what it shows is that at some point your mod will be forgotten while other user/mod friendly mods or mod packs will keep getting more and more popular and used.
i really can't understand your point, making a mod compatible with other mods or post-able on more sites(as you call it copyrighting) is a great way of advertisement like youtube showcase so by making you'r mod incompatible you actually only hurting yourself and your mod.
true there are some who will try to post the mod as they're own but there's a simple fix like some hidden (flowerchild created this mod)codding in the objects,
so again you are only hurting your self and limiting your mod from being really great!
i hope you will reconsider.
Yeah people posting the mod as their own work will do it regardless, he obviously isn't saying "no" to prevent people claiming it is his work. He's doing it so that people will have a central location to go to get the most up to date version and effective support. That simply doesn't happen with the technic pack as it stands or any similar mod pack. Also, if he willingly allows others to distribute his mod then he removes his potential future ability to profit with something like adfly. That is a huge amount to give up, when all it will gain is that players have to click a little bit less to access his mod. If they want to play it, it's remarkably easy to play with, even with many other mods. Yeah some players are leaving because of forge support. Not everyone can both be "hilariously egotistical" and yet not care all that much if he loses some players if it means he gets to continue enjoying his hobby. People treat mod makers like businessmen, and they really aren't, they're just people who want to change minecraft into a better experience, for themselves and hopefully other people. Some do it well (Albaka, Elo, Spacetoad, FC), some not as much. The people who care a lot about how people feel about their mods tend to be part of the latter group.
Regarding his technical points, if you remove BTW from a world that has it it'll open (I did it recently) but all the BTW stuff will be blank. That's basically how every mod works. I'm not sure why that is even worth mentioning.
Of course it uses a lot of sprites, it's a huge mod. It uses plenty of block IDs but if there were ways to compress them into fewer it would be done. I'm curious how someone who called it poorly coded would choose to compress it down to fewer. Unless you're suggesting tile entities, which is the epitome of "poorly coded shortcut".
Also, BTW can be used with a huge number of mods still. Saying it's BTW or nothing is just inaccurate, and I'm shocked that someone who compiles other peoples work on a daily basis is unable to edit a config file. Sure, it doesn't work with everything (few mods that do anything actually do), but it's definitely not "BTW or everything else".

first of all the very first post as it says on the first line if you read it is someones opinion on technic faq.
second the adfly problem is as easy to fix as to just post that people who want to post the mod should use the adfly link as the download link, also its not less clicking for users its more users click and find out about this mod.
third if you ever check the technic site it says exactly which mods are used giving credit to the mode makers and posting they're site links to check for newer versions or just to say thank you.
and fourth if a mod is incompatible with other mods it becomes a question of what mods do i want to sacrifice for the sake of playing that ONE mod, and with the increasing popularity of other mods the (pros and cons) list is getting extremely negative for btw and at some point people will just say "f@ck it i don't want to sacrifice all of these epic mods for just 1 mod", and that will be the falling point for btw.

There isn't an adfly link now, it was an example. The point is control, if you give permission it's a lot more difficult to retract it later. It also ignores the whole "centralized support" aspect, which is really the main issue. But it doesn't really matter. If you don't want to use the mod, don't. People don't make great mods to get huge numbers of downloads, they make great mods because they want to make the game interesting for themselves, and they just happen to share it. I don't understand why people think they're so important that their decision to download the outcome of someone's hobby should matter as to how that hobby is directed. BTW is probably one of the most well known mods for minecraft, and it was even before it became forge compatible. It's also rapidly developed and expanded in interesting ways. It will stop when it stops being interesting for FC, which doesn't seem to be related to the wild swings in popularity among people who make demands of him.

well that was my opinion and this is yours...
all in all i am getting weary of explaining this and mostly i really don't care anymore so choose what you want to choose.
the only big point is by making the mod more user/mods friendly it will get larger support which is always a very good thing and as good as a mod this is more people will want to help with the code to make it more compatible and fit with other mods.
in addition if the creator happens to share the mod and happens to make threads of the mod and happens to communicate with other people about the mod\pros\cons\new ideas.
it just happens to be more than just something to make for yourself.
if fc didn't care about other peoples opinion evaluating his work he would have never created a thread let alone discuss about his mod, just the fact that he keeps updating shows that he cares about his mod being considered good and popular ether consciously or sub consciously.
I'm just trying to give my opinion on what is the best way to make this mod flourish and keep it publicly alive.
also the most core point about a mod is to make the game experience more interesting and adding a wider range of options but by making a mod-incompatible mod the creator seals the wider range of options and thus limiting the options to the game to only the options the mod provides and as a result it goes against what it means to be a mod which never ends good no matter how good the start is.
and yes i want to use this mod but it bugs me a lot that it isn't compatible with other mods that i like,
which ruins my minecraft experience and which is why i am posting all of this!!!
and also the fact that I'm not in the minority but in the majority of people which doesn't look good for the future of this mod
the only big point is by making the mod more user/mods friendly it will get larger support which is always a very good thing and as good as a mod this is more people will want to help with the code to make it more compatible and fit with other mods.
Flowerchild is the only coder. this won't change
it just happens to be more than just something to make for yourself.
no. he actually mostly makes it for himself and lets other people share the fun.

