Notice:
Sorry about the lack of updates; I've been very busy with school (eighth grade) as well as other projects, but I've finally taken the time to update Granite per user request. Current release is version 1.7.1 for Minecraft Beta 1.8.1.
See the changelog (link down below) for more information on the changes.
Smelt gravel into Granite! Ever had piles and piles of gravel laying around? Rather than incinerating them, smelt them into granite!
Granite is a block with similar attributes to brick blocks, but it breaks more quickly. Combine your granite blocks with dyes to make colored granite, or simply re-smelt the granite to obtain Refined Granite - a block with much more endurance than regular granite.
If you come across a new type of tough rock while deep in a cave, you might have found Marble. Marble is a block similar to Refined Granite, but it can be found in caves and breaks slightly more easily.
Break you granite down into granite shards! These sharp shards can be turned into Granite-tipped arrows, which are more powerful than default arrows.
Latest Update....
Version 1.7 on 7/19/2011. Added a config file. It should be in ".minecraft/GraniteConfig.txt". You can now change Block ID's as well as choose textures.
Textures were provided by Opal Dragon75. :biggrin.gif:
Copy all the files from the "bin" folder in the downloaded zip file to your minecraft.jar file
You're done!
(If you're still confused, see readme.txt in the downloaded zip file.)
Features
Smelt all your extra gravel to make granite! Granite has an average damage resistance (for you modders out there, the default float for resistance is 6.0, and the hardness is 1.5).
Smelt your newly obtained granite into refined granite! (Much more damage-resistant)
Place dye around a piece of granite (NOT refined granite) to get colored granite!
Current supported dyes:
1. Red
2. Blue
3. Light Blue.
4. Pink
5. Green
Use your granite to make granite shards, which in turn can be used to create powerful granite-tipped arrows!
Find a strange rock deep in a cave? You've probably located Marble Ore. Smelt it to obtain a marble block!
Making a storage room? Use granite pots to make a space-efficient place for storing your items.
More coming soon :smile.gif:
Todo/Ideas
Colored Granite (using dyes) [IN PROGRESS!]
Granite Furnace and Granite Pots (chest) [IN PROGRESS! 50/100]
Granite half-steps and stairs.
Granite/marble hammer.

HUGE thanks to Hypuhrr for helping me with various things along the way.
More HUGE thanks to Opal Dragon75 for creating AND allowing me to use his textures, all free of charge! You're an awesome dude :smile.gif:
Thanks to cocooc11 for screenshots and other help :smile.gif:
Thanks to CDi-Fails for an awesome banner and the Adobe texture! :smile.gif:
Thanks to zlyfire and nekosune for helping debug some errors.

Refined granite is tougher than regular granite, but be careful! Breaking refined granite returns one regular granite block.
How to Make Colored Granite:
Simply place any of the displayed dyes inside the crafting grid with a piece of granite to obtain one piece of Colored granite!
How to Make Adobe Bricks:
How to Create Marble
Marble ore can be found in caves. It spawns at a rate slightly higher than gold.
How to Obtain Granite Shards:
Place a single piece of granite anywhere on a crafting grid to make four granite shards. Fun fact: One piece of granite can make you up to 16 arrows (4 shards x 4 arrows per craft = 16 arrows). That's 12 more than you would obtain if you obtained flint from the piece of gravel used to create the granite!
How to Use Granite Shards to Make Arrows
Got any spare granite? Craft yourself some Granite Arrows for a little more powerful shot. Granite-tipped arrows are much more powerful than regular arrows - two hits kills any passive mob, and three takes out a hostile one.
How to make a Granite Pot
Although large chests are great, you can't place them next to each other. And sometimes (at least in my case) I have more space than needed in a large chest when organizing my items. Instead, craft Granite Pots. These pots function as small chests, but can be placed next to each other and stacked.

