I do not get why people are so anni, oyed about a 5 SECOND wait for adf.ly. It is just 5 seconds from your life. Plus, it helps the modder who made the mod. As long as you only link to your content, I say adf.ly it up!
1: Viruses
2: I've modded for years and didn't earn a single cent from it. As did many other people who I feel probably deserved it. Why should people be getting money for this all of a sudden? Also, a lot of the people making mods don't deserve it (I give a very generous "But maybe these fellows" when it comes to stuff like Redpower, though). Heck, I can download complete total conversions for other games, and not have to go through a redirect. What makes Minecraft so much more special?

The Emperor's Rage echoes through the hills. The Emperor's Strength grips this land with fists of iron. The Emperor's Courage burns everlasting. The Endless Army will crush the Emperor's foes.
I think that modders should be allowed to use links like adf.ly, so long as it is guarunteed safe to use and they don't use chains of it. I'm okay with a bit.ly link to mcmodcenter, then an adf.ly link to download the mod, but I think one adf.ly link is enough. Yes, I think modders should get money from the people who want to use their mods, but they're hurting themselves by ensuring that some people won't use their links the next update.
Minecraft isn't so much more special, except that it's more community run than most other games. A lot of the stuff that's in vanilla MineCraft now came from mods that the community made, and then they sold it(I think. I'm not entirely sure) to Mojang. The modders choose to use adf.ly links because it makes them money and they're not going to get sued so long as they don't do something that distributes a whole MineCraft.jar or some other file that Mojang really doesn't want distributed, except by them.
If it weren't for modders, Minecraft wouldn't be where it is today. The same can't be said for games like Bioshock or Oblivion. I think that a little incentive to keep them modding is a good thing, so long as, again, it's safe for users and doesn't take a long time to get through.

Shhh... I'm hiding from the
Ssssssssss
Awww, come on!
They've just now started implementing "blocks" on Adblock and such. :\
I don't mind waiting, I mind the possibility of getting a virus.
This is the primary reason to be anti-adfly, and against all modders that use it. Thankfully adfly mostly still seems to be failing against blocking/skipping utilities here, though the second it does, to be completely honest, I'd turn to rehosting other mods off actually safe sites. If the modders take issue with it, it's their own fault for being so greedy they send their normal downloaders off to a virus mill.

Java is bulky, slow, hogs resources, passes out from exhaustion, and although it was big in the 90's is now typically only found on poorly designed websites. Much like Harry Knowles. So any time Minecraft crashes, blame Java.
But it is not ok for me that adf.ly then loads farly often websites that are full of virusses and trojans. That in fact should be definitly a no go!
For example: Even with an installed and actual virusscanner I had to spend an hour or so today to manually remove a virus / trojan from my PC. And that was not the first time...
Please keep in mind that this even bugs someone like me who has good IT skills. For simple users that is just horrible!
Therefore I suggest to either use only banners or to find another solution to gain some money for your cool mods out there.
Keep in mind, please, that not only I but also many others might appreciate that.
Thank you in advance!
I hate the deceptive advertising that is frequently found on adf.ly, and if there was any sort of reasonable alternative, I would be estatic to use it. Banners simply don't work in most situations (like here on the official forums) because all of the advertising revenue instead goes to Curse and not the developer.
By any alternative I really mean anything at all other than simply giving the software away. I admit that the amount of money I have earned from adfly is miniscule (about a couple of pizzas for myself and my kids), but it is something. A donation button doesn't work either.
I would love to have something like the iPod app store where you could purchase mods for a modest fee (say about 25 cents or so per mod up to about 2-3 bucks for really awesome mods) and be able to directly benefit the mod developer. I would even be fine if Mojang took a 10%-20% cut of the money collected in that fashion, and even some control over what gets put up there. There certainly could be some creative alternatives, but sadly there aren't any at the moment which really work.
It was invented by somebody very much outside of the Minecraft mod developer community. Simply put, a bloody brilliant idea that may perhaps be poorly executed but at least does something useful.
I wish I had invented it.
There was a similar service that was put together that was more oriented toward Minecraft users called adcraft, but unfortunately the guys running that website basically started to lose money so horribly that they pulled the plug and stopped the service as what little money they were earning from the advertisers (the guys running the site itself, not just those who put in links to redirect) was better to simply stop serving content. You would think that you could make some money from the idea, but trying to have clean virus-free ads seems to be more work than you can earn.
If you know of somebody else with a similar service, I am serious that I would like to switch or even find any other sort of alternative even for just pizza money.
I don't mind the whole adfly concept, it's not untrue that modding requires a lot of work and deserves compensation. When given the choice between adfly and a direct link (such as what Risugami does) I always do adfly.
THAT SAID, modders who use adfly to send you to another site which makes you adfly again are scum (and violating adfly's ToS).
People who separate their mod into multiple parts to make you adfly each one aren't much better.
Even if you're that poor that you need the extra instant ramen from Wal-mart, you should try to have a little dignity.
Also, Rotten, stop being so super buttmad in this thread.
If ad.fly goes then every good mod would go with it and only the ones that takes less then 30 minutes to make would stay. Then minecraft would die, then the world would die by an unrelated event.
If you do that, people will complain on your mod threads and you will be considered scum. I really don't see that being a problem with any of the major mods that are worth downloading. Those who add links of such nature likely have other problems that need to be reported to forum moderators (such as impersonating the real creator of a mod or otherwise engaging in scams or other bad behavior) that I don't see double links being something that needs to be explicitly addressed.
They've just now started implementing "blocks" on Adblock and such. :\
I don't mind waiting, I mind the possibility of getting a virus.
I found you can defeat this on Firefox with Adblock Plus by repeatedly clicking the Back button until the Mediafire download (or whatever link is behind the adf.ly one).
I refuse to remove ad blocking software or disable my hosts file to use adf.ly, especially since doing so means you might be infected by a malicious ad on there.
I would like to know how all of this effects say donations for running a server that is using mods made by others?mind you I know this is directly related to adf.ly, but it also covers making money off of some one elses work. which I am interested in knowing about, as I have a possibillity to set up a server in a while that would host like 1000 people to 1500 people at once, but with out making money to cover costs, that will never happen.

