The thing is that this mod is Flowerchild's creation, he has freedom to design it as he pleases. If someone is offended or doesn't like the direction or features then that person has the freedom to choose another mod. No one is twisting your arm here. It's good to see a developer that doesn't cave to public whining and crying. Kudos to Flowerchild.
Just want to make one last point on this. I've already wasted enough time on it, and it has likely delayed the next release by a sufficient amount already.
Certain things need to be decided to make the game playable (recipes, mob damage, etc) and for it to be fair in multiplayer (speed, jump height, etc). The game does not tell you how it should be played though. Do you want to build? Are you going to focus on fighting mobs? Are you going to impose certain restrictions on yourself to add difficulty? Mojang never says "you must kill these things" or "build a giant monument".
Please tell me where any of the above differ from either the inclusion of beds in the game or their removal.
I am no more forcing players to play a certain way than any of the above are. Yes...you can't fly. I'm a total fascist for that one. Yes...certain resources can only be obtained through certain means. Damn me and all that time I spent studying the history of Stalinist Russia. No...you can't skip the night because it provides a unique play environment with its own unique challenges that I want to explore further within the mod. AAAAAAHHHHH! END OF THE WORLD!
Seriously man, I don't get it. You are free to do as you please within the game *as limited by the rules of the world in which you are playing*. Those rules are what largely define the "game" aspect of MC, that separate it from just being a toy. Without in-game constraints, all play is utterly meaningless. It becomes a game of cops and robbers in which one kid is screaming "I shot you!" and the other is screaming "no you didn't!"
Player vs Environment has always been a part of survival mode. Night-time play is a huge aspect of that, and I've corrected what I can only assume was its inadvertent removal during a period of heavy drinking.
If you don't like player vs environment play, and want complete freedom at all times, why on earth are you playing survival instead of creative? If you're not a fan of constraints defining what you can and can't do within the context of a game, it's sitting there waiting for you to go nuts.
The only difference I can see between me removing beds, and any other feature that I've built into the game is that you were habituated to the convenience of them and now feel put out by their loss. This isn't about what is more fun or not, it's about what you are used to.
I don't think there was anything super game changing (buoy and bed aside) so you just update like you normally would. (I.E. download the 4.20 files and do the drag n drop with the jar folder)
With the 4.16 still installed? And if not how would i go about uninstalling it? Because i beieve i tried just copying over the 4.20 but it didnt work for some reason...should i mc patch it or something?(ima noob :/) And thnx for actually responding to my 1st post man :).
-Make sure your /mods folder is completely empty.
-Delete your bin folder and redownload the game to make sure you have a clean install of MC.
-Post a copy of Modloader.txt here so that we have some idea of what is going wrong. What you have described doesn't provide us with any useful information to help diagnose the problem.
Unless I specifically state otherwise in the release notes (which I haven't for a very long time), you can always just install new versions of BTW over the old ones.
Also, there's basically NEVER a reason to start a new world when upgrading BTW. I've been playing on the same world now for close to two years, even before I started working on the mod and was just playing vanilla.
oh ok ill try it again. After copying over with 4.20 do i mc patch it or something? Thnx for responding btw.:P
1. Download latest version
2. Delete .bin and .mods folders from your .minecraft folder
3. Run Minecraft (NB: Do not enter any worlds, as it WILL delete any mod items/blocks in the world)
4. Exit Minecraft and install Modloader and Better Than Wolves (up-to-date versions recommended)
5. Profit

Jane McGonigal (big ARG designer) defines a game as a "voluntarily restricting your actions for fun." as an aspiring game designer myself, that definition has always stuck with me. Without limits, it isn't a game.
Heh, looks like Hardcore Bedding is going to beat placenta in the number of offended people.
Sometimes I think offending that kind of people is not the last reason why you're doing this, FlowerChild.

