I'd recommend changing the way to acquire steel, by instead being craftable by 1 Iron ore and 2 Coal ore in (perhaps) a workbench, or maybe just cooking the Iron ore again in a Furnace... This is to make the methods to acquire steel more realistic.

It is smeltable, like Iron Ore and Gold Ore, to make the ingot. But, if you knew that, I will (try to) make steel ingots by cooking the Iron again.
Sorry, didn't understand the first time, but now I understand.
v1.2 is out! Report any bugs by posting a comment on this topic. The bugs will help me make SteelMod better for Minecraft. Feedback is also appreciated.
Another suggestion along the lines of making it more Steel-y and less 'new ore'-y: Make a new furance-like block that only consumes charcoal and iron ingots to make steel. I see the reasoning behind not using coal being due to impurities like sulfur and other contaminants that form within regular coal. A good start, though.
This sounds like a perfect solution to the gap between iron and diamond, with one major exception; steel shouldn't be an ore. You should either change the item sprites, the ore texture, and the name of the items to something completely different or change the way it's acquired. Actual steel is usually made by combining iron and carbon. A logical Minecraft way to do this would be either combine iron with coal in a crafting table or re-smelt iron ingots into steel, which would act as tempering. I'm gonna watch this topic for now, though. This looks very promising.
kinda cool mod, but as someone who does metallurgy as a hobby, it would bother me if I didn't point out that steel isn't an ore, It is just iron ore that is smelted differently, and with pig iron, and limestone.
Steel is iron that has most of the impurities removed. The open hearth-furnace is one way to create steel from pig iron. The pig iron, limestone and iron ore go into an open-hearth furnace. It is heated to about 1,600 degrees F (871 degrees C). The limestone and ore form a slag that floats on the surface. What I'd recommend both to make it a little more realistic and to shorten the amount of code, is make it so that you have to smelt iron twice ore, (see what I did there?) make it so that when you smelt iron with lava it produces steel ingots. Of course if realism isn't a big thing for you, then it's fine just the way it is.
^^ that's actually a better idea. It could require lava buckets as the fuel in a furnace with iron ore (or ingots?) as the material and have a longer smelting time than regular iron.

Thank you for this much better idea. Since I'm no expert at metals, I'm glad you can give me realism and convince me to implement it into this mod.
It crashes me when attempting to smelt iron ingots.