never take unfair treatment, if someone is treating you badly, and you can not resolve it, leave, you are better off with out someone in your life that abuses you no matter how they try to invalidate your concerns or feelings. No one has that right, only you get to chose how you feel about something.
Most problem I ever had with adfly is that you can go to it as a download link; you get your download but you get some other thing with it. Last thing i got from it *luckly cancled from google chrome's thing* was a fake download of a adobe program. I didn't even click any thing and this is on a large computer not a netbook/laptop (netbooks/laptops will "click" if the mouse is over a link/button for a while).
Yeah, but that <insert expletive here> is a really special case.
I don't know what about her pisses me off more:
1) The fact she split her mod into 7 parts for better monetization (it's defended so that you can pick what to play, but the mod pretty much requires all it parts to work right. Try building anything with out "world" installed).
or
2) Her shitty attitude toward her user base. I mean, it's been mentioned and suggested hundreds of times to remove or at lease give the user the ability to config out the volcanoes. Her response was pretty much "**** you, I like em, deal with it".
So, to the user that thinks the app store route would be better, here's your proof why it wouldn't.
All of a sudden, modders would have to *gasp* PROVIDE CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Like I've said before, a big problem right now is that a lot of Minecraft modders are entitled little pricks. Sure, some of them would probably stop working on their mods if they didn't get adfly money, but y'know what? Good riddance. They make the rest of the community look bad.

Entitled? You don't need to use their mods, download them, or even read the threads about the mods.
If you've never created a mod and tried to maintain that mod over a major update, you really aren't even remotely qualified to speak about people being little pricks. If anything, I see this as a bunch of whiny brats that think the world owes them a favor for them simply being alive.
With all of the incessant cries by idiots demanding that mod developers instantly update their mod immediately after an update, expecting help with boneheaded problems that could be solved just by reading the original post, or trying to get a mod developer to solve their mod conflicts with other mods, it is a wonder some mod developers even bother trying. More than a few mod developers are so tired of the situation that they have effectively abandoned their mod and certainly have stopped providing support for their mod...because it isn't worth the effort.
The amount of money most mod developers get from adfly is so little that at best it is pizza money. In other words, enough to buy a couple pizzas and perhaps a bottle of soda. To the best of my knowledge, there aren't any professional mod developers making things for Minecraft where links to their mods is generating enough revenue to let them quit their day jobs.
It is comments like this one that makes the community look bad.
