This would be interesting to see in the Up-To-Date Minecraft.
Especially with the books... you would be able to tell which is which without mousing over.
Problem with that is you would have to create a custom renderer for each item and armour. It would likely start falling apart on the latter and will also be less efficient than byte code manipulation (which is a bit harder).
I will have the source code publicly available when I am done if you did want to know how it works.

What will happen with enchantments added by other mods? For example, RedPower adds two, Vorpal and Disjunction.
I would imagine it would be unreasonable (and annoying) to design new glow effects for unique instances like this, so will they just use the standard purple glow?

Epic! What happens if you have multiple enchantments? And does this work when mobs are holding the weapons?
