- SPECIAL HOLIDAY THEMES AND MOBS ARE ONLY PRESENT DURING SELECT HOLIDAY MONTHS (FEBRUARY, JULY, OCTOBER, DECEMBER).
- THE MAC AND SERVER VERSIONS ARE IN WIP STATUS.
Firstly, to clarify, what is the Real Life Seasons Mod?
- Seasonally rotating launcher for texture packs.
- Open source for individual customization.
- Launcher-based, so no possibility of any type of conflict with other mods.
Some notes:
- The launcher is written in simple Windows batch language, shell script for Linux. I opted for this in an effort to make it easier for novices to handle. I am currently working on a Mac version and hope to have it completed within one to two weeks from this writing, though I'll have to be out of town for a week, so it might be more like mid-September at the latest.
- There are 8 texture packs included as an example, 4 seasonal and 4 holiday. These do incorporate the works of some other authors and permission has been granted in all circumstances. You may use these packs if you like them, but you can also feel free to make your own. My biggest request is that you credit me and most importantly that you tell me, not for permission, but because I'm interested in seeing other people expand on my idea.
- There is a custom pack builder tool included that can be used to incorporate any texture pack in to the seasonal rotator.
Examples of practical application: Media Showcase*
(Can take a few seconds to load.)
Currently not available for Mac platform.
The Mac launcher is currently in development and should be finished around mid-September. Sorry for the delay and thanks for your patience.
Instructions for configuring and running:
1. Extract the Launcher folder for the intended pack and operating system from the archive to any location on your computer. You can rename the folder and even take the files out and put them somewhere else so long as all of the contents remain in the same location.
2. Run Launcher.exe* from the folder location (*or in Linux, Config-TERMINAL-.sh run in terminal; Launcher.sh will be created). You may create a shortcut to the launcher if desired.
3. Follow the one-time configuration to set your pack to run in the proper hemisphere and date format. If you need to run this again, simply remove all files extracted from the archive and return to step 1.
4. The launcher will then read your system clock and place the correct texture pack in to your /.minecraft/texturepacks folder and then will automatically run Minecraft.
5. Once loaded, select the approptriate texture pack from the Mods and Texture Packs menu item. The texture pack will now rotate every time the launcher is run and will not need to be selected again from the menu unless the setting is manually changed to a different pack.
6. Play Minecraft.
Instructions for using custom texture packs:
1. Extract the CustomRealLifeSeasons Launcher folder for the intended operating system from the archive to any location on your computer. You can rename the folder and even take the files out and put them somewhere else so long as all of the contents remain in the same location.
2. This pack contains the default Minecraft textures modified for seasonal rotation. If you wish to use a custom texture pack for a given season*, simply copy that texture pack in to the \CustomTexturePacks folder, remove the season you wish to replace, and rename the intended texture pack to the appropriate file name, CustomSpring.zip, CustomSummer.zip, CustomFall.zip, or CustomWinter.zip (must keep this naming convention for the file to be interpreted by the launcher).
3. The launcher for this pack will autimatically pick up the packs you've inserted and conform them to the seasonal rotator format, then complete the rest of the rotation operation.
4. Continue from step 3. above.
*There is included in the \CustomTexturePacks folder a Paint.NET layered texture file with a masking layer set to common seasonal foliage textures. Feel free to use this as a method of converting your own texture packs to seasons.
Calendars: (inverted for southern hemisphere*)
Custom Real Life Seasons A Brave New World
Jan - Winter Season Jan - Winter Season
Feb - Winter Season Feb - Spring Holiday
Mar - Spring Season Mar - Spring Season
Apr - Spring Season Apr - Spring Season
May - Spring Season May - Summer Season
Jun - Summer Season Jun - Summer Season
Jul - Summer Season Jul - Summer Holiday
Aug - Summer Season Aug - Summer Season
Sep - Fall Season Sep - Fall Season
Oct - Fall Season Oct - Fall Holiday
Nov - Fall Season Nov - Fall Season
Dec - Winter Season Dec - Winter Holiday
*I'm fairly clueless about holidays in other parts of the world. Please enlighten me if you have information to share.
Additional Notes:
-(Windows) If you're one of the unlucky few that has trouble with the Java VM error (I do), I've included an error fix in the archive. Just extract the contents in to the same folder as your Launcher.exe and it should run fine. Let me know if it doesn't.
-Minecraft must be installed in the default location (%appdata% for windows, $home for Linux) for the launcher to work properly. If you run Minecraft from another location such as a USB device or a different folder location, the launcher will still use the default folder and will fail to provide the expected result. Having a unconventional drive letter will not, however, cause the launcher to fail and should be of no concern.
Open Source:
-Creating custom versions of my launcher is not only allowed, I also encourage it. All I ask is that you credit me by providing a link to my work and notify me with a link to your work because I'm interested in seeing how other people expand on my idea. Once notification has been made and a link has been sent, you may consider permission automatically granted and need not wait for a response. I'm interested in following community activity and like to see your ideas. You may contact me via private message on the Minecraft Forums or Planet Minecraft where my name will always be TQuin. You may also send a message through my website at Minecrafties.com under the questions/comments heading or you can send an email to [email protected]

