Does it disturb anyone else that you take a slime's balls when you kill it?
Or that it only has one ( OR ANY ) balls?
Also, the 24-spaces is a requirement for all mobs; none of them spawn within 24 blocks of you. It's hard-coded into the game, so it can't be changed easily, if at all, without the source code.
I'll be testing the mod shortly (I currently only have a single sticky piston because of the excessively-elusive slimes) and I'll edit this post with the results and my opinion.
Testing over. Result:
The "Surface Slimes" version is the only version I could get to work, but it was more than excellent. I've uploaded some images to demonstrate the effect.
Going back, I have no idea why the slime spawner or the other version would not work; I even attempted using the "slime spawner" and "easier slimes" ('surface slimes' again, as the folder in the zip reads) version in conjunction, as you explicitly stated the spawner requires. I also tried every combination I could think of to no avail. I updated specifically to test this mod, so it's a clean run, and it was the second mod I installed (after ModLoader); furthermore, the META-INF folder has been deleted properly prior to play. Did I miss anything?
Moving on:
In ten minutes of slime-hunting, I acquired 30 slimeballs, averaging 3 per minute. That's fantastic, considering I had managed to get A SINGLE SLIMEBALL on a world I've been playing for at least three weeks; they even spawn as often as other mobs; not rare or overly-abundant. For me, their normalcy is important because slimes are usually a rather ordinary and common enemy in games, so I wasn't expecting anything less. I can't imagine why Mojang didn't fix the slime spawn areas (unless they were intended to be fifty times rarer than diamonds). Good job to you and Scompy.
I took the chance to check the spawning difference between the "peaceful" and "normal" difficulties and found that the spawn rates are the same. Don't get me wrong; I LOVE this mod, but I would suggesting finding what part of the code makes them spawn on peaceful difficulty and subsequently change it. You could then produce a version for the specific purpose of not spawning slimes on peaceful while also increasing their spawn rate and locations significantly on other difficulties. I suggest this because I play in "creative mode" (peaceful) as much as I do in normal or hard and I would hate to be nudged off the 50-block high porch of my house-on-stilts. In any case, I would download an Anti-Slime Peaceful version.
The first slime I found right before I was ambushed by four skeleton archers from over the nearby hill. They were no match for my supreme agility, which is why so many arrows litter the beach.
These guys were originally a "huge" slime, but I cut them down enough that they couldn't hurt me so I could grab a picture before I led them into a lake and watched them drown. Then, I took their slimey balls, because they might be useful later. Trust me. I have a feeling about this.
They jumped on my head! I couldn't find any slimes after the last swarm, so I wandered into a cave after hearing the characteristic flopping and met a dead end. When I left, two "big" slimes jumped on me from over the cave's opening and I barely escaped. The only weapon I could scramble to defend myself with was my torch, which was unluckily directly beside my sword.
Thank you so for much for the extensive review. I had been having some problems with the mob spawner because of slimes spawning requirements and I am looking for a way to fix it. The reason being, they not only need high light value to spawn, but they also need the player to be 24 blocks away, its crazy I know.
The Easier slimes mod does work like you said and its not overkill which is perfect. As for removing slimes from peaceful, I can definitely do that, It is very simple to do and I will have it up shortly.
Thank you once again, people like you make a modders job a lot easier and more enjoyable!
Adib, like it says, they are modloader compatible. The point of this mod is to allow slimes to spawn on the surface, with different variations, so that you can get slime balls a lot easier. I can however make them spawn in the dark or in a mob spawner that is generated by the world terrain generator instead of having it crafted. Just let me know either in a pm or reply here with more info and Ill see what I can do.
i want it like you have but not on surface spawns, could you do that for me?
thanks!
"Easier Slimes - Allows slimes to spawn on the surface. Also a higher chance of the chunk to be slime spawning friendly chunk. (Orinally a 1 in 10 chance without the mod)"
this without the surface spawn
So you want the normal slime spawning conditions (levels 16 and below) but along with the higher chance of it being a slime friendly chunk, yep, thats no problem :smile.gif:
WOOW. Thanks for this AMAZING mod. Now I can get slime balls legitly.
Anyways, I have a few things to say. When I first downloaded this mod, I couldn't find any slimes. Then a couple minutes later, I saw one and was happy. Then more and more showed up. Then more! It got to the point that there were too many and they seemed like the only things spawning. And I only downloaded the original one, not the one that makes it even easier to find them. I think that you should have a version where it is less common. That would be really great!
Thanks for downloading the mod, sometimes they can become overwelming due to the randomness, I am thinking of doing a max spawnable at a time to it doesnt take over, shouldn't be to hard I dont think :tongue.gif:

Alright that's a reasonable fix. At most times, the number of the slimes that spawn would be around 40ish so I would say around half that number or maybe even less. It would be so much better if slimes were rarer especially since they are allowed to be on surface

Can easily be done :smile.gif: Thanks everyone for the input, Ill do all the updates tomorrow so for now, just live and I'll post when updated.
Just found this MOD. Interesting concept and I think most people would agree that the vanilla slime system doesn't work now that sticky pistons have been introduced. Couple that with another mod that has slime boots + vest and slime cheating becomes more of a probability unless slimes are made to spawn more frequently and over a greater area.
Your mod addresses this imbalance and from what I'm reading in this thread, perhaps more than is necessary but as I haven't tried it yet I'll reserve my judgement on that score.
I am wondering however about your saddle. Wondering whether it is the same as the existing saddle? I imagine there are 2 lines of thought with this. On the one hand having 2 saddles seems like overkill, but on the other hand, riding a pig off a cliff is meant to be a difficult achievement and being able to craft a saddle to do that takes away from said difficulty.
Then again, minecraft is about making choices and if your saddle is the same then its up to the player how they go about reaching an achievement. Having said this my conclusion is that having 2 saddle isn't necessary, but either way works for me.
Oh, and well done on addressing a glaring problem with your innovative solution. The only thing I can think of that could be changed is having a way to alter the spawn rate if its too high. Then again, perhaps thinking up new uses for slime would solve that problem.
One I can think of is being able to craft slime balls into slime pads similar to snow on the ground. Obviously this would slow down any mobs that walk over it {including the player} and would be used in making traps. Just a thought.
I will be doing everything everyone suggested, or just doing a properties file, I think it would be a lot easier and would decrease the number of files people to download and the mod will be more enjoyable since its more dynamic and can better fit their needs.
Spaman, thank you for the nice review, I think :tongue.gif: But there is only one saddle, its the same saddle, I havent gotten it to work and place on it the slime yet but I will eventually work on it. Its just for fun, nothing for achievements, if people want to use the custom crafting for the saddle to HELP them get the achievements its their own choice.
Thanks for the votes on the properties file, I think I will do it, won't have internet this weekend since I am going to my trailer but I will program it and upload the files, no changes in the links required :smile.gif:
Also, the mob spawner is being a pain, doing some workarounds will get it eventually, I like a challenge.
Or that it only has one ( OR ANY ) balls?

Make a version that adds rideable slimes, and makes harmless versions spawn on peaceful
