If i look at my whole list of all non-new-dimension armors i must say there is more balance needed.
In my opinion, the whole balance of this mod is absurdly messed up. The armor and tool values are absolutely skewed, they make no sense whatsoever from a design standpoint. I have no idea if this is a whole mess of bugs or if this is actually deliberate on the part of the mod designers. If it is actually deliberate, I really have to wonder as to what is going on in their heads. The armor/tool values are so far gone, that I simply do not use anything from this mod with regard to armor and tools. I have installed another mod that adds it's own armor and tools and use those instead.
The other thing I have major issues with is the Enthralled Dramcryx, wandering instant death feature. You are happily mining away, everything is well lit, and POOF, you're dead! Are you having fun yet? You loose everything, cause if you back for it, POOF you're dead again. You wear the best armor you can, no difference, wandering instant death shows up, POOF you're dead. Loose the armor. Of course you could simply never, ever go to level 7, keep your max depth at level 8, but that just forces you to grind freaking forever looking for the essential ores.
What's the solution? Install the crystal wing mod. Keep it on your hotbar. You catch a glimpse of Mr. instant death, hit that crystal wing and POOF, you're out of there. Approach that area again as close as you dare and seal it off, never to return.
In my opinion, good game design requires that the rarer the item/material, the better it should be. The current state where iron equipment is significantly better than diamond (diamond appears to have been nerfed to be weaker than leather), or realmite, or pretty much anything you can acquire for a very long time is bizarre in the extreme. And that is not the only balance issue, all the equipment is absolutely messed up. And no game is made better by having insta-kill monsters randomly appearing (in the light no less) where players have little choice but to wander. That is not a game, you have ZERO chance against one of these things, it is pure "loose everything, start over".
There's your problem. You're on a Mac. Macs don't play well with Minecraft.
WRONG. I'm on a mac and i got minecraft, divine RPG and 6 other mods working fine. Its MCpatcher that doesn't work with this mod, ask the mod developers themselves, they agree with me. And mac don't have any problems with MC, i got it working about 2 minutes after i bought the game.
And unless I'm doing something horribly wrong, my mac cannot open minecraft.jar,
you are doing something wrong indeed if you just double-click the minecraft.jar. To open it, or open it with the Unarchiver, which will give you a folder called minecraft, then re-name minecraft to minecraft.jar. Or add .zip to the end of minecraft.jar and double-click it.
I agree that Balance is horribly skewed, The best sword you can get fairly early is the bloodgem sword, infinite durability and Stronger than most other swords. that you can get without entering a new dimension. IMO Values should go like this:
Leather
Chainmail
Gold
Iron
Realmite
Diamond
Kraken/Aquatic gear (Crabs are way too strong for what they give you, they really should be much weaker, I'd say cutting down all their values to 1/4 of what they are, I can't even take one crab without having knockback I or II and wearing full iron armor)

Blood gem(add more bloodgem stuff and reduce how common they are, I have 6 bloodgems just sitting in a chest doing nothing because they aren't used for anything but a sword)

For Mobs, Cut down on the spawn rate of cyclops, Cut the number of drops from the sand things that drop sandstone down to 50 from 100 (you won't ever need that much sandstone, plus if you have looting, your inventory fills up pretty fast with sandstone), Reduce the health of all overworld mobs to something that is difficult with iron gear but not impossible, make it average with diamond gear.
Netherite armor should grant you Fire resistance potion buff while wearing it to make it great for actually traversing the nether without worrying about blazes and lava. Fire spiders need their damage toned down, I was testing with Full Iron armor with hacked resistance of one piece having Protection X (yes Protection level 10) and it was still doing 3-4 hearts of damage (I had another piece of armor with Fire Protection X so fire wasn't doing the damage) Which is outrageous considering how common Nether Spiders are. I haven't been to the End yet so I can't comment on the End mobs.
The balance could be so much better and I hope that with 1.2 you consider looking at how difficult it is to actually make the armor and then adjust the values accordingly, Because right now, blood gem is one of the best swords you can get and the new ores are essentially worthless except to make the new stuff for the new bosses.
Ender is not so rare as Bedrock.
Netherite is more common as both.
Best sword for beginners is the slime sword in my opionion.
Kraken armor is so rare never saw whale or hai.
Slime sword i guess is a great beginner sword, but it does require you to craft 3 diamond swords. Ender Isn't as rare as bedrock no.. but it is much harder to reach the end than to get to the nether, and Bedrock requires Rupees to make.
I just really think it should be that the netherite and Ender armor should be more rare and more difficult to make as they require going into different dimensions. I also think that if it is possible to make Ender Watchers Not spawn until after the Ender Dragon is Defeated, because then it makes it reallly difficult to fight the ender dragon while having to worry about Ender watchers teleporting behind you to fight you. Also the new mobs take so long to kill that the nether is near unnavigatable without really good armor and weapons. I mean, i'm running around in creative mode with full vanilla diamond armor with Rank X enchantments (again cheated in with NEI) and a Bloodgem sword with Sharp X and its taking a good 10-15 wacks on most of the foes to kill them, Nether spiders deal crazy damage, and it takes 4-5 hits from said sword to kill them. Netherite is way too common and should be a bit more rare and appear in larger veins, Blood gems should be much more rare, and i've yet to see a blood gem drop from a cyclops. (Make the bloodgem ores more rare and make bloodgems more likely to drop from cyclops) and as i stated, It was my opinion on how the rarity and values of the Armors and gears should be. The Vanilla Dimension armors should be the highest/rarest amor available before reaching the Divine RPG dimensions because they require more work to get too. Protip: use enchanted armor. I have a full set of enchanted ender armor, and the "walking instadeath" Enthralled Dramatyx (or however it's spelled) deal somewhere between 0 and 0.5 hearts of damage to me. Back when I was using enchanted inferno armor, they did about 1.5 hearts.

