There are Netherrack and Blaze tools in this mod. There is a Netherrack and Blaze version of each of the following tools:
Pickaxe
Axe
Shovel
Sword
The Netherrack tools are equal in durability and mining speed to wooden tools, and Blaze tools are like iron tools. Each of these tools also has a special ability:
Pickaxe: Can mine Blaze Ore (see below)
Axe: Drops charcoal instead of wood when breaking logs
Shovel: Has a chance to drop glass when digging sand and has a higher chance to get flint from gravel
Sword: Has a natural Fire Aspect, without the enchantment
The shovel's and axe's abilities are better with the Blaze tool than the Netherrack tool.
These tools can be crafted with Blaze Rods instead of sticks, and Netherrack blocks or Blaze Ingots instead of the main tool material, for Netherrack and Blaze tools respectively.
Armor
Blaze armor is mostly equivalent to Iron armor, but has natural Fire Protection I (without the enchantment). The Blaze Helmet and Blaze Boots also have special abilities:
The Blaze Boots allow the player to move at normal speed on Soul Sand.
The Blaze Helmet allows the player to breathe the toxic gas of the Nether Mushroom (see below) and not be damaged or dizzy by it
Each piece of Blaze armor is crafted with the normal recipes, but with Blaze Ingots for the material.
Blaze (Material)
Blaze is the main material of the Nether, and it is present in many different forms. It can be transformed from most of these forms to the others. Two of the forms are present in vanilla Minecraft:
Blaze Rod
Blaze Powder
The other two are added in this mod:
Blaze Nugget
Blaze Ingot
Both of these can be used as furnace fuels, with Blaze Nuggets smelting 6 items and Blaze Ingots smelting 36 items.
Blaze Ore
Blaze Ore generates naturally in the Nether with the same rarity as Gold Ore in the overworld. It can only be mined with a Netherrack Pickaxe or Blaze Pickaxe. When mined, it drops 1-3 Blaze Nuggets. Silk Touch does work on this ore, and the block can be smelted in a furnace for one Blaze Ingot.
Conversions
The different forms of Blaze can be acquired in several ways, including crafting between them. Following are the recipes for converting between these forms:
2 Blaze Nuggets in a stick shape (one above the other) to make 1 Blaze Rod
2 Blaze Ingots in a stick shape (one above the other) to make 6 Blaze Rods
6 Blaze Nuggets in a trapdoor shape (two horizontal rows, one above the other) to make 1 Blaze Ingot
1 Blaze Ingot to make 6 Blaze Nuggets
1 Blaze Nugget to make 1 Blaze Powder
6 Blaze Rods in a trapdoor shape (two horizontal rows, one above the other) to make 2 Blaze Ingots
Nether Mushroom
The Nether Mushroom is a new type of mushroom that generates naturally in the Nether. It has the same rarity as other mushrooms. Although it has many properties like other mushrooms, it cannot be crafted into soup. This mushroom can only be planted in the Nether or near Essence of the Nether (see below), and on Netherrack, Soul Sand, or Nether Brick. The Nether Mushroom also has several negative effects, but they could potentially be used to the player's advantage in some situations.
Effects
The Nether Mushroom has several effects, which are caused in a 7x7 square around the mushroom:
Produces toxic fumes
Causes leaves to decay more quickly
Causes saplings and grass to die
Toxic Gas
The toxic gas produced by Nether Mushrooms only appears above Soul Sand, Netherrack, and Nether Brick. The fumes have several effects, including the following:
Damages mobs by 2 hearts every half second
Gives player Nausea potion effect (dizziness) for 30 seconds
Helps Nether Wart grow faster
Makes smoke particles
Essence of the Nether
Essence of the Nether is a plant that is found very rarely in the Nether. It can be planted on Soul Sand and has three stages of growth. This plant encompasses the whole of the Nether and allows events that usually only happen in the Nether to occur in the overworld as well.
Growth
Essence of the Nether has three stages of growth. Normally, it grows very slowly, but it can be slightly sped up by the presence of lava horizontally adjacent (in one or two dimensions) to the Soul Sand on which it is planted.
Nether Zone
The Nether zone is the area around the Essence of the Nether in which Nether events can occur in the overworld (or in The End). This zone is a cube, and the size of the cube is dependent upon the stage of growth of the Essence of the Nether. This cube is centered on the Essence of the Nether, and the different sizes of the cube are as follows:
Stage 1: 7x7x7
Stage 2: 21x21x21
Stage 3: 41x41x41
In this Nether zone, Nether Wart can grow (naturally and with Blaze Powder, see above) and Nether Mushrooms work.
Miscellaneous
Blaze Powder acts as fertilizer when used on Nether Wart, like Bone Meal on wheat. This only works when in the Nether or near Essence of the Nether (see above).