a suggestion has to be exceptional in order to be considered. plus, there's a very big chance that a suggestion is already under development.
I'm just trying to give my opinion on what is the best way to make this mod flourish and keep it publicly alive.
based upon the MC forum and BTW forum populations/opinions, this mod is mostly loved by the "hardcore" fans and least loved by the passerby. in fact, the vast majority of people on this forum post crap like "i get blackscreen please help", "What have wolves done to you?", "i won't play because of the name", and more useless filler.
although this mod seems to attract most of such people, there are many other mods with similar stupid comments, useless suggestions, useless opinions, and useless requests for useless.. uhm for help.
i think it might actually be good to have an IQ test before download, including such questions as:
Q: where do you install this mod
A: In my Mods folder
B: In my Minecraft.Jar
C: on my desktop
D: dunno, please help!
Q: what do i do with the META-INF in my Minecraft.Jar
A: Delete it?
B: Keep it
C: Backup
D: what's the META-INF
E: What's the META-INF, Modloader told me to delete it.
Q: why is this mod named Better than Wolves
A: because the author is an ass
B: Because this mod improves wolves
C: because this mod adds worthless features
D: because this Mod was initially meant to add useful features that notch could have coded in the same time he needed for wolves
E: because he needed a fancy name
Q: Does this mod need forge?
A: yes
B: no
C: no but the sourcefiles need to be published by the Author due to an agreement
D: uhm? maybe?
Q: why is this mod best played alone?
A: Because the author is a self-centered maniac
B: because this mod extrapolates Vanilla minecraft and tries to retain that vanilla feel
C: because this mod is incompatible with everything
D: because i don't know how to install any other mods.
a few cases have multiple good answers (but some are better)
what really impresses me is that it has so many stuff but that's the thing its to complicated to understand everything
Don't worry about that too much, I was in the same boat not too long ago. If you need help, the original post gives a description of the tech tree in order. If you cant figure something out, battosay has YouTube videos that explain pretty much everything. Keep at it, you'll enjoy it.
Haha, that's quite true. But everyone should know that practicing (here : installing mods) makes it way easier. Therefor people shouldn't be discouraged from learning those things... (even though it isn't very difficult after learning the basics !)
yup. it was also kind of intended as a way to make people familiar with this. once they can fill in the questionnaire, they can install mods properly and save many modmakers from useless and annoying questions.
the most useless has GOT to be "i have a black screen please help".
like we are telepathic and instantly know what's wrong. a black screen can be caused by ANYTHING.
besides, every mod has pretty much identical installation instructions, and if you can't install modloader, you can't install this
I won't get into the details of this overnight debate, but do want to make one point:
One interesting thing to note is that the popularity of the mod hasn't suffered at all since I switched away from the Forge. I was actually expecting it to drop significantly, and accepted that, but the download rate has actually increased as of late.
So yeah, guess I was wrong. I think it's just a very vocal minority that cares about using 10 mods at once.
In other words, just because your group likes to ***** a lot, it doesn't mean you represent the majority of Minecraft players.
Popularity really isn't my priority, as I've stated many times in the past, but I did find the above observation rather interesting as it ran counter to what I had anticipated.

With regards to the overall debate, I will say this: I find it interesting that you introduced yourself to the thread with a message that basically calls the mod a piece of crap, and me a no-skill loser, but you end your posting here by stating that you want to use the mod.