Oh no wait "Smelt all your extra (and useless) gravel to make granite! (Average resistance)

Place dye around a piece of granite (NOT refined granite) to get colored granite!"
Ahhhh still useless

I'll have a try
More uses for granite later. Obviously tools and armor are out of the question, but I was thinking about possibly making a revamped furnace with granite :smile.gif:

.:I'm from Brazil and i don't speak English very well, so if i make any mistake please tell me :.
Added Marble blocks that spawn at around the same rate/levels as iron ore. Right now they're blocks, but I'll probably convert to Marble ore later on. Tell me what you think in the poll :smile.gif:
Edit: Marble has been converted to an ore in v.1.4.2. Smelt it to obtain the Marble block.
Definitely a neat mod, probably incompatible with the plethora(yes, plethora) of mods I use. Needless to say I'll give it a try. Now instead of useless gravel I can make walls or maybe a granite floor. Good for people like me that don't like houses made of one block.
Potential;
Furnace like you said, perhaps faster than the default furnace? Or perhaps same speed but fuel lasts longer? Something to make it stand out.
Slabs, stairs, (heavy)doors/trapdoors?
Granite Arrowheads-shorter range than flint, but deal more damage.
Granite Hammer/Mauls-Totally a Runescape inspired idea, adds a new weapon, basicly a big friggen hammer.
Shotput Minigame! Set up a Granite hoop somewhere and see if you can toss the heavy Granite ball into it! :happy.gif: Obviously this wouldn't be very difficult after awhile but it'd certainly make a nice outter-house decoration right?

If I were to add a furnace, it would probably be double-speed or something. Maybe a new GUI with multiple slots, so you could smelt a bunch of different stuff from one furnace.
Slabs and stairs are planned, but I didn't think of trap doors. *adds to list*
Arrowheads.....now THAT is an awesome idea. Although it might seem repetitive, (flint from gravel, granite arrowhead from smelted gravel), it would still be useful.
Granite hammer; if I were to make a hammer, I think I'd add a new type of marble (refined marble? since marble is supposedly stronger than granite) and have it be crafted that way.
Shotput minigame is a good idea; I'll look into it :smile.gif:.
Thanks for the ideas! I'l add them to the To-do list in the OP and add your name to the list of people who suggested stuff. Kudos :biggrin.gif:
Edit: I'm kinda confused with the compatibility problems; as of the latest version, the mod doesn't change any of Minecraft's core classes; it just adds new ones.
Would have liked to have tried it ... but oops ... block conflicts and no props file
I'm looking into changing the block ID's. Prior to 1.6, the ID's started at 2258. When 1.6 came, the mod broke because of them. I dunno why. I'm going to try to change them back later.
As for the props file, why would you need one as of now? Did you want to customize the block ID's?
Great mod! Some of the many uses are:
1 Get rid of crummy gravel
2 Make cool structures with granite, marble and adobe
3 Make a use out of something useless (gravel)
Keep up the good work! I'll send some screenshots of a house I'm making soon.
EDIT: You should make half slabs. That would be cool, considering you wanted to make something that uses half slabs, I.e. Countertops.
Also, I think the crafting recipe for colored granite should be two pieces of dye surrounding one piece of granite. That's way easier to make, but still takes a small amount of effort.

I could do just two pieces anywhere. We'll see :smile.gif:

I can't say I've honestly tried to use it with the mods I use xD As it is, I use so many that my basic home desktop can't run the game as fast as it usually is, so it's more or less a RAM issue. I did download the mod, so it's in my library of 'Mods I like to play around with'. With the arrows being repetitive, I don't really mean for it to like, replace the old arrows, but if you don't get flint, and you have a bunch of gravel, make them into arrowheads and have some heavy arrows. The old arrows would still be necessary if you want them for longrange battles. I like the furnace idea, finally won't have to stack multiple furnaces together to smelt glass, iron, gold, and all that at once. Glad I could contribute! :happy.gif:
(The halfblocks, I already see them being put ontop stone or wood halfblocks in kitchen settings, marble/granite countertops for the win.)
I'm glad you like the mod :smile.gif:
