I saw this mod and I was like "eh, lets check it out" and then I jizzed over the walls and the floor and the ceiling. I have waited so long for a mod like this. A few people came close, but none were focused enough on the realism. If I might make a suggestion? I like almost EVERYTHING you've done here, but I think that the prospecting might not fit the play style of most minecrafters. So, instead, I would like to suggest an alternative: hiding ore blocks (making them look like any other block, even dropping their native rock block, eg. iron ore would look like stone and drop a stone block, not an iron ore block.) The player then would have to mine the most basic of ores, which are visible to the naked eye (ones that appear as native elements, in large chunks). As the player mines more and more of these ores, they become more adept at spotting ores in rocks. Soon, all of the ores are visible to them. Another thing, I'm not sure if you've implemented this, but what about confining ores to spawn solely in the rock-types in which they are found in real life. Diamonds would be found in a mafic, igneous rock, to emulate kimberlite, and I know for a fact that almost all lapis lazuli deposits are in marble. This would allow players to seek out ores based on the location they are in, rather than a shot in the dark, as it is now.You shouldn't worry about altering the spawn levels of the ores, it's not entirely realistic anyway, what with upthrust and folding.
Actually realistic spawning IS already implemented. I had forgotten to add Lapis Lazuli in previous versions, but that is now remedied and as you mentioned, it spawns only in Marble. Serpentine only spawns in Olivine, which itself only spawns in Gabbro. Most of the spawns should actually be fairly realistic in their representation.
More ideas you say? Why not have igneous intrusions? Rocks such as marble, slate and such could spawn as intrusions in the more common rocks which they metamorphosis from. Marble, a relatively rarer rock, could spawn as pillars and spikes (intrusions) in limestone. Slate could spawn in shale.Another idea: (which might take awhile =P) is to make the rocks have two different textures each(for sedimentary rocks), like wood blocks. The tops and bottoms could have the flat texture and the sides could have the layers. this would make it look more realistic.EDIT: If you're really looking for a challenge, chests use a different block model than the basic stone or dirt block. You could alter the sedimentary block model to look like a rough-edged layered rock. This would make caves look more rocky.
I like the intrusions idea, I may actually take a look at doing that at some point. As far as the top and side textures being different, I'd love to do that, and implementing it wouldn't be too terribly difficult, but textures are the most difficult part of modding for a programmer like myself. I just spent 2 hours or so finding textures for all of the rocks and ores that were missing them, and I'm currently making item textures(its incredibly boring). So that might be something for the future, but not something that I want to add right now. I *may* do something like stalactites and stalagmites later to help make the caves look better. we shall see.

For the next few days, I'm incredibly busy with my own project, but after that I might be able to help you out. I'm a beginner programmer, but I've always had a talent for art. If you still need help after thursday (or so) I might be able to give you a hand.

your OP doesn't actually list any new ores, other than a bit of a hint at cinnabar when you talk about redstone.

Alpha 4 is now out. A lot of work was done to make the mod fully playable. Unless I missed something, the mod should be in perfect working order as far as vanilla is concerned. There are still more item textures to be made and as well as recipes and the like, but the mod should no longer interrupt any function of vanilla play. Ores are now IC2 compatible.
Granite should spawn much farther down. Granite is intrusive, and the large grains are formed because the magma has a very long time to cool and for the crystals to grow. Also, I think the proper image of the white granite would be this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Granite_Yosemite_P1160483.jpg

Granite is intrusive yes, but you are neglecting to take into account tectonics. There are plenty of cases of above ground Granite. With that said, I wanted the player to be able to have access to every type of rock layer with ease. My biomes may not make 100% sense in comparison to RL because I'm trying to be mindful of balance and progression.
To your other question, yes the mod is only 1.00 comaptible right now. I'm not planning to update it until Forge and the other majors (IC2, RP2, BC2) are updated. 1.1 doesn't really add anything interesting besides wool regrowth so I'm in no big hurry.
i see, i see... I guess.. you COULD swing the granite caves...
anyway, i found an old 1.0.0 file, so i was able to download your mod. I found myself in a taiga-like area with a lot of shale. I have no idea how to get coal and shale won't make a furnace so I can't make charcoal :sad.gif:
All stone can be transformed into cobblestone by simply placing it in your crafting table. it converts at a 1 to 1 ratio so all cobble recipes will work. Also you can turn any stone into smooth stone by cooking it in a furnace.
Edit: I recommend making a prospecting pick and looking for Bituminous coal or Lignite. Alternatively, get a crap ton of sticks and use them as fuel and make charcoal.

I found some white granite which I was able to convert into cobble, but my shale wouldn't craft.

I'll have to take a look at that the next time that I'm in Eclipse. I thought about Corundum actually. We'll see. Jet IS a type of coal, but I believe I read somewhere about it being inefficient or something. I can't remember exactly why I chose not to classify it as a coal.
tunnelled deeper. Found a pale whitish rock. This doesn't craft into cobble stone, nor does it have a name. when I mouse-over it, a vertical black line appears, as the border to where there might have been a name.
EDIT: based on the look of my biome and the shale I found I'm assuming I'm in the taiga 3 biome. This nameless rock would then be rocksalt.
I don't quite understand how the prospecting works. I found an area where there are traces of two different types of coal and borax, but i can't seem to GET any. Is there something special I have to do?

I need to setup a wiki or have someone do it for me lol, I'm bad at documenting things. Prospecting basically scans a large area around where you clicked and tells you what kinds of ore are spotted. It does not give you a direction obviously, that's up to the player to narrow it down. If I remember correctly I set the number to check in a 25x25x25 cube around the block that you clicked on. You'll need to start doing exploratory mining to find the actual vein of ore.
Ohey, someone finally decided to make a geologicly accurate mod! I love the content you've added, but unfortunately the textures don't fit the default theme at all. However, I've been playing around with making concept textures for minecraft ideas I've had, and I'd be happy to make you some improved textures, if you want.
This will be my final post for the night as I'm headed to bed.
@Delocuro - Texture replacements are absolutely welcome and I'll be happy to include your modified textures in the OP if you make your own version. That goes for everyone actually. I know that I'm not an artist and I'm fine with that!
@Everyone Else - If you experience any bugs please post them here so that I can add them to my buglist. This is still in Alpha for a reason. The more bugs you report today, the less everyone else has to deal with tomorrow!
Sprite artist here. I'd love to help you with the sprites and textures for your mod- I've been looking for a mod like this for some time. I can give you some examples of my work if you'd like. Anyway let me know if you still need someone.

Malachite is sometimes used as a copper ore and jets are actually a type of coal.
Also, you could add corundum (Al2O3) which is what rubies and sapphires form from. It's pretty common, I think too.

Admittedly, I did not look into it very much, but what advantage would that have?
