you has been on my to-do list for a while, and I like the idea of placing hooks on the ceiling.

Whoo, little touches for the win.
This is a cool idea, and is pretty much what I had in mind when I added the Lantern carts.
Can we get a Lamplighter spawn toggle please? For whatever reason we are getting cults of 100+ lamplighters spawning in the wild and nether.
I am NOT reporting a bug in lamplighters, I'm sure its an incompatibility issue with another mob spawning mod, but still, it would be great to be able to switch these guy off.
A simple spawn entitylamplighter = T/F would be perfect!

Also, does moving around with it cause FPS drops, as with dynamic lights?
I like this idea. I'll add it to the list and see what I can do.
Yes, unfortunately updating lighting so fast will cause fps drops on any computer, no matter how powerful.

Hmm, It's working fine for me. Here's the alternate link anyway: http://www.mediafire.com/download/m7q4ufyjdejqkdr/Lanterns_1.3.5_Universal.zip
An artefact of the way the lanterns emit light, unfortunately there's nothing at all that I can do to change it.

but creative is ok
Do you have a flint and steel in your inventory? You need it to light lanterns when not in Creative mode.
Server: Bunny Burrow ----------- Currently not accepting new players
24/7 Survival server running custom made command block enhancements.
Hmm, shouldn't do. Can you send me your config file so I can try it myself?
Entirely possible, although I may have something else planned around this.
Here is the video I made:

I'll add it to the to-do list. Would you want to disable village lanterns spawning too, or just the NPCs themselves?
EDIT: Never mind, I'll add both as options.