Hijacking is probably the least cool thing in the world.
this is an interesting discussion regarding game design, with food for thought. though forced limits are a particular challenge, what i like best about minecraft is that, as a sandbox game, it has fewer of them than your average survival game. which doesn't mean that there are no limits -- but the ones i like grappling with are usually in my own mind.
so i am just wondering why the person who feels the removal of beds is an unfair limit doesn't just play on peaceful, at least overnight? that would make up for the lack of beds, and there's no need to ditch the mod altogether. i don't care one whit for the mob aspects of minecraft; they feel hokey to me, and i just can't be bothered. what i like about BTW (from what i've seen so far; i've not played it yet) is its tech tree -- it gives more tech to minecraft in what i perceive as the game's spirit. i have great fun puzzling out what sort of things i can make, and what the recipes for them are. and then i build contraptions. all of which is more fun to me if i do not get interrupted/griefed by creepers. and so i'll just ignore flowerchild's idea of forcing me to build a railroad (sorry, *grin*, i already have many, many kms; all my bases are connected) and am grateful that his idea of a tech tree is much more in line with my own.
anyway; one man's fun is another man's boredom. what i really came here for is to ask how one registers for the BTW forum. i have instructions to share for mac server installations, but i can't post as a guest, and i can't see a registration link, nor any obvious notice that registrations are closed for some reason. re-reading the OP here seems to indicate that this might be a temporary closure due to unusually high activity? how do i get my instructions to the person asking for them?
(can i bury the placenta as fertilizer, please? *cracks up at the idea of afterbirth particles*)

FlowerChild closes the registration to the forums during stressful/busy periods, to lower the amount of spammers and, well, MCF people on his forums. You just need to wait a while and keep checking, it will be reallowed eventually.

Why do so many people believe that they have any say in the design decisions that FlowerChild is making? Quite frankly, what's wrong with you people?
...
It's not like anyone here has ever had any influence over the design decisions that Mojang is making... why do you think a mod author is going to make his version of the game yours?
Actually, that's the thing Barcode. People who complain about stuff like this (the game getting more interesting by being less convenient) have had an overwhelming inpact on the design decisions of mojang and vMC. Mojang seems to crave the input of the people who want the survival game that is least like "survival". It's for this very reason that FC gets such a backlash. Look at a not-to-different example of a game: Dwarf Fortress. In that game the creator has long term and far reaching vision. At any point he might DRASTICALLY increase the difficulty of the game and turn every player's world upside down. But there is nearly zero signficant alterations to suit some complaining entitled player, and the game is all the better for it. Everyone just waits patiently for the next great update.
That's what vMC could have been and what FC is currently making sure BTW becomes, a game created with a long-term intricate design which adds challenge and also a reason to go after those challenges. I hope this change is enough that most of the people uninterested in that style of game just stop using this mod and stop visiting this page. But I'm sure that won't happen.
Since none of us had to pay to play, there is absolutely no leverage you have in this. And even if you paid (like for vMC or pretty much any other game), you STILL don't have any say in what the game should be like. You can voice your opinion, but the way clarinetist in particular keeps coming back with the placenta particles, all you do is annoy FC and the rest of us who aren't offended by a few pixels. No one forces you to play this mod. You think the particles are a poor decision? Fine. Stop playing it if they bother you that much. Just like you have to stop watching any movie rated PG-13 nowadays, you'll see way more blood, guts and violence there... nipples get censored though, that's just too much to take for any child that has never before seen those weird natural occurances. Any FPS has more traumatic effects on children than the bloody pixels you're complaining about... unless, of course, you order the German version.
Not everyone is American, you know. In plenty of countries you'll see people naked on film, uncensored.
Although I suppose copulation animations... are they going "too far?"

