In my opnion, optifine don't help a lot for increase fps, because if you compare the render distance 16 chunks from optifine and then the render distance 16 chunks from minecraft vanilla you can see that vanilla process more chunks than optifine, so thats the why optifine "help" something...
How come optifine won't work on 1.6.4 Forge? Every time I go on a world with it, it lags 5000x worse than it does without it. I tried creating a new world and everything. Please help me.
If anyone has a problem with chunks flickering/disappearing. If you have Chunk loading set to multi-core, turn it to default and that MIGHT fix your problem.

I'm pretty sure those two lines are the reason why you are crashing from out of memory; running 43 mods with only 512 MB of memory is asking for trouble. Heck, I need about 600-700 MB of RAM to run with only a few mods (four in Forge plus a jar mod I made), albeit one of them (the one in my signature) makes the game use 2-3x more memory than usual.
Sp614x, I would like to personally thank you for this mod. I've been waiting for 1.7.4, and it has finally come out- zero bugs were to be found. Before i got a better computer (2 years ago), this mod was a necessity; used to get ~20 FPS on a good day, with everything set to minimal, without optifine. Even now it is extremely helpful to get rid of FPS spikes; I've been running smoothly ever since I installed it.
And Racingwheel125, spoilers would save space when posting a crash report. An explanation would also be nice to post.

I'm too lazy to take a screenshot (sorry), but I'll explain it for you.
Fast fog creates a square wall of fog that rotates with you.
Fancy creates a circular shape around you instead of a flat wall.
Every time I tried to have the Lost Potato 3 texture pack on, minecraft would crash with no report at the title screen. I had to pull off my 1.7.2 optifine ultra and run the map without it. (oddly enough, no texture glitches I noticed except invisible potion effects)
It could have something to do with that texture pack being 32x, because I tried painterly earlier and it worked just fine.
The sound overlapping mutilating the music has become annoying enough I'll see if 1.7.4 fixes that.

I have experienced an issue. I was using the John Smith Legacy resource pack, and the custom font in that pack gets mangled when OptiFine HD C4 Ultra Preview is used. Switching to Minecraft's default is fine. It appears there is an issue with Optifine on 1.7.4 and certain custom fonts.
I just used the optifine 1.7.4 and saw no initial problems. Didn't think to check custom fonts, but I didn't see the supposed glass panes bug (maybe you need connected textures on to get that bug?)
I'm still getting crashes when swapping resource packs though. It doesn't seem to be just swap to 32x = crash though, because I turned on Atherys Ascended and it seemed to be working alright.
I'll test that custom font thing and see if I can duplicate it.
edit: tried to turn on that resource pack, and now, just like the lost potato one, a crash every time I open minecraft.
edit2: I return from the SCIENCE of trial and error! Any variant of John Smith will crash the game once turned on, and any time you open minecraft afterwards until optifine is disabled.
Other 32x, or 16x texture packs I had on hand did not have that problem, and only crashed rarely (1/5 chance?) when you swapped to them and pressed OK.
All of this was tested with 1.7.4 and the only optifine 1.7.4 version up, and magic launcher.

I posted images a short while back in this very thread. Basically, as another poster said, the fog line in circular rather than square around you. As a result, you see ever so slightly further directly in front of you, but ever so slightly less to the sides.
The major difference, which pictures wont show as well, is that the fog line is closer to being exactly the same distance all around you than by default, so namely, you don't get the effect of seeing things show and hide from view slightly when turning. It's much more consistent.

Try multi-core chunk loading. It's like 8 times as fast for me.

1.7.2 version: I'm not sure if AF is actually doing anything, or maybe AA. I have AA set to 16x and AF set to 8X and have restarted the game. The edges still look just as jagged. I'm using a NVIDIA GTX 650Ti Boost with the latest drivers. My cousin is also complaining about that on his 2011 iMac, which has an AMD card.
I remember the game looking way different with those same settings back in 1.5, much smoother.

I'm pretty sure those two lines are the reason why you are crashing from out of memory; running 43 mods with only 512 MB of memory is asking for trouble. Heck, I need about 600-700 MB of RAM to run with only a few mods (four in Forge plus a jar mod I made), albeit one of them (the one in my signature) makes the game use 2-3x more memory than usual.

I'm too lazy to take a screenshot (sorry), but I'll explain it for you.
Fast fog creates a square wall of fog that rotates with you.
Fancy creates a circular shape around you instead of a flat wall.
It could have something to do with that texture pack being 32x, because I tried painterly earlier and it worked just fine.
The sound overlapping mutilating the music has become annoying enough I'll see if 1.7.4 fixes that.
I have experienced an issue. I was using the John Smith Legacy resource pack, and the custom font in that pack gets mangled when OptiFine HD C4 Ultra Preview is used. Switching to Minecraft's default is fine. It appears there is an issue with Optifine on 1.7.4 and certain custom fonts.
I'm still getting crashes when swapping resource packs though. It doesn't seem to be just swap to 32x = crash though, because I turned on Atherys Ascended and it seemed to be working alright.
I'll test that custom font thing and see if I can duplicate it.
edit: tried to turn on that resource pack, and now, just like the lost potato one, a crash every time I open minecraft.
edit2: I return from the SCIENCE of trial and error! Any variant of John Smith will crash the game once turned on, and any time you open minecraft afterwards until optifine is disabled.
Other 32x, or 16x texture packs I had on hand did not have that problem, and only crashed rarely (1/5 chance?) when you swapped to them and pressed OK.
All of this was tested with 1.7.4 and the only optifine 1.7.4 version up, and magic launcher.
Another random thing I noticed was using SMP's revival (a 1.6 version overlapped with default to fill in the blanks) extra-tall grass was grey. Just an observation.
Which reminds me of an interesting point. With John Smith Legacy active, I tried turning off custom fonts in Options, but that had no effect. I've got a screenshot that shows that part of the Options, and also shows what the custom font looks like for me with Optifine on.

Extra-tall grass. You mean the two-high grass? That's working fine for me. I tested with revival.2013.07.11.zip.
Running with many mods installed needs more memory.

The major difference, which pictures wont show as well, is that the fog line is closer to being exactly the same distance all around you than by default, so namely, you don't get the effect of seeing things show and hide from view slightly when turning. It's much more consistent.
Is this a 1.7.4 bug?or OptiFine bug?
Try multi-core chunk loading. It's like 8 times as fast for me.

1.7.2 version: I'm not sure if AF is actually doing anything, or maybe AA. I have AA set to 16x and AF set to 8X and have restarted the game. The edges still look just as jagged. I'm using a NVIDIA GTX 650Ti Boost with the latest drivers. My cousin is also complaining about that on his 2011 iMac, which has an AMD card.
I remember the game looking way different with those same settings back in 1.5, much smoother.