as for the iq test i think
1=B
2=none of the above (keep a clean backup of minecraft, and delete META-INF)
3=D personally from my point of view as of someone who doesn't know much about the history of the mod it looks like it initially started as a wolves mod but at some point fc just started adding other features and the name stands for something like better than some random wolves mod... (just my opinion)
4=C
5=i want to go with B but it contradicts with itself mostly because when a mod is created its because something about the vanilla feels wrong and you want to change that for something better. so i guess its somewhere between B and C
I seriously don't think this mod is going to suddenly disappear. It has a rather healthy core fan base. The compatibility issues might make some unhappy, but the majority are here to stay I'd wager. Better Than Wolves is the only mod of its kind.
I'd like to think you really had Flowerchild's and the mod's best interests in mind mc83os, but I wasn't born yesterday. You raise interesting points, but you also fail to grasp any that Flowerchild has made in the past.
This mod is here because Flowerchild enjoys working on it. He is not here to entertain us or anyone else. I'm sure if 10 people used the mod and Flowerchild still enjoyed working on it, he would continue on.
I do think it would be nice if Flowerchild worked at keeping things compatible, but I also know if he did that the mod would grind to a halt in terms if new features. We all just need to hold out until the API is released and all of these issues vanish.
Keep at it FC... You know it is worth having if some ******* tries to steal it.
i guess i missed the api part but its still a pain to wait for it and its not exactly some sort of magic spell that will fix everything, unless it really is that good...
With regards to the overall debate, I will say this: I find it interesting that you introduced yourself to the thread with a message that basically calls the mod a piece of crap, and me a no-skill loser, but you end your posting here by stating that you want to use the mod.
Self-contradict much?
that was mostly because i was angry at that point remembering that btw is incompatible with other mods so i threw a long-shot hoping to see if it will change your mind...
guess i was wrong but hey i was angry and it was worth a try
AND AGAIN THAT WAS A COPY-PASTE OPINION FROM TECHNIC FAQ
and also the fact that I'm not in the minority but in the majority of people which doesn't look good for the future of this mod
I feel like you have a problem differentiating facts and opinions. Since you don't have evidence for your last statement, and the only possible evidence (download stats) affirms that you are wrong, this isn't a "fact" this is a "guess" or an opinion.
The mods direction isn't going to change. If you want this mod to be successful, help to advertise it and share it with others. If you don't, then feel free to ignore it. Prophesying doom literally accomplishes nothing in either direction and only serves to make this thread less useful and annoys basically everyone. You're possibly the 1000th person to predict doom and destruction, and it seems like you'll be the 1000th one wrong. Just don't bother, let it go.
I don't get how people get so angry about a free mod for a game? What right do you have to get angry? You were probably one of those kids who flipped out when a float in the parade didn't throw you free candy even though you had a bucket full already.
I feel like you have a problem differentiating facts and opinions. Since you don't have evidence for your last statement, and the only possible evidence (download stats) affirms that you are wrong, this isn't a "fact" this is a "guess" or an opinion.

I'm nether bothering nor prophesying doom(where did you take that?)
i didn't say its going to be destroyed i said it looks bad, also for the fact problem take a mathematical look
"BTW" supporters VS "All the other mods out there" Supporters + "mods that will be out in the future" supporters
if that isn't proof enough for you to understand than i don't know what is...
as for the angry part its anger from frustration searching for ideas to bypass the incompatibility issue,
Good mod. Also, a possibly hilarious parody idea regrading the enderdragon: When you destroy the egg, you get a dragon soul, which allows you to blow back mobs a (Very) long distance away. Useful for telling that creeper that you made that wolf dung collection pit and are NOT letting him blow it up. Also, skyrim.
I have a problem because it wont finnish loading when i log in from the launcher. I just installed tomanyitems after i downloaded this mod. is it because it takes long to load with all the stuff in this mod? or is it not compatible with tomanyitems?

5=i want to go with B but it contradicts with itself mostly because when a mod is created its because something about the vanilla feels wrong and you want to change that for something better. so i guess its somewhere between B and C
i guess i missed the api part but its still a pain to wait for it and its not exactly some sort of magic spell that will fix everything, unless it really is that good...
that was mostly because i was angry at that point remembering that btw is incompatible with other mods so i threw a long-shot hoping to see if it will change your mind...
guess i was wrong but hey i was angry and it was worth a try
AND AGAIN THAT WAS A COPY-PASTE OPINION FROM TECHNIC FAQ
I'm nether bothering nor prophesying doom(where did you take that?)
i didn't say its going to be destroyed i said it looks bad, also for the fact problem take a mathematical look
"BTW" supporters VS "All the other mods out there" Supporters + "mods that will be out in the future" supporters
if that isn't proof enough for you to understand than i don't know what is...
as for the angry part its anger from frustration searching for ideas to bypass the incompatibility issue,
PS. i don't even have a bucket to fill with candy
Where are your statistics to prove this statement? I would truly love to see them.
Also saying that "since it doesn't work with all mods, that anyone who wants to use more mods it part of the majority statistic" isn't going to fly.