This has been previously posted under the texture packs section, but I've always felt it should be listed in the mods section because they texture packs included are only to give an example of something you can do with this concept.
Didn't someone else make the same thing? Without an .exe? <.<
You're probably thinking of Nandonalt's mod, which is totally different. Nandonalt's seasons mod rotates seasons in-game every 7 in-game days. My launcher actually checks your system calendar when you start the game and substitutes the appropriate texture pack, thus the term real life.
You might also be thinking of the quandary rotator, which was also a launcher, but it was built in java rather than an executable. Some people have had trouble with the Quandary rotator and using newer versions of Minecraft, more specifically beta since the Quandary rotator was built back in Alpha. Also, last I checked, the quandary rotator is no longer updated ever since the Minecraft update allowing for texture packs. The Quandary rotator actually injected the texture packs permanently in to minecraft.jar where my launcher simply places them in to the /texturepacks folder.
ohhh! I love your winter trees.. you should remove tall grass when winter, and make crops die.
Thanks. I worked very hard to get those trees just so. The tall grass is actually shortened substantially, more than 50%. The crops, on the other hand.. well, I just can't do without my golden wheat.

MORE COMMENTS! I'm a feedback *****. I'm also looking for someone to take an interest in making their own seasons pack that will run with a custom version of the launcher. I'll even build it for you if you're worried about being able.
This looks like a downgraded version of Nandonalts Season mod, he's got more distinct seasons, and just changing so that there are months with different seasons doesn't actually change the concept :wink.gif:. I'm more compelled to use The Season mod, as it does not require a new launcher, and i can use the texture packs that i want to. And the mobs (i'm not sure if the ones in the video are actually in the game) look really weird, land sharks, turtlepigs and stuff o.O? I'm a REALISTICnoob, so that kind of stuff doesn't suit me.
However, i feel like some people may like this, but having to use another launcher will probably put some people off aswell.
Actually, the odd mobs are only for the holidays, which are theme based. Now that July is over, it's back to cows and pigs.
Nandonalt's mod is nice and it works, but this is intended for people who would rather have a mod that is less invasive in terms of gameplay. Truth be told, they're not the same in any way. I'm of the camp that feels major game changes are best left to the devs. But if you prefer Nandonalt's approach, by all means use that instead. This mod isn't a replacement for that mod by any means and they're so different that they really can't be compared directly. All this mod does is automate switching texture packs based on the actual 12-month calendar.
Nandonalt is a great modder and my mod is retardedly more basic, but I planned it that way because I wanted inexperienced people to be able to use it for their own purposes.
To address the launcher, all it actually does is run the check on the date, replace the texture pack, and fire up the standard Minecraft launcher. If you have a custom setup you like to use such as something that backs up your worlds, just replace minecraft.exe with whatever you'd like to use. In addition, you can even edit the source to build a custom version of the launcher that can do whatever you want. The launcher is standard and is not impacted by Minecraft updates.
Talking out of both sides of my mouth, some of the best recent changes to the game have come about as a result of mod popularity. I would never try to discredit that for a second. I'm one of those people who simply doesn't like getting used to something that will be broken in the next update and may never be a permanent part of the official game. For other people like me, this approach is a little more comfortable.

