my issue is outside of the nether specifically, i get a constant lag spike even tho my computer is running 200-300 FPS (i only ran maxfps for testing) all green lagometer then big red spike
That's the "lag spike of death" so to speak. Optifine corrects that. If you still get it with Optifine then I don't know what to tell you.

well i have heard of the LSoD but i ahvent had it till recently, its very annoying, say ur walking foward then u go to hit a lever but u skip forward and miss the damn lever etc
Still 99% for 1.2.4 and 1.2.5 is right around the corner. I see it says it seems to work with the snapshot, hope it stays that way :/ I know they're doing it as fast as they can but you either have to sacrifice updates/fixes or better performance.
Anyways, love Optifine! Hate using Minecraft without it.
To everyone who is saying that 1.2.5 is coming: 1.2.5 is already out. The "snapshot prerelease" is the full 1.2.5. It was done this way so that modders can be ready when the official launcher tells you that there's an update available.
There is no indication in the OP or last 3 pages that 1.2.4 is being skipped. It says:
"Update to 1.2.4 is in progress: 99% (release candidate, seems to work fine with Minecraft 1.2.5).".
That doesn't mean "working out bugs". Release candidate means spx thinks's it all good and ready. And yes, there's a bunch of versions to update.
I only saw one issue reported so far in this thread about the current version failing with 1.2.5: apparently shift-clicking furnaces doesn't work. So it does look like there's a really good chance that this mod will be ready for 1.2.5 on ... is it wednesday night? ... the official "everyone updates" day.
So it's probably the case that the current version (release candidate) may be the only 1.2.4 version, and a full set will come out for 1.2.5. Not a problem.
I don't update minecraft anymore unless/until OF is ready. I'm glad that this new release approach means I won't spend 2 weeks not playing multiplayer or wanting a new feature while the update happens.
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
Getting 6 errors when starting the 1.2.4 HD_A preview with the magic launcher, which doesn't let me startup the game, resulting in a white screen after logging in.
That's what the log spits out for me :
Anyone got some advice ?
Optifine is not compatible with MCPatcher.
Start with a clean minecraft.jar and everything will be fine.

Use an unmodified minecraft.jar.
EDIT: MCPatcher and Optifine do work together. I've done it.

Magic Launcher needs a clean (unmodified) minecraft.jar file to work with. Your minecraft.jar file has been modified.
There is a problem with the Early Access Release 4 of Java 7 (Java 1.7). Uninstall it and go back to "Update 3" instead. I personally suggest you also have the latest Java 6 (Java 1.6) installed in addition.
Depending on what all errors/issues you are having, you might need to adjust the amount of memory being allocated from 256MB to something like 512MB. For instance, some 512x512 pixel texture packs may require you to allocate slightly more memory. But, only change this if you still have problems after doing the above.
EDIT: MCPatcher and Optifine do work together. I've done it.
To be clear, he's also trying to use Magic Launcher. While MCPatcher and OptiFine can work together (if done right), Magic Launcher will NOT work with a modified minecraft.jar file which is what MCPatcher does (it modifies the minecraft.jar file). So, you can actually sort of say MCPatcher and Magic Launcher are not compatible.

Wen I said "Optifine and MCPatcher are not compatible", I meant the mods included in MCPatcher which are also included in Optifine.
About "Magic Launcher will NOT work with a modified minecraft.jar file", it's not true. I tried to launch (with Magic Launcher) a minecraft 1.2.3 patched with MCPatcher, and it worked fine.
So, we finally can say :
- MCPatcher and OptiFine can work together (if done right).

Hi, my game crashed when I installed Preview OptiFine HD A2 for Minecraft 1.2.4 and my game didn't load. I saw only black screen. I deleted the META-INF folder.
My Specs:
CPU: AMD Turion II Dual-Core Mobile M520 @ 2.3 Ghz
GPU: ATi Radeon Mobility HD 4200
RAM: 4GB DDR2 800Mhz
So it's probably the case that the current version (release candidate) may be the only 1.2.4 version, and a full set will come out for 1.2.5. Not a problem..
Umm thats a problem for me cause i am a admin on a 1.2.4 server and without the smooth version i cant play very well
in the pre 1.2.4 post section you typoed render as "rander" in the link to the picture.
just thought i'd point that out.
this is one of the mods i cant play minecraft without, it actually lets me use larger then tiny render distance and fancy graphics instead of fast without lagging, where as without this my game runs like crap even with fast and tiny.

i got a texture pack now, its here it changes how armor and tools look and has a few slight changes to a few blocks in terrain like making the redstone torch look more like a redstone torch then a lollipop.
I'm afraid you're just going to have to set your settings low and knuckle down for a little while. After 1.2.5 is released it shouldn't take as long for mods to update due to the way they're doing it with the release candidate.
Considering the developer of Optifine also develops a launcher which allows you to select different .jars (and thus, older versions of Minecraft) it makes far more sense to complete the 1.4.4 version while working on 1.2.5.
This works amazingly ^^ Without it Minecraft runs on like 6 fps XD Bumped to 25 and occasionally 30 with this. Now this oversized calculator can actually run Minecraft without dying
I used Optifine A2 to help make my Netbook run with only 1.6 Gighz processors and 1 Gig RAM.

I have a question/observation about the "Lag Spike of Death" (LSD).
Back story:
My wife's laptop is our primary way of playing MInecraft. My desktop on the other hand could barely play Minecraft. I always assumed it was because it only had 1Gb of memory. I have since upgraded and added 4Gb of memory and while the computer runs better and Minecraft to an extent runs better, I still have the same problem with Minecraft.
Desktop Specs:
OS: MS Windows XP Home 32-bit SP3
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 541 Prescott 90nm Technology
RAM: 5.0GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 400MHz (5-5-5-31) (yes I know I can't use all 5GB)
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5N-E SLI (Socket 775)
Graphics: 256MB GeForce 7600 GT (BFG Tech)
Laptop Specs:
OS: MS Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2
CPU: AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-64 46 °C Tyler 65nm Technology
RAM: 3.0GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 313MHz (5-5-5-15)
Motherboard: TOSHIBA IALAA (Socket M2/S1G1)
Graphics: 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 (Toshiba)
Problem:
When I play MC on my desktop I get the "Lag Spike of Death"...sometimes. Sometimes I don't get it at all, sometimes I can't go more than a half a second without it happening. And it turns out I only get the "Lag Spike of Death" when I hang out in one small area for long periods of time.
My Diagnosis:
I went through many theories trying to figure out what was causing the LSD. From using the wrong Optifine to Windows XP not being compatible with MC and even the fact that I have a single core processor. I tested every version of Optifine while building my tree farm, and tallying every time I had an LSD. Turns out sp614x is right Smooth and Multi-core do reduce the number of LSDs that occur. I scoured the internet looking for some form of confirmation that Windows XP home and/or my processor has some sort of bug that made it incompatible with MC. The results were inconclusive.
I recently noticed I had a lot of LSDs when I was building my house, often to the point of being unplayable. Far more than when I was building my tree farm. I thought maybe it was my bed or that I have more tile entities in my house than by my tree farm. I think my tree farm is just big enough that while I was building it I wasn't in the "same place" for very long. Whereas my house was small enough that I was in the "same place" most of the time.
This...all of this...is just....wonky!

So I'm having some problem with the A2 version. I'm trying to use Sonic Ether's Shaders.. which does work
But it does not work in combination with Optifine. Only one can be running at a time (Either the shaders, or Optifine), or neither will work...
Any suggestions?