We've been over this. Your mod is not outdated. It says that because Xolova and others are beta-testing version 1.2 (my guess would be that they're doing it on a private server, similar to the one used for beta testing Thaumcraft 3)
I'm gonna stop you right there. There's your problem. You're on a Mac. Macs don't play well with Minecraft. Out of the two Mac owners I know, neither of them are able to get Minecraft to work at all, haven't been able to since Beta 1.7.3
I suggest partitioning your hard drive into a dual install with whatever Mac OS you have on one side and Windows 7 on the other. I'm running on a Windows Vista, and I've never had a problem with Minecraft except for mod conflicts.
FALSE. Then something is wrong on their end. My Mac is running OS 10.8.2, and has been working just fine since I got it in Beta 1.7.3. I just download, click the application, and it opens. They may not have enough RAM.

Fire spiders need their damage toned down, I was testing with Full Iron armor with hacked resistance of one piece having Protection X (yes Protection level 10) and it was still doing 3-4 hearts of damage (I had another piece of armor with Fire Protection X so fire wasn't doing the damage) Which is outrageous considering how common Nether Spiders are. I haven't been to the End yet so I can't comment on the End mobs.
The balance could be so much better and I hope that with 1.2 you consider looking at how difficult it is to actually make the armor and then adjust the values accordingly, Because right now, blood gem is one of the best swords you can get and the new ores are essentially worthless except to make the new stuff for the new bosses.
Slime sword i guess is a great beginner sword, but it does require you to craft 3 diamond swords. Ender Isn't as rare as bedrock no.. but it is much harder to reach the end than to get to the nether, and Bedrock requires Rupees to make.
I just really think it should be that the netherite and Ender armor should be more rare and more difficult to make as they require going into different dimensions. I also think that if it is possible to make Ender Watchers Not spawn until after the Ender Dragon is Defeated, because then it makes it reallly difficult to fight the ender dragon while having to worry about Ender watchers teleporting behind you to fight you. Also the new mobs take so long to kill that the nether is near unnavigatable without really good armor and weapons. I mean, i'm running around in creative mode with full vanilla diamond armor with Rank X enchantments (again cheated in with NEI) and a Bloodgem sword with Sharp X and its taking a good 10-15 wacks on most of the foes to kill them, Nether spiders deal crazy damage, and it takes 4-5 hits from said sword to kill them. Netherite is way too common and should be a bit more rare and appear in larger veins, Blood gems should be much more rare, and i've yet to see a blood gem drop from a cyclops. (Make the bloodgem ores more rare and make bloodgems more likely to drop from cyclops) and as i stated, It was my opinion on how the rarity and values of the Armors and gears should be. The Vanilla Dimension armors should be the highest/rarest amor available before reaching the Divine RPG dimensions because they require more work to get too. So Netherite and Ender armor should be the best before any of the Extra-dimensional armors. You can obtain all the other armors before even entering the nether so they shouldnt' be quite as good. The nether was already a fairly dangerous place, now its downright dangerous.
Protip: use enchanted armor. I have a full set of enchanted ender armor, and the "walking instadeath" Enthralled Dramatyx (or however it's spelled) deal somewhere between 0 and 0.5 hearts of damage to me. Back when I was using enchanted inferno armor, they did about 1.5 hearts.

We've been over this. Your mod is not outdated. It says that because Xolova and others are beta-testing version 1.2 (my guess would be that they're doing it on a private server, similar to the one used for beta testing Thaumcraft 3)
FALSE. Then something is wrong on their end. My Mac is running OS 10.8.2, and has been working just fine since I got it in Beta 1.7.3. I just download, click the application, and it opens. They may not have enough RAM.