THE PLOT THICKENS! Amazing prizes!!!
If a contest winner is selected before August 14th, the winner will also recieve the indie games Humble Bundle! The winner of the subcontest will also get a Humble Bundle.
hm, nice idea, but i want to use my favorite texturepacks :/
So go ahead. The launcher is very easy to modify and everything you need is included in the download. You can set the rotation to run any way you like.
This mod is awesome, simple, and easy to use! Also, customizing what textures are used is pretty easy too.
On that note, expect a custom launcher from me soon, as I just need to finish a couple of textures.

Looks very nice. :biggrin.gif:
But I already installed Nandonalt's Seasons mod. Plus, I can't think straight these days. Someday, I'll make sure to check back on this. For now, I'll just bookmark the page. :tongue.gif:
I read something about mobs being theme based. Did you also plan on something like the easter bunny or santa claus? I've been looking for something like this since Alpha. :tongue.gif:

Maybe on the next MC update.
Use both if you want. They're compatible. Some things wouldn't make the most sense in the world, but it's a game. Water that sits on top of the ground and runs forever doesn't make sense either.
The other holiday textures aren't planned, they're already in the pack. I didn't release anything until all holidays and seasons were complete in my example pack (the one included). The seasons have a standard set of mobs, pigs look like pigs, cows look like cows, but the holidays are all themed. The next holiday is in October and is the "Halloween" holiday. I don't want to give away the surprise, but I'll tell you the Summer "Vacation" Holiday pack that just ended in July had hermit sheep, land seacows, tutlepigs, rastapigmen, etc. You can expect the mobs and textures in the October pack to have a spooky/movies/tv/games theme.
Some people have gotten the impression that these custom mobs are in-game all the time, but they're only available at special times during the year. Here's a copy of the scheduled calendar. As you'll notice it's summer now. Fall will start next month, and then the Fall Holiday will start after that.
Calendar system for the compiled version(inverted if you're southern hemisphere*):
Jan - Winter Season
Feb - Spring Holiday
Mar - Spring Season
Apr - Spring Season
May - Summer Season
Jun - Summer Season
Jul - Summer Holiday Aug - Summer Season
Sep - Fall Season
Oct - Fall Holiday
Nov - Fall Season
Dec - Winter Holiday

When the next update releases, I'll try very hard to get the update out a quick as possible. The slowest it's ever been was a day-and-a-half after the update, and that's only because I was travelling and there was a lot of content added. I have content borrowing agreements with many texture artists, so I can drop in filler if I need to get the update out quickly. I caught hell for that in the Texture Packs thread, but I've got permissions for everything I use and the pack is just a proof of concept for the seasons, so they can deal. You don't have time for things like elitism and purity when you're managing a mod of this breadth. The mod is simple enough, but when an update comes out and you've got to come up with some kind of unique content for 8 different packs that are only included to serve as a proof of concept, you just work as quickly as you can and don't sweat the small stuff. Talking out of both sides of my mouth, it's a proof of concept, but I want it to look nice, so I usually bust my ass trying to tweak it out just right.
Seems neat, I love some of the textures you showed in the video. The only problem I have with it is that I doubt I'll be using this mod or even playing minecraft to see past fall. Is there a easy way to set the time that it changes seasons?
I'm currently running Linux Distro Ubuntu 11.04 and would love to be able to use this.. =/
Would you like to help me rewrite the launcher? I currently don't have a Linux system up is the problem, but I'm about to rebuild my fileserver and might be able to move forward after that if you'd like to be of assistance.

Same thing for Macs with a bash script, but you couldn't pay me to own a Mac, so I'll have to get a loaner from a friend. That will take more time.
