I have to concur: When I've been on multiplayer servers with Twilight Forest and any mod that allows for flight (so far, most ALL of them have involved flight in some form), as soon as I manage to achieve flight, the challenge factor takes a nose-dive. It becomes a routine to skip from tree to tree, listen for spiders, and hunt down tree dungeons in the hopes of getting magical saplings -- and once I get that Miner Tree Sapling, I'm rolling in resources.
My personal preference: Start in the forest. No access to the overworld, or other dimensions, until after reaching a certain point in the forest.
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?

That WOULD be pretty cool! The closest we've gotten to that experience (on a multiplayer game that had Twilight Forest as part of a larger modpack) was that as a bit of a challenge, two of us opted to head out quite some distance, make a portal to Twilight Forest, then pop through without any equipment to start from scratch.
Since portals had already been established by other players, we weren't guaranteed to have a nice comfy "starting" zone. Instead, we popped right into a Dark Forest. This did not go well. Fortunately, we weren't playing Hardcore.
After a few attempts that involved running nearly blindly in a certain direction while pursued by angry red-eyed wolves, and occasionally falling into a chasm (so many open caves and chasms in that world!), we finally managed to get to an area where nothing was immediately trying to kill us. (Well, aside from the occasional zombie to wander in from a nearby cave we hadn't sealed off or lit up yet, but that was relatively easy to manage.)
Starting off in Twilight Forest is a very different experience (even without the crazy Dark Forest run to start it off). Some things we would take for granted as being fairly easily accessible in the Overworld are not quite so readily found in the Twilight Forest, but in a way it was a lot less of a hassle for multiplayer when we didn't have to worry about day/night cycles, or nagging other players on TeamSpeak or chat to "please find a bed" while we were struggling to secure an initial base, or exploring. The only really rocky part was that in multiplayer, the "progression" aspect of Twilight Forest can be a bit of a hassle, since only ONE person can kill a hydra at a time (for instance), and it can be quite some distance you have to explore before you find another fire swamp (with a hydra that somebody else hasn't yet beat you to). Fortunately, that can be switched off in the config, but any time we've played Twilight Forest in a multiplayer modpack, our host hasn't bothered to turn it off.
I didn't try it myself, but I seem to recall that we couldn't create a portal to the Nether from the Twilight Forest (or even if we could, the Nether Portal certainly wouldn't point BACK to the Twilight Forest), so we hit a bit of a roadblock in terms of trying to build anything that required materials from the Nether. And, of course, there would be no Strongholds to get to the End, so at a certain point you'd need to get back to the Overworld to progress further.
Hmm. Maybe as a server challenge setup, the solution would be to have a savegame that encases the starting spawn area in a bedrock barricade, with a Twilight Forest portal in the middle. I think there's a config option to prevent player creation of Twilight Forest portals. There could be an OP-created portal back to the Overworld to continue normal play, but i wonder if there'd be some way to make a lock that could only be opened to enter this area if one acquires each of the big boss trophies first? I think something could be done in 1.8 or 1.9 with Command Blocks and conditions, but I'm not sure if that functionality exists in 1.7.10.
Or ... you just agree, as a premise for the multiplayer server game, that nobody gets to go back to the Overworld until each of the trophies has been collected, and once they have, the server OP changes the config file to allow for player-created Twilight Pools, and restarts the game so people can go back and forth to their hearts' content from that point on.

I was thinking of "Just have the server start you in a TF clearing" type of thing. Or, at spawn in the overworld, have the admin set up a portal to the forest.

Yea, the answer is that the "progression item" generally is something that can be picked up by multiple people. Or, you can go to the next 2Kx2K zone and try again (but that is more of a pain on a big server)

Nope, you can't get to the nether from the forest. Darn. I wonder if there's any place in the forest where you could find nether materials, or even make a nether material generator. Hmm. Maybe some mad-scientist tower ...

Or, you know, for a small (4 person) server, have a premade "exit" at the top of the minighast tower (that's where the players agreed on; I was thinking of a Lich tower, but they had another choice).
With only one minighast tower near spawn, it works pretty well. In our case, it's mystcraft link books in a chest just below the battle point.

Do you mean, a world gen option to start in the twilight forest?
NIce thing indeed(do modded dimensions only work if you create a portal from the overworld(the ol' n' true)? if yes, then it's even less work. or added bonus :P)! And later when you get diamond, well, switching habits
The Twilight Portal makes two checks. If you aren't already in the Forest, it takes you there. If you ARE already in the Forest, it takes you to the Overworld. Not sure if you can enter from other dimensions. Most other mod-added dimensions can only be accessed via the Overworld.
I'm super curious to see what Benimatic has in store for this mod's next update, By the changelog and Github posts going on for the past few months, I'd say the next update will be a whopper!
I would also like that the giants wouldn't have the same texture as the player. A big Guybrush Threepwood just isn't very intimidating, sorry
And a cloud cottage full of giant gas-masked soldiers looks unnatural, even in a Time of Legends.

You want a farm, you grab a hoe. You want a boat, you grab some wood. You want a fireplace, you grab A FLAMING HELL-BOULDER BECAUSE THAT'S HOW MINECRAFTERS ROLL!!!
What? It is first time I hear of that mod, and I've already asked all questions I had, even before it was mentioned.
I can't find any information about it, unless someone lend me half a year of free time to learn Java and read the answer from Forge code.
If you want details, ask Lex or cpw. Right now, I'm not interested in 1.9, or 1.8, or anything inbetween.

Just as a note, McJty has pushed some code to Forge that might help with the dimension adding issue, as he has a tech based Mystcraft-style mod that kind of needed that fix to update.
All I know is that as more mods get added to the list of craziness that is these two versions of Minecraft, I can finally finish packs that I've been working on for a good year now without worrying about what the next update will break.

If I have some good news, and it's related to something I love, I try to share it if I can. Twilight Forest is one of my favorite mods, and it'd be sad if something stupid that Mojang did kept the mod from continuing to grow and possibly update to new versions of the vanilla game.
That said, if Twilight Forest stayed in 1.7.10 forever, I wouldn't mind either. I have MultiMC for just such occasions.

um, its been like nearly a year now and no new updates have been posted, so when approximatly will he update the mod?

Any word of when this legendary mod will be updated or should we the community work updating it?
Until someone ports this legendary mod I am leaving the minecraft scene. http://www.cosc.canterbury.ac.nz/greg.ewing/minecraft/mods/ArchitectureCraft/#mozTocId598776 I have watched too many legendary mods die and carpenters blocks sudden fallout out of mainstream made me cry. I realize the source is messy but some of the best mods from 1.6.4 and 1.7.10 were.
It sounds as though things are cranking away behind the scenes.
Did you read the forum section rules before posting?

This. So much this. I'm really hoping that mods skip 1.8 straight into 1.9 because of that.
Currently, TF is impossible on 1.9.
And a cloud cottage full of giant gas-masked soldiers looks unnatural, even in a Time of Legends.
You can create new dimensions with 1.9? I can't find confirmation myself. Please link your sources.
