Thought of a old favorite spell(DnD based): Magic Missile.
As any DnD player can tell you, the calling card of the Magic Missile is that it never misses. So it'd be a fast moving homing spell. Diminished would deal 2 damage(1 full heart). Normal Casting would deal 5 damage(2.5 hearts). But casting it at Augmented level only deals 6 damage(3 full hearts). So what's so good about it? At Augmented level, it can target The Darkness, placing a Mage Light(at least normal level, maybe augmented, your call) in a location dark enough for hostile mobs to spawn. Unless it has actual foes to target instead. Or if it hits a Elf with Blue- no Grey eyes. In the latter case, said elf drops Mountain Dew, which is basically a stackable Mana Potion(of some level, not sure which yet).
Another spell is actually a set of spells. First is Mana Orb, which fires a slow moving Mana Orb, which can hit foes for decent amounts of Magic Damage. But if hit with a Mana Jolt, which is basically a potent Magic Damage one target bolt of blue lightning from your hands, it explodes dealing great damage to foes near it, and if you hit it with Mana Drain instead, it turns into a Mana Sink(like what Mana Creepers leave behind if they "explode", only more fun), which drains foes of mana if they are near it, sucks them in, and instead of just wearing off when it's done, it releases the caught mana in a blast of Magic Damage. Both spells do more damage when cast at a higher spell level, but unless the Mana Jolt is at least the same level as the Mana Orb, it fizzles. Also happens if hit by any other spell(which means it can be shut down early if one is smart).

Quick question. I remember, when watching the LP series, hearing something about a Spell API that will allow us to add our own spells. I haven't been able to find any written info either here or on the wiki. Will that API be released with the first public release or is it something that is planned for a later release?

It won't be until a much later release, that's why there's no documentation on it.
just wondering if this will be released for 1.3.2 or 1.4.x
1.3.2.
Also, Mithion/Tofski, I've been reading around the wiki, and I've got some idea of what each of the spells does, save for Temporal Anchor. Do you think you could maybe provide a brief explanation and/or update the wiki with that information to satisfy my curiosity?
And Mithion, you should consider getting an IRC channel for the informal discussion of this mod on Espernet.
Temporal Anchor is basically a spell that suspends you in time. Essentially you cast it and you can do whatever you want for the duration of the spell (take on creepers, use up all your mana digging, etc). Once the buff expires or you "die" you will return to the point where you cast the spell but any items you collected will be in your inventory, you won't actually die if you die while it is active and you have the mana you had when you cast the spell.
Hopefully this answers your question regarding the spell.

Wow. That's a pretty interesting and unusual one. Thanks for the explanation!
You sir just blew my mind, this is amazing, I'd love to beta test and support it
NOTE: I would probably design a tower but I do not know how to move it to a .schematic folder
Mana field
Channeled/self
While activated creates a sort of force field that reflects projectiles (this could be used to hit opponents with their own spell)
But it does not stop mobs, it would slow any mob (it would also slow yourself so you could even use it as slow fall) severely and drain their mana if they have any
Also while activated it would constantly drain mana from the user
Second spell
Gear up EDIT: crap I didn't realize you already had magic armor very similar to my idea (the robe things)
Maybe rename it to summon tools or something like that, it would hav the same idea, magic tools that drain mana for each use instead of durability and/or last only limited amounts of time
Also channeled/self
Once activated will equip you with several spirit/mana items that only last limited amounts of time or drain mana to use
It would give you a sword, pick, and armor, possibly a bow as well
The mana tools would be as fast as gold but drain mana/ last limited time like I mentioned
The armor would passively drain very small amounts of mana while worn but drain larger amounts when you are being attacked
And again I would be happy to contribute a tower idea if someone would kindly inform me of how to convert it to a .schematic file
I also say good luck to you, this really looks like a good mod, one that could even exceed thaumcraft (which in a way it has already, still in beta and already amazing)

They're no longer accepting beta tester applications, sorry.
Also, I'm not sure it's fair to say that this mod has "exceed[ed]" ThaumCraft. The idea of this mod is too fundamentally different from that of ThaumCraft 2. They can both be described as "magic", but that's about it as far as similarities (except for other extremely general ones) go. Additionally, the upcoming and greatly anticipated ThaumCraft 3 will be substantially different from ThaumCraft 2, so any comparisons being made are fairly irrelevant in that regard.
I love both of these mods; Ars Magica is fantastic in its own right, and represents exploration of an unsettled frontier for Minecraft modding. I just don't feel it's a fair comparison to make. A number of people have made such a comparison earlier in the thread, and I just wished to share my thoughts.
Ah yes I just figured out they aren't accepting the beta stuff anymore
But hey, it's still ideas for Mithion etc
But yes it definitely a very good, the exceeded part is up for debate but regardless both mods are VERY good
Although slightly disappointed at missing the beta ideas and benefits
I guarantee that I'll play with this mod
You (mod maker) deserve the download even if its only one (or more depending on how many friends I can show how awesome this mod is)
PS. Thank you for SMP support, this looks like it will be really fun with friends

Just to expand a bit - your health is stored as well, and is restored to that level upon buff expiration or death.

SMP so far is a riot, I hope to get dedicated server working as well soon too! I'm very excited for the open beta, it sucks having to tell people they can't play quite yet.

I will likely get myself an IRC channel once the open beta starts.
Why wait? You could make one and have it be ready before you need it(and if you can archive things that are tagged somehow, you could also use it for error reports and suggestions), and it would allow people who have questions to get answers relatively quickly(without the risk of your question being missed, such as my question about some rough values on Raw Essence Values for things, so one can decide what they want to farm first when they get their raw essence flowing).
It would end up having people asking stupid questions and asking to be on the closed beta team, true, but you could also end up with people who aren't in the closed beta who know how to solve issues or suggest fixes for bugs as well(I know enough about debugging games I play that I can often fix errors or at least identify the cause and a possible fix myself, but I can't relay my general know-how to people using the mod without a IRC Channel).

a flying book mob they will spawn when there's a bunch of bookshelves around they will fly around going from bookshelf to bookshelf and then into the bookshelf as if they were being placed into it and despawn when killed they would drop paper and maby leather but when attacked they all agro like pigmen and they spawn faster and will keep spawning till all the bookshelves are gone
a levitation spell where you can target any mob or player and they will follow your cursor draining your mana you could also target a block have it unalign with the grid and follow your cursor around not sure if the different levels of casting should do anything special maby the lower the casting the less synced the block or mob is to your cursor like if you move it on diminished then it will trail behind your cursor but on augmented it stays with your cursor

Expanding boundaries since 2011.
That way, any and all rune combinations will result in a spell.
I don't think that's it. There's Recall/Mark for that.
