Hey, found a nice little exploit with Soul Shards on my server by one of my players.. Here's how it works.
1. Get yourself 2 Soul Shards.
2. Go out and get a single soul of the same mod type on both.
3. Go to the anvil and place both Shards in and "repair" it.
4. Profit! You now have a Tier 1 Shard.
5. Repeat steps 1-3.
6. Now take both Tier 1 Soul Shards and place them in the anvil, "repair" them.
7 Profit! You know have a Tier 3 Soul Shard! (Yes, it skips Tier 2.)
8. Repeat the process till you have your ez-mode Soul Shard!
Hope you can fix this. Originally found out about this while using Enchanting Plus. Where repairing a tier 1 soul shard would give you a tier 5 soul shard.
I also have found this being abused on my server, hopefully it will be fixed in the next update. Until then we have disabled the crafting of vile essence so the economy/server is not flooded with t5's.

I don't think its a bug or exploit, tried it with version 1.25 and it calculate how many kills in each shard and addition each other in a anvil, its not an exploit really.
On the other hand for the ones that find it hard to get a wither skeleton shard, grab yourself a gravity gun (the first one, not the supercharged that require a nether star) then grab a normal skeleton spawner (not a soul shard one here) and bring it through a nether portal (be advised to bring a flint and steel with you it turned off my portal when traveling through with the spawner) install the spawner in a normal secure dark area (a 9x9 of cobble works just fine) and wait, there's a ton of wither skeleton that will get out of this thing, yes its long compared to a tier5 spawner to get them but its easier than searching for them and not knowing when and where they will be and getting all kind of indesirable visitors (blaze, ghast, fire bats if you have thaumcraft 3...)

Not sure what "calculation" that you did, but this:
Shows that you need very few kills of any mob and with some experience. The only expensive part is the 3 diamonds it may take for it and that doesn't really equal a tier 5 spawner to me.

I'm not sure of what version he was using there but I hope its gonna get patched at least to take some of this bug, didn't know you could combine multiple type of shards to get the one you want, makes the things too easy to me, they should be able to be repaired to get a better one but only if the shards are lets say 64 zombie = a tier1 in the first anvil slot, then another shard with 64 zombie another tier 1 it should give you a tier 2 because 64+64=128 which is a tier2 shard, I would also expect a random thing to happen to them in the anvil sometimes a small chance (exemple 10% chance) the spawner turn into a better one and also a slight chance the spawner get to a lower level when combining, that would balance it a little bit.
For the next version of ForgeIRC, could you make it so even if a server has fIRC installed I can still use it separately client-side? Currently, if it's installed on a server then any use of "/fi reconnect" will only affect the server, not my client.
I got a problem, i wanted 2 try it out, and got myself a t3 and a cage, and placed the cage, and right clicked with the shard, but it didn't go into the cage why not?
Where did you place the cage exactly, it has to be at least two blocks from the ground and at least 1 block from any kind of ceiling for the cage and spawner to work. Also make sure the shard actually is defined if you just cheated it with NEI or from creative make sure to at least kill an enemy with it in your hotbar, I don't think a shard would work if there's no defined monster or animal on it.

The only way the randomness would actually balance anything is if the level of the output shard was hidden somehow. Otherwise, I can just keep picking up one of the input shards until the output one has the bonus output. I do agree that the output needs to be equal to the sum of the kills on the 2 input shards though.
I also know, from watching DW20's vids, that ShadwDrgn is planning on adding blocks that let you combine shards and even store the souls (think a "soul battery"), hopefully when that is implemented he will just remove the ability to repair the shards entirely.

I found two bugs with Soul Shards v1.26 :
1) When breaking a soul cage imbued with a wither skeleton shard, you get back a soulcage and a simple skeleton shard, losing the exact mob type. (Happened with a tier-1 shard in the Nether.)
2) Not sure if this is really a bug but it could worth mentionning it somewhere: when imbuing a soulcage with a shard, you lose the extra souls above the tier threshold. E.g. if you use a tier-1 shard with 76 kills, it will be reset to 64 kills if you destroy the cage.
1.) I believe that that is a bug, i've had the same happen to me and my teir 5 wither skeleton shard.

I did kill a few Zombies, i place it in the open 2 try it out, i placed it on the ground. So i have too move it 2 Blocks above the ground?
I'M not 100% sure that a cage can work if not 2 blocks above the ground but I've just seen that you got only a tier3 if that's the case, did you make sure it was in a pitch black room with no light in it, the tier 3 require a total dark room to work.
Bug report. I created a tier one VILLAGER zombie spawner. I spawned a single villager zombie and then decided to move the spawner. I broke the spawner and received a tier one REGULAR zombie shard. I'm using the current MindCrack pack in FTB.
I have idea for 1.5 updete for soulshards that you can craft shards together to make shards that will spawn mobs riding other mobs(skeletons and crepeers on bats, skeleton tower etc.)

Its obviously a bug don't you think, how could it be intentional to destroy the hard work of someone that took the time to kill 1024 mobs, I would call it griefing by a modder if its truly intentional.
Any word on updates or ideas for when 1.5 version comes out(I guess that will be next update)
Also while I like combining shards its crazy when 10 kills gives the player an easy teir 5. Shard is there anyway for the anvil to see how many kills on shards before you combine and what type? If not then maybe make an item for shards to combine in a new machine. Also while I can read the shards to find out numbers of kills it would be nice if there was a head on the Shard.
One last thing think you could make soul shards work with all mobs that are in ftb at least(yeah boss mobs seperate I understand)

Are the rare drops already removed, or is that in a beta version still to be released?
I ask because of Direwolf20's statement about rare drops being removed from this mods spawners...
