Tank yee.
So, other people who have the mod see my cape, even if I don't have the mod installed? What if I see someone without the cape mod or without a cape uploaded?
yeah I guess you could create an account then upload textures and not download the mod. People would then see you with those textures but if they don't have the mod, they'll see you as you normal minecraft.net skin. Anyone who doesn't have the mod or any textures uploaded will appear as their uploaded minecraft.net skin.

I hate being a newb and not understanding this too well, but if I were to get a cape, wear it, and play SMP, other people can see it even if they don't have the mod installed?
They would need the mod to locate the new texture server, so no.
Where can I find already-made capes/ears? I hate pixel art and have no clue how to fully work this.
Well you don't really have to do any pixel art anymore cause of the increased resolutions. Infact, at those high resolutions it would be hard to pencil in each pixel.
People are welcome to post their skins and capes but I wouldn't go on the directory and start uploading their textures here for others to download just to get a gallery going. There's over 1500 active accounts so far so it would be kind of hard to email them all requesting they post their textures for others to use.
It's nice and all, but we need some central database or something to upload these too.
what do you mean by center database? Like for HD skins?
Wish I could find some artists to draw some up or at the least someone who knows how to grab google images and layer them on to a skin.
Do keep in mind though, with a resolution like 512x256, you could easily take an image from the internet and throw it on a skin. I've seen a lot of people with what appears to be their self image and just like a plain shirt with their favorite band or something on it which seems to be real popular of a skin to choose.
I mean like some sort of official website for this for people to host the skins on, so we have a central place to look for them.
There already are a few sites with a huge skin repository, but then again it's just skins and on default 64x32.
I can look into an upload gallery to put on the texture site but I don't think people would upload as many textures in the higher resolutions as getting an artist to make a few a day or so.
Would be great to find someone willing to do that.
can you make it so we can specify the URL, or even an on-PC location of the ear skins/capes? I play offline a LOT, so this mod won't work 50% of the time here. D:
Yeah I'm gonna do an Offline mode but wanted to release it with the Death Item update, or hold it off and do both with the Female support update but might have to do it as an update alone due to the popular demand.
Alright, I read the above comment about Death Items, but I still don't fully understand them. Can I get some more clarification as to what their use is whatsoever? Thanks.
Awesome mod, btw.

When they are implemented, whenever you die (SMP/SSP) you'll also drop whatever you have declared as your Death Item in addition to whatever you have on you. Vanilla minecraft has it so whenever Notch dies, he drops an apple right on his grave, so this will allow all users of this mod to benefit from a feature he implements just on himself, just like the capes.
It's either gonna be defining your own with no restrictions, or me creating a list of items to pick from and let's say if you pick Golden Apple, you'll drop 1, versus if you pick let's say Gunpowder, you'll drop more.
I wanted to keep a balance so I was either going to set a list of items and # it will drop and have you pick from it, or allow all items with no restrictions, or allow all items and put presets drop #s for certain items.
I'm liking the last one the best cause then users can drop whatever they want, but can't abuse this feature because items like Diamonds are hardcoded to drop only 1, while still allowing users to drop whatever they wanted.
The delay on the death item feature is caused by me not knowing a surefire way to obtain a User variable from the webserver without being in a Joomla session already. You may have noticed in your account settings on the webserver there is a field for "Death Item", well when you save that it saves it as a variable in your profile. When I went in to create a php script to return a deathitem based on which name it was called with (your name) I found that Joomla (the CMS the site runs on) will only allow the script to access these user variables when it's logged into a session which I didn't/can't get it to do via the mod in minecraft, so I have to find another way around.
I'll either create a second database that just contains usernames and death items so it can be easily accessed, or figure out the Session problem.
To keep you all up-to-date on my Todo list with this particular mod, here's what I gotta do:
Figured out & Implement smoother Timeout Function incase of server downtime
Figure out & implement fix that causes users to not be able to reconnect to an SMP server after an undetermined amount of connects/disconnects
Create & Implement Offline functionality
Fix & Implement Death Item Feature
Finish SMP Female support
Figure out & Implement fix that causes some 512x256 transparent capes to render with a black box if a certain % of the cape's resolution contains transparency.
added todo list page so you guys can see my work list and the priority of each item to get a better idea of how the progress of certain features of certain mods are coming along
Well it may just be impossible anyways to do, without the help of Mojang. But it would definitely be possible for Bukkit. Good luck with the death items. Would definitely be a cool little mod.

Nah I can do the female. I've had permission from KodaichiZero to use her Charlotte model and render code that is the basis for the female support that I can integrate it into the texture receiver.
god this format is horrible, there was something I was gonna say about the mod but this format completely threw me off so I'll post it when I remember.
Uploaded v1.8 that unfortunately only contains compatibility with Zombe's Mod Pack thanks to tanzanite
I was gonna do the offline mode too but I couldn't get it to work right at the moment, so I'm going to save it for 1.9 with the Death Item feature and hopefully some bug fixes.

Good to see it back... now i just have to design the skins.
Would need people to take pictures of or else it would just be pictures of myself that doesn't really prove it works on SMP.