FlowerChild, I was hoping I could point something out without sounding self entitled. I know you have a vision for the mod and that much is clear when I play it, especially considering your drive to make the game more of a challenge. However, to this end, one thing has stood out as a little "cheatish" when I do play. The filtering of gravel. While it is logical and everything, I find it a little odd that I can so easily get a full stack of sand and gravel from simply throwing a full stack of gravel onto a hopper.
Gravel is so abundant especially when mining and has no other real use, so it essentially becomes a free source of flint and sand, effectively rendering the need to melt down the rotted arrows specifically (which I think is a real cool idea). It also removes the need to head to a beach/desert area to make a "sand run".
Personally I would think there would be at least some materials other than sand and flint in the gravel and would maybe consider getting a random amount of between 5-15 flint and 20-30 sand out of a full stack of flint would be a more realistic result? Perhaps even less I don't know.
Now admittedly, I haven't spent much time in the end game of this mod, so the aqcuisition of gravel might become harder as mining becomes less required? Of course I realise you have the vision too so maybe I am just overlooking something else. I just though I'd bring it to your attention on the off-chance that it's been overlooked in some way. It's literally the only thing that seems to run against the grain of your campaign against ease
Anyway once again, great work with the mod, totally loving it. Can't wait for what's to come!
The time spent getting gravel, and that fact that it usually sits in your chest and never gets used still equals out to the time spent to go get a sand run, actually probably more. You just don't notice because it's a byproduct instead of the actual reason you're mining.
Why do so many people believe that they have any say in the design decisions that FlowerChild is making? Quite frankly, what's wrong with you people?
I believe i have a rather simple, but also unsettling answer to this.
The current generation is raised by a generation who experienced hard times, and does not want their kids to experience the same. In essence, individualism and a careless life are valued above everything else, and enjoying the here and now is valued above the joy you have in your other 60 or so years of your life.
People expect to be catered to, because loads of companies are doing just that to get new subscribers/people/souls. Facebook does it with it's like system, twitter is exploited for it's follow system. "like and get X free" "follow us to get exclusive X".
That group of people expects the same from this mod. And unfortunately, common sense, thinking and life experience are the only cure for that. I used to do quite a bit of the stuff i now condemn, and only through actually listening and learning did i realize what it takes to make a mod.
I used to use TMI, i used to criticize FC for a feature ( i felt Bloodwood was too easy to get), and i was horribly wrong for it. It took some willpower to not install TMI again and play fully legit, but i did it and reaped every bit of fun as a reward. But it looks like many others are simply not willing or able to use their willpower to turn off TMI.
There are a few borderline cases which i think falls in the "Apple" category, AKA "stuff you don't really need, but once you have it it's kinda useful."
Last night, people wanted to skip the night with beds because of.... rainfall. Now, i can kinda agree with those kind of people because i absolutely hate minecraft weather. Whoever thought it would be fun to have 3 minecraft days straight of depressing downpour, definitely was wrong.
I hate MC weather because it's a game of extremes: either it's summery bright, or it's a monsoon, or it's a blizzard. Never will we experience the calming beauty(or horrible spirit-crush) of a light drizzle, or a short outburst of rain, or some watery snow.
It's always just *BOOM* ton of rain, or *BOOM* ton of snow.
I do know that MC uses a texture file for snow, and i would really really love it if there would be far less extreme forms. (and preferably: have Mojang realize it's crap to have 3 days straight of rain).
The time spent getting gravel, and that fact that it usually sits in your chest and never gets used still equals out to the time spent to go get a sand run, actually probably more. You just don't notice because it's a byproduct instead of the actual reason you're mining.
All the HCB discussion--
Pearls before swine.
Exactly. It's a byproduct instead of an actual resource, I gather it by accident. My main problem is that it completely removes my need to gather two seperate resources, not to mention that it negates the need to melt down arrows/rotted arrows etc

Weird. Where did you install it? In the jar, in coremods, or in mods? Because you're supposed to install it in the jar, without Forge.
Is this mod ever going to be compatible with other mods because I really want to use this mod with mods like IC2.
Bloody hell. Read the OP.
Flowerchild has no plans whatsoever to make this mod compatible with Minecraft Forge. If you have a problem with that, don't try to convince Flowerchild otherwise, I've seen hundreds try and fail.
Better than wolve is compatible with mods. Just not with mods that need an API, except Risugamis ModLoader. Oh, and mostly with Mods that need no API, and just edit base.classes. And Some of them who need an API and edit base classes.
I can personally confirm that BTW's compatible with Audiomod. Other APIs I haven't seen any compatibility with.
why is the media fire download folder private currently? i really wanted this mod ive never gotten my own mod before
It's private? That's new.