Known Bugs
Random crashes! Don't know what causes them. Error seems to indicate recursion that I don't think should be happening. If anyone could help me with this problem, I would GREATLY appreciate it! (Fixed?)
Essence of the Nether seems to not work entirely correctly (area of effect not big enough in at least one direction) when fully grown.
This is very awesome looking, maybe you could even add biomes to the nether instead of the 2 biomes currently in the nether, fortresses and "hell". this has potential and can't wait for it to expand and update.
~Edit~ I just thought of something else, you could add an ability to the blaze armor where if you have the entire full set you are immune to fire/lava. That way you don't have to brew tons of fire resist potions.
~Edit#2~ After carefully reading the topic I saw that each armor piece acts like it has fire protection 1 on it, but I just want to point this out, I do not this fire protection includes lava, I am not sure though.

Fire protection does include lava, but I didn't think about maybe making the full set of armor make the player immune to all damage... That might be included in a future update (not sure about the balance of it, not sure if the armor should still take the damage, etc.)!
If this updated to 1.2.3 I would just delete my current nether just to get these ores. When are you planning on updating the mod? I also thought of maybe some kind of blaze mask that make lava transparent like water.
Blaze mask crafting idea:
= blaze rod = blaze helmet :glass = glass = water bucket

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm considering making this two different mods, actually. One would just keep the main features shown in the Reddit post, and one would be an expansion to it with all the different features suggested by others. What would y'all think about that?
Also, I have updated the mod for 1.2.3! Several bugs have been fixed, including:
Crashing when breaking gravel and logs with fist
(Hopefully) the random crashes when near Nether Mushrooms
Other random stuff that I spotted when retyping all of the code
For some reason the latest update is instantly crashing my minecraft. I only have modloader, and better nether. The download section says that version 1.1 of the mod is for minecraft version 1.2.3 but it doesn't seem to work.

Hmm, it works for me. Can you give me a crash report?
I'm unable to mine blaze ore with either of the pickaxes you added. The ore acts like they aren't a strong enough material. (Like trying to mine iron ore with a wood pickaxe.) It takes forever to break, and doesn't drop anything.
It could be a mod conflict, I'm using about 50 mods at the moment, I don't have anything that alters tools, and only Millenaire adds others. I'm unwilling to unload Millenaire and kill off my villages to test it, but if anyone else is using both, could you chime in and say whether or not mining the blaze ore works for you?
For now I'm just using NEI to add all the blaze ore I break as a workaround.
Edit:
Also, exactly just how rare is the Essence of the Nether? I can't find any using X-Ray, flight, and Optifine extended view distance, and I traveled far enough to break an Unbreakable V Blaze Pickaxe... I sincerely doubt anyone could have searched as large an area as I did without cheating. I found 4 Nether Fortresses.....

Yes, the pickaxes are bugged. This will be fixed in the next version. Sorry about that. :/
I also think the Essence of the Nether is too rare. I'll increase the generation in the next version, as well.
EDIT:
Version 1.1.1 is released! Download and changelog in the main post.
Hey, great mod! I remember seeing this a while back in the forums, glad it's looking this good. I was wondering if it would be alright if I did a mod spotlight on this one? For my new, Movie-Studio themed Mod Showcase series.

If not, whateva, but keep up the great work!
Sure, feel free to make videos featuring this mod! Would you like me to add it to the main post?
