You can also make various types of volcanoes!
Like Composite Volcanoes!
By the way I've heard lots of people talk about volcanoes inside minecraft, but you're the first one to actually make one (I think). Congratulations!
Tropicraft technically has volcanoes, though not in their current release I think (I've not used it, someone fill me in.) And definitely not with the same detailed mechanics this mod has set up.
I think I'll install this once the SMP is up and running. Looking forward to it.
Suggestions:
You could do shield type volcanoes that just spew out lava which hardens into cobbles over time and obsidian where it meets water.
And you could add a final stage of 'dormant' to volcanoes where all the lava becomes cobble/stone/obsidian/dirt with a low % chance of it becoming active again. Maybe make dormant volcanoes and old lava flows more conducive to growing plants.
Had my first volcano spawn the other day, been enjoying it ever since :smile.gif: Discovered that I haddnt added the .zip to the mods folder, but instead the contents of the .zip, thats why nothing was working - doh!
Not the best living relatively close to it in a tree house however, and it seems to be a fairly active one, but my tree house is still standing after being hit with several blocks & a couple of unfortunate lava incidents.
Funnily enough I think a lava block landed on a tall pine tree nearby and disintegrated it, leaving a large tower of cobblestone once Id poured water over it, after a while I came back to it, cracked it open to find the inside hollowed out and cooled down, and a perfect little sheltered living area inside, Ill live there when everything else burns to the ground :biggrin.gif:
Was standing outside just before as well, when some obsidian exploded nearby, leaving a huge hole only 2-3 blocks away from me and throwing me back (lucky I had some armour on and didnt loose a whole lot of health) Scared the bajezus out of me though, now you see the ground, now you dont! Epic moments like this are possible with such a great mod and I love how dynamic it makes the area:)
I have some thoughts on improvements, not sure how much your into programming but none of it should be too complex...
*Edit* First one should be easy - a properties file to control the general properties of the volcanoes better? ie the eruption frequency and max/min spread possible, size of core, chance of obsidian block exploding etc etc
My main idea however is about the way the volcano develops, I know youve had a lot of people criticise the way it forms, with all the holes and it does look somewhat messy, I dont think it would be too hard to fix and would result in a much smoother beast.
One approach would be to check below the erupted block where it initially lands, and if theres a block under it, check below that, and so on, instantly moving the erupted block to the nearest air block below its initial landing. The depth to search could only be 2-5, but I think youd see a noticeable improvement in the way it forms, it would be a lot more 'solid' and natural looking in the end, with all those gaps being filled in. Of course there would probably always still be some holes forming that way too, it wouldnt have to perfectly check and fill every air space, but that would just add to it as well IMO.
Improving even further, you could have the blocks radiating out from central core slowly climb upwards. The speed at which they climb would depend on how close they are to the central circle of lava.
Once a vertical block moves up to a given height it stops of course (different shape for each volcano, leading to them all being random of course), and the growth no longer continues for that particular part. You could also think about what happens to the space under the terrain moving upwards, it could randomly be left as air blocks or be replaced with lava, leaving a larger area of lava around the outside, and upwards in the walls of the volcano. Again the randomness of holes appearing in the volcano could be a benefit here, leaving sections of lava to leak out onto the outer wall or inwards making lava-falls back down into the core. The exploding obsidian would work well here too, imagine having a house at the base of the volcano and then a bit of obsidian explodes up higher, releasing a large amount of lava once contained in the wall of the volcano :smile.gif:
A lot of this would work simply with the nature of the mod, its already very dynamic and random, making the sides of the volcano develop this way would make a nicer looking and more formed volcano, where these kinds of things could happen mostly naturally without the need for programming events or anything messy etc.
This could then lead onto other things, like the once the volcano has been growing for a long time and has mostly finished, it could go dormant (as the current version does), and harden over with cobblestone and cool up. --This would be a great chance to mine that diamond. But the volcano would come alive again randomly at some point and start erupting again (hopefully when your not inside mining or making a nice volcano house in the centre etc :wink.gif: )
Ive also noticed with one volcano I spawned that I could cover the top over with water and turn it all to cobblestone, blocking the erupting blocks completely. Pretty sure this happened because the core had spawned on the side of a mountain and wasnt flat, allowing it to be cooled over and blocked up, whereas the flat ones clear themselves. It would probably be somewhat complex depending on how you approach it, but you could somehow work out if the core is being covered, and if its happened for a given amount of time, send a bunch of super explosive obsidian blocks up to blow though the cover (hopefully a couple of these wouldnt hit the blockage and end up flying out into the surrounding landscape :wink.gif:
--Dont block over the volcano kids, youll feel its wrath otherwise :smile.gif:
Sorry if Ive gone on a bit, I do that sometimes, Im just loving this mod for what it is, and the potential it has to go further :smile.gif:

*large quantity of text

Wow, I think I can redo the checking part a bit, maybe also allow for check upwards, which will cause an explosion.
Also, sorry if I'm not covering the entire reply, it's just tons of text :tongue.gif:
Hey, is it possible that you could code this better so that when a volcano spawns, it doesn't look like a pile of crap with lava in the middle. if you could, that would be amazing. I'm not meaning to be a douche or anything.

Apparently the new update changes the core classes of the Items, I must update the Volcano Spawner. But you can just disable the volcano spawner, I haven't tested if it works then though :/

Searching? If the text "Beware..." appears, you've found one :smile.gif:
Though, just walking away when the text appear will disallow the volcano to get in action :/

Lol no worries, just figured Id add my 2c on some thoughts Id had while playing.
And exactly how am I supposed to do that?
I get the feeling Night_Blade13 was mocking my long drawn out comment and was just being a troll in general...
That'll be awesome if you did!
I don't know sorry if i came across mean. my friend was complaining that the volcanoes looked ghetto. sorry
You are wrong about that i was just suggesting that if there was a way, would he please do it.
I don't think I need to do anything with it either, since it has no blocks and you can remove the spawner and make it compatible with everything.
Edit: I'll add a version for ModLoader only, not ModLoaderMp(as it's useless for now) :smile.gif:
its been updated how long till out?
Although, I think you can play the mod with 1.1 alreadyIt seems you cannot, I'll fix that immediately!I'm really sorry, MCP is giving me errors so there's not much I can do :sad.gif:
