Thanks, I appreciate the input. I am okay with taking a load off of the system, especially for my daughter who usually runs 50K browser tabs and Roblox and everything else under the sun with MC out of pure spite that she is a multi-tasking phenom like her mother. My son... he's more like me, a few tabs that matter, why run two games if you can only play one at a time, and who the heck needs that many tabs in a browser? He's awesome. He's his daddy's son.
The download link on the first page of this post points to a jar file, OptiFine_1.13.2_HD_U_E4.jar. Since my experience with Java is strictly with MC launching, I am unsure what I need to do to install it and not use a launcher like Magic Launcher. Or would you recommend the launcher? I am a n00b here, not sure which approach to take. Testing the waters.
I will do all of this first, get a hang for it, then hook the kids up. I don't want them messing with this stuff. Their safety is paramount.

Sorry if this post appears lengthy at first; I'm just being thorough.
If you have Java installed, you should be able to simply launch the .jar file through Java by double-clicking the .jar file. If not, try to right-click it, then choose "Open with" > "Java(TM) Platform SE Binary".
You should then see a little "OptiFine Installer" window pop up. In this, all you have to do is click "Install" (ignore the "Extract" button). Once it says "OptiFine is successfully installed", simply click "OK", and the installer should close.
Now open the Minecraft launcher (the default/official one is perfectly fine for this, and is what OptiFine installs itself into), and simply launch the game. The OptiFine game profile should already be active now. (If not, then beside the green "Play" button, there will be a "drop-up" button. Click on it, then click on the "OptiFine" profile to select it.)
Once the game launches, enter the "Options..." > "Video Settings..." menu, which has many new options now. Your children are referring to the new "Dynamic Lights" option. Click on it twice to set it to "Fancy", and then try playing a bit around in some caves with a torch in your hand.
(You may now dabble in the rest of the video settings, too. Personal favourites of mine are setting the "Details..." > "Fog" option to "Fancy" (though not all computers are affected by that), the "Quality..." > "Antialiasing" setting to 16 (be aware that this can decrease performance a lot(?)!), and the "Quality..." > "Connected Textures" option to "Fancy". But keep the "Shaders..." option at "Off" unless you're aware of exactly what it does.)
If you want to download OptiFine for a different version of Minecraft (such as version 1.14, once it releases and then once OptiFine is made for it), note that you'll have to play a non-OptiFine version of it (in order to download it) before you can install OptiFine for it.

Thorough indeed. Thank you. The right-click option was what Java 11 wanted apparently. Thank you. I truly appreciate your time and information with all of this. I'll try it on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS in a few days, too, and see what it does for the laptop. We are grateful.
Hey, I can't use latest Optifine version for MC 1.13.2 (HD U E7) because it tells me, that it isn't a valid mod file. - forge ist out and installed which means that optifine must be loaded over forge, even if forge for 1.13.2 is in beta. -
OptiFine 1.13.2 HD U E7 is not compatible with Minecraft Forge. (According to the official OptiFine changelog, the current OptiFine 1.13.2 HD U E8 preview is "internally compatible with Forge 25.0.90"... but "can't be installed yet", making that slightly irrelevant as of now.)
Is there a way that I can get the x4/x5/etc zoom options for for GUI scale in MC1.7.10 OF? I'm running FTB Infinity Evolved on a 4k monitor with OF_1.7.10_HD_U_E7 (latest) and the GUI options (S/M/L/Auto) are not ideal. Would love to get the x5 option. Is there anything I can do to manipulate/add this in myself or am I at the mercy of a coder to help?!
I want to use some random textures for zombies and use 3 permanent skins for zombies with the names "zombie1", "zombie2", "zombie2"
I wrote this:
skins.1=2-5
skins.2=6
skins.3=7
skins.4=8
name.2=zombie1
name.3=zombie2
name.4=zombie3
but it does not work, how to write it correctly? thank

I don't clearly remember where I came across this trick (possibly earlier in this thread), but you can edit options.txt and specify "guiScale:4", "guiScale:5", etc. to get the higher zoom levels. Technically, Optifine isn't even required for this setting to work, but it will show as "GUI Scale: Auto" in the menu, and changing it in the menu will revert it.
First of all, excuse-me for my misspellings, English is not my first language.
And I don't know if I'm in the right thread for my question, if not, feel free to tell me where to go to.
I'm trying to create a resource pack with customized skies only.
But I'm encountering a slight issue with the different layer of the moon_phases picture and with the stars on the sky.
In fact, my stars seems to be "on top" of the moon, so for the nights where the moon isn't fully visible, I'd like to barely show the parts which were in the shadow. I can see it, but my problem is that the stars are "adding" on top of that "kind of hidden" part of the moon, which is a bit weird.
I don't know if there is a way to avoid that behavior.
I've already played with the file of properties of the stars, and of the moon phases, especially with the "blend" option, but nothing seems to do the trick.
If anyone has a solution, I'll be glad to hear it.
Hello, I keep trying to install optifine with forge by just dropping it into the mods folder, but i keep getting an error, I will post the latest file on this thread that shows everything involving the error

You probably have the FPS-max setting on 30 in the graphic settings
to help explain this more, your graphics card drivers on your computer, you should check the settings in the drivers to see if you have the FPS locked at 30 or you have Vsync locked on, but Lumus_Prime is on the right track for you.
New user of Optifine here, and so far I've got it to work and entered my server and installed some shader packs and so on, very good.
However, I would like to run Optifine with a newer version of Java, since the bundled version with Minecraft is ancient. I'm trying to change the Java runtime in the minecraft launcher, just like you would with vanilla minecraft. I've installed Java 12, and vanilla minecraft works well when pointing the runtime exec in the launcher to that version. However, when doing the same for Optifine, it crashes as soon as the game is launched. I then tried to download the newest version of Java 8, and thought that it would of course work without problems, since Java 8 (but an old version) is the one bundled with minecraft. However, this is the same problem, crashes as soon as the game is launched with the optifine profile.
Anybody know how to make optifine run with a java version that is newer than the Java 8u51?

Hey, I can't use latest Optifine version for MC 1.13.2 (HD U E7) because it tells me, that it isn't a valid mod file.
To be direct at the beginning: No, I don't want any kind of installer, as forge ist out and installed which means that
optifine must be loaded over forge, even if forge for 1.13.2 is in beta.
Why? Because OF creates it's own instance, which is stupied and forge creates it's own instance, which is the prefered way.
And because of this stupied "Create for each installer jar one new profile" instead of "Searching for existing profile and merge it."
I don't start any kind of installer again.
I know that forge for 1.13.2 wasn't available for a long time but now it isn't and now it is time that OF is loaded like a mod like until
1.12.2 and earlier, thanks!
As long as this isn't done, OF get's kicked out.

MauveCloud0...thank you SO much. It works and is now playable in my eyes!
Is there is any way to, like, upload a custom cape texture?
Who's that behind you?
Hey, SP!
Would you make your mod compatible with FoamFix? Both of them are like a "Coca Cola in the desert" for PCs and laptops

this is going to be an odd question, but are you pointing it to the 32 bit or 64 bit java version? 64 is the one you want it to point to.
